Chapter 23 - The Matriarch's Broadcast

There is a distinct difference between an interview and an execution. When the bright studio lights of the national broadcast network hit my face, I was not preparing to answer questions. I was preparing to deliver a verdict.

I wore an immaculate, razor-sharp crimson suit. It was the color of power, the color of a warning. I sat opposite the exact same host who had entertained Bradley's lies two nights prior. The host looked smug, expecting me to be defensive, tearful, and apologetic.

He had vastly underestimated the woman sitting across from him.

"Vivian Lawson," the host began, leaning forward with a faux-sympathetic expression. "The nation was shocked by the allegations made by your ex-husband, Bradley Morgan. He claims you manipulated his downfall, stole his family's company, and are now using your vast wealth to illegally keep him from his son. How do you respond to a man who says he just wants to be a father?"

I didn't blink. I didn't break eye contact with the camera.

"I respond with the truth," I said, my voice smooth, cold, and echoing with absolute authority. "A concept this network seems to have a very loose relationship with."

The host bristled. "Ms. Lawson, we are just asking the hard questions."

"No, you are laundering a criminal's reputation for ratings," I corrected him effortlessly. "Bradley Morgan is a convicted felon who served time for assault and massive corporate embezzlement. He did not lose his empire because of me. He lost it because he was a fraud. And he is not here because he wants to be a father. He is here because he was paid to be here."

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a thick, black folder, and dropped it heavily onto the glass studio table.

"What is this?" the host asked, looking genuinely nervous.

"That is a forensic financial audit of this very television network," I stated, staring dead into his eyes. "An audit that proves Vanguard Media, your parent company, received a twenty-million-dollar cash injection from an offshore shell account linked directly to Victoria Pierce—a woman currently serving a federal sentence for money laundering."

The host turned the color of chalk. The producers behind the cameras started frantically whispering into their headsets.

"You allowed a convicted felon to buy airtime on your network to wage a smear campaign against the CEO of a domestic abuse charity," I continued, my voice rising in power, dominating the broadcast. "You gave a platform to an abuser in exchange for dirty money."

"Ms. Lawson, you cannot make unsubstantiated claims on live television," the host stammered, trying to regain control.

"They aren't unsubstantiated," I smiled, a fierce, terrifying expression of total victory. "Because while I am sitting here, my legal team is handing copies of those exact documents to the FCC and the Department of Justice. Your network is about to be investigated for accepting illicit funds. Bradley Morgan isn't a victim. He is an accessory to federal money laundering."

I leaned forward, looking directly into the primary camera lens, speaking to the millions of people watching at home.

"To anyone watching this who believes that power belongs to the men who shout the loudest," I said, my voice a clarion call of absolute strength. "Hear this. You do not have to shrink. You do not have to be afraid of the ghosts in your past. When a monster tries to drag you back into the dark, you do not run. You turn on the blinding light of the truth, and you watch them burn."

I stood up, adjusting my crimson blazer. I didn't wait for the host to end the segment. I took the folder and walked off the set.

Liam was waiting for me in the green room. He didn't say a word. He just pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my neck, a deep, rumbling laugh of pure awe escaping his chest.

"You just destroyed a national television network in four minutes," Liam whispered, kissing my cheek.

"I balance the books, Liam," I said, pulling back to look at the man who loved me. "And their ledger was deep in the red. Let's go home."
