Chapter 3: The Letter From The Dead Woman

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The storm outside continued to rage, but inside the Ashford mansion, the silence was louder than thunder.

Adrian stared at the piece of paper in Clara’s hand.

The color drained from his face.

“Where did you get that?”

Clara looked down at the faded note.

“It was on the floor.”

Vanessa stepped forward immediately.

“Give it to me.”

But Adrian raised his hand.

“No.”

One word.

Cold.

Final.

Vanessa stopped.

Adrian had built his empire by recognizing lies before they destroyed him.

And right now, every instinct he had was screaming.

He took the paper from Clara carefully.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

He knew those letters.

He had memorized them years ago.

Because they belonged to the woman he had loved.

Evelyn.

His wife.

Emma’s mother.

The woman everyone believed had died in a car accident.

Adrian read the message again.

She was murdered.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“That’s impossible.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

“Adrian, you cannot seriously believe this. Someone is manipulating you.”

But Adrian wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at Clara.

“Where exactly was this found?”

“Near the office.”

“Who had access to that room?”

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“No one.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“That wasn’t my question.”

The mansion staff had gathered silently in the hallway.

Everyone knew something terrible was happening.

Because Adrian Ashford was not a man who showed emotion.

Not after losing his wife.

Not after being betrayed by business partners.

Not after destroying enemies who thought they could hurt him.

But now his hands were shaking.

Clara watched him carefully.

She had seen powerful men before.

Most of them were cruel because they had never experienced losing control.

But Adrian looked different.

He looked like a man discovering that the worst moment of his life had been built on a lie.

“Mr. Ashford,” Clara said softly.

He looked at her.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

She hesitated.

Then she reached into the pocket of her uniform and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this three months ago.”

Adrian froze.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Clara looked down.

“Because Vanessa told me if I spoke, I would lose my job.”

The room went silent.

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Evelyn.

Alive.

Standing beside someone familiar.

Someone who should never have been near her.

Someone Adrian trusted completely.

His closest friend.

Daniel Cross.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Get me every security recording from the last six months.”

The guards immediately moved.

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

Because she realized something.

The maid she ignored.

The woman everyone underestimated.

Was the one person who had just started destroying everything she built.
