Chapter 7 - The Mafia Boss Offered His Empire to Save Her—But Arya Discovered the Woman Being Held Hostage Knew Who Really Murdered Her FatherAt six seventeen the following morning, Arya Brooks walked into Dante Moretti's private office carrying a cup of black coffee and a decision he was not going to like.

Dante stood before a wall of surveillance monitors.
He had not slept.
Neither had she.
For twelve hours, Carlo Bianchi had held Mrs. Donnelly somewhere in New York, sending photographs that became progressively more disturbing. The elderly woman's oxygen supply was running low. Her blood pressure medication had been withheld. A physician working for the Moretti family estimated she might not survive another day without proper treatment.
Arya placed the coffee on Dante's desk.
"I'm going."
Dante did not turn.
"No."
"You haven't even heard my plan."
"I heard enough."
She folded her arms.
"Carlo wants the ledger. I'm the person who controls it. That means he has to negotiate with me."
"He wants you dead."
"Then why hasn't he killed Mrs. Donnelly?"
Dante finally faced her.
"Because she's bait."
"Exactly."
"Arya."
"He needs something from me. That gives me leverage."
Dante crossed the office.
"You're not walking into another warehouse."
"Then stop treating me like the woman who walked into the first one."
He stopped.
Arya felt her pulse quicken, but she refused to retreat.
Three weeks earlier, she would have lowered her eyes.
Three weeks earlier, she would have apologized for challenging a powerful man.
Now she stood in front of New York's most feared crime boss and demanded to be heard.
"You told me the ledger belongs to me," she continued. "You told me I could decide what happened to it."
"And you can."
"Unless my decision frightens you?"
Dante's expression hardened.
"That isn't fair."
"Neither is watching an innocent woman die because men with expensive suits are fighting over secrets."
The words landed.
For several seconds, Dante said nothing.
Then he walked to his desk and opened a drawer.
Inside lay Luca's silver watch.
Dante picked it up.
"I buried my brother three days ago."
Arya's anger softened.
"I know."
"I watched you nearly die in front of me."
"I know that too."
He looked at her.
"You think I don't understand what it costs to protect someone?"
Arya stepped closer.
"I think you understand the cost of losing people. I'm asking you to understand the cost of controlling them."
Dante lowered his eyes.
That was the problem with Arya Brooks.
She did not fear his reputation enough to accept his answers.
And she had begun to recognize the difference between his love and his worst instincts.
After a long silence, he returned the watch to its drawer.
"Tell me your plan."
Arya exhaled.
"First, we stop assuming Carlo only wants the ledger."
Dante frowned.
"What else would he want?"
"The recording showed him threatening my mother. He knew about me before Lorenzo died. If he wanted the ring, he had seventeen years to find it."
Dante considered this.
"He may not have known where you were."
"Maybe. But he knew enough to recognize me the moment I arrived here."
She placed her mother's journal on the desk.
"I think he's afraid of something inside the ledger."
Dante looked at the book.
"Something specific?"
"Something that proves he was more than my father's enemy."
Arya opened to a page she had marked during the night.
Her mother's handwriting filled the paper.
Beneath a date from seventeen years earlier was one sentence.
Carlo knows about the second child.
Dante read the translation twice.
Then looked at her.
"Second child?"
Arya nodded.
"I thought it meant another family's child. But look at the next entry."
Dante read.
If they find the boy, everything Lorenzo sacrificed will have been for nothing.
The room became silent.
Arya looked directly at him.
"Did my father have a son?"
Dante's face remained still.
"I don't know."
"Could he have?"
"Yes."
Arya stared at the page.
A brother.
The possibility struck her with an emotion she could not immediately name.
Hope.
Fear.
Grief for a family she had never known.
"Why would my mother write about him?"
"Perhaps she was protecting him."
"From whom?"
Dante's eyes darkened.
"Carlo."
Before Arya could answer, the office door opened.
Evelyn Park entered carrying her laptop.
"I found something."
She placed it on the desk.
"The video from the ledger wasn't stored like an ordinary file. It was divided into fragments, each authenticated by a different witness."
Dante leaned closer.
"Can you identify the witnesses?"
"One was the original recording. Another appears to be a statement from someone present during Lorenzo's final hours."
Arya felt a chill.
"Who?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"That's the interesting part."
She opened a document.
An old hospital record appeared.
The patient name was partially obscured, but Arya recognized the surname.
Donnelly.
She stared.
"Mrs. Donnelly?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Margaret Donnelly worked as a private nurse in Palermo before moving to the United States."
Dante's expression changed.
"She was in Sicily?"
"For almost twenty years."
Arya remembered the elderly woman who lived downstairs in Queens.
The woman who always brought groceries when Jack Brooks disappeared on gambling binges.
The woman who knew how to make the same Italian soup Arya's mother had prepared when she was little.
The woman who had once cried when Arya asked whether she resembled her mother.
"Oh my God."
Arya covered her mouth.
"She knew."
Dante looked at the screen.
"She was watching over you."
"All these years?"
Evelyn opened another file.
A bank transfer history.
Small payments had been deposited into an account belonging to Margaret Donnelly for seventeen years.
The sender was concealed behind a trust.
But the trust's original name was visible.
VALENTINETTI FAMILY PROTECTION FUND.
Arya sat down.
Her knees had stopped supporting her.
Mrs. Donnelly had not been an ordinary neighbor.
She had been placed near Arya to protect her.
And Carlo Bianchi had found her.
At nine forty-three, Carlo called.
Dante activated the speakerphone.
"Good morning, Dante."
Carlo sounded cheerful.
"You look tired."
Dante stared at the surveillance screen.
"Where is Margaret?"
"Safe enough."
"Let me speak to her."
"First, we discuss the ledger."
Arya leaned toward the phone.
"Carlo."
Silence.
Then a low chuckle.
"Princess."
"My name is Arya."
"Of course it is."
"Mrs. Donnelly needs her medication."
"Then perhaps you should stop wasting my time."
Arya swallowed her anger.
"What do you want?"
"The ring. The authentication device. Every copy of whatever Evelyn Park has accessed."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow at hearing her name.
Carlo continued.
"And I want Dante to transfer control of three waterfront companies to my representatives."
Dante's expression hardened.
"You're asking for half a billion dollars in assets."
"I'm asking for what your father promised me."
Arya glanced at Dante.
"What did Salvatore promise you?"
Carlo laughed.
"Ask your boyfriend."
Dante leaned forward.
"Don't play games."
"Games? Your father built an empire on promises, Dante. Some of us are still waiting to collect."
Arya interrupted.
"Why do you need Mrs. Donnelly?"
Carlo fell silent.
"Because she knows what happened to Lorenzo?"
A pause.
"Careful, little wolf."
"Because she knows about the second child?"
The line went completely quiet.
Dante looked at Arya.
Evelyn stopped typing.
Then Carlo spoke.
His voice had lost every trace of amusement.
"Who told you about the boy?"
Arya's heart pounded.
"My mother."
Carlo inhaled sharply.
"That woman should have burned her diary."
The call disconnected.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Dante reached for his phone.
"Saul. I want every property Carlo owns, every vehicle, every associate, every account."
Arya stood.
"And I want to speak to Mrs. Donnelly."
Dante looked at her.
"We'll find her."
"No. I mean when we do, I want her to tell me everything."
He nodded.
"No more secrets."
The search took seven hours.
Evelyn traced a series of financial transactions linked to a medical supply company Carlo had purchased through intermediaries. The company operated several private rehabilitation facilities, including one in northern New Jersey.
Saul's men located a vehicle matching the one seen near Mrs. Donnelly's apartment.
The vehicle had entered the facility before dawn.
At five twenty that evening, Dante received confirmation.
Margaret Donnelly was inside.
So were six armed guards.
Carlo was not.
Dante prepared a rescue operation.
Arya insisted on accompanying the team as far as the medical staging area.
This time, he agreed.
But before they left, he caught her hand.
"One condition."
She looked at him.
"You stay with the doctors until the building is secure."
Arya considered the request.
"That's reasonable."
Dante almost smiled.
"You're becoming difficult to negotiate with."
"I learned from someone difficult."
He brushed his thumb over her knuckles.
"Then perhaps I should be proud."
The operation began after sunset.
Arya waited in an unmarked medical vehicle two blocks from the facility.
She heard radio traffic.
Footsteps.
A shouted command.
Then silence.
Minutes stretched.
Finally, Saul's voice came through.
"Building secure. Hostage located."
Arya closed her eyes.
"Is she alive?"
Dante answered through the radio.
"She's alive."
Arya exhaled.
"But she needs medical attention."
When Margaret Donnelly was brought outside, Arya barely recognized her.
The elderly woman's face was bruised.
Her silver hair hung loosely around her shoulders.
She looked smaller than Arya remembered.
But when she saw Arya, tears filled her eyes.
"Little bird."
Arya ran to her.
Mrs. Donnelly had called her that since childhood.
Arya knelt beside the stretcher.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Margaret began crying.
"I promised your mother."
"Promised what?"
"That you would have a normal life."
Arya laughed through tears.
"That didn't work very well."
Margaret touched her cheek.
"No, sweetheart. I suppose it didn't."
The paramedic adjusted her oxygen.
Margaret gripped Arya's wrist.
"Listen carefully."
"Don't strain yourself."
"Your father didn't die the way Dante believes."
Arya froze.
Dante stood a few feet away.
He turned.
Margaret looked directly at him.
"You were there that night."
Dante nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"You fired the gun."
His face hardened.
"Yes."
Margaret's eyes filled.
"But Lorenzo was already dying."
Arya stopped breathing.
"What?"
Margaret struggled to continue.
"Salvatore arranged everything. Carlo prepared the medication. Lorenzo was poisoned before Dante entered the room."
Dante stepped backward.
"No."
Margaret looked at him with exhausted pity.
"You were twenty-two. Your father needed you to believe you had killed Lorenzo. He needed you trapped by guilt."
Dante stared.
For seventeen years, he had carried the memory of firing the fatal shot.
The moment that had made him a killer in his father's eyes.
The moment that had given him an empire.
Now the foundation of that memory was collapsing.
Arya whispered, "Then who killed my father?"
Margaret looked at her.
"Carlo administered the poison."
A terrible silence followed.
Then Margaret added something that changed everything.
"But Carlo wasn't acting alone."
Dante looked up.
"Who else?"
Margaret's voice became barely audible.
"The boy."
Arya leaned closer.
"What boy?"
"The second child."
Margaret began coughing.
The paramedic moved forward.
"We need to transport her now."
Arya held her hand.
"Mrs. Donnelly, please."
The elderly woman forced out one final sentence.
"Your brother is alive."
Then she lost consciousness.
Arya remained kneeling beside the stretcher as the paramedics hurried toward the ambulance.
Dante approached.
He looked as shaken as she felt.
"She'll survive," he said quietly.
Arya turned toward him.
"Did you know?"
"No."
"Did you know I had a brother?"
"No."
She searched his face.
For once, she believed him without hesitation.
Then Dante's phone rang.
Saul.
His voice was tense.
"Boss, we found something in the facility's records."
"What?"
"A patient file."
Dante listened.
His expression changed.
"Send it."
A photograph appeared on his phone.
A young man.
Twenty-seven years old.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A scar above his left eyebrow.
His face resembled Lorenzo Valentinetti so closely that Arya felt physically sick.
Below the photograph was a name.
MATTEO VALENTINETTI.
And beneath it:
CURRENT EMPLOYER: MORETTI HOLDINGS.
Arya stared at the screen.
Her brother was alive.
He had been living in New York.
May you like
And he had been working for Dante Moretti.
For six years.
