Chapter 5: The Daughter Of The Forgotten Maid

Adrian Ashford had faced enemies who wanted his money.

He had faced competitors who wanted his company.

He had faced men with weapons and men with smiles that hid knives.

But nothing had prepared him for the possibility that the woman standing in front of him held a piece of his past he never knew existed.

“Your mother worked here?” Adrian asked.

Clara nodded slowly.

“Her name was Margaret Bennett.”

The name struck something inside him.

Adrian walked back toward his desk.

“Margaret…”

He repeated it like he was searching through a memory buried beneath years of pain.

“She worked for my father.”

“Yes.”

Clara looked down at her hands.

“She was the head housekeeper when I was a child.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible. My father never mentioned a daughter.”

“My mother never wanted anyone to know.”

“Why?”

Clara hesitated.

Because the truth was not simple.

“Because she was afraid.”

The word changed the atmosphere.

Adrian leaned forward.

“Afraid of who?”

Clara looked toward the door.

Then lowered her voice.

“Your father.”

For the first time in years, Adrian felt something colder than anger.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For the truth.

“My father died eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then why would she be afraid of him?”

Clara took a breath.

“Because before she disappeared from this house, my mother found something.”

“What?”

“She found out that Evelyn’s accident was not an accident.”

The room went silent.

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

“Your mother knew?”

“She tried to tell someone.”

“Who?”

Clara looked directly into his eyes.

“Your father.”

Adrian froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

She continued.

“But before she could reach him, she was fired.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“My father would never—”

Clara interrupted gently.

“Mr. Ashford, I didn’t say he was responsible.”

That stopped him.

“I said someone made sure he never heard the truth.”

The words hung between them.

A knock came at the door.

Mateo entered quickly.

“Adrian, we found something else.”

He placed an old file on the table.

“The police report from Evelyn’s accident was altered.”

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

A note that had never appeared in the official investigation.

The brakes were intentionally damaged.

Adrian’s hands tightened around the paper.

Then Mateo added the final piece.

“The original investigator who handled Evelyn’s case disappeared two years ago.”

Adrian looked up.

“Disappeared?”

Mateo nodded.

“And before he vanished, he sent one message.”

“What message?”

Mateo looked at Clara.

Then back at Adrian.

“He wrote…”

A pause.

“He wrote: ‘The maid’s daughter knows the truth.’”

Everyone turned toward Clara.

For years, she had lived quietly.

Cleaning rooms.

Serving food.

Avoiding attention.

But now the most powerful man in the city was looking at her like she was the key to a mystery worth killing for.

And somewhere outside the mansion…

Someone else had realized the same thing.

Because Clara’s phone suddenly lit up.
