Chapter 3 - Dante sat on the edge of the bed.

“Bathroom.”

His face looked pale.

“Luca is securing the grounds.”

He nodded toward Arya.

“You help me.”

“I don’t know how.”

“Clean.”

“Pack.”

“Wrap.”

Dante gave her a tired look.

“It isn’t brain surgery.”

Then:

“Try not to faint.”

Arya found antiseptic and gauze.

Her hands trembled when she touched him.

Dante hissed when alcohol reached the raw wound.

His muscles tightened beneath her fingers.

Being this close to him was overwhelming.

His body carried scars everywhere.

Knife wounds.

Bullet marks.

Evidence of years she knew almost nothing about.

“Why did you save me?”

Arya taped the bandage.

“In the alley.”

Dante looked up.

“You could have stayed behind the car.”

His eyes were less guarded from pain and adrenaline.

“I don’t let what belongs under my protection get broken.”

Arya’s breath slowed.

“Until I say otherwise…”

His gaze held hers.

“…you are the most valuable thing in my life.”

It was not love.

It was ownership.

From Dante Moretti, the distinction felt disturbingly small.

He stood carefully.

“Where is the box?”

Arya brought Mick’s metal lockbox from the entry hall.

They sat on the living-room floor with glasses of old whiskey.

Dante took a suppressed pistol from a drawer.

He fired once into the lock.

The box opened.

Inside were the remains of Arya’s earlier life.

Her birth certificate.

Her mother’s Italian passport.

Photographs of a woman Arya barely remembered holding a baby.

And beneath them, an old leather journal.

Arya opened it.

Italian handwriting filled every page.

“I can’t read this.”

Dante took the book carefully.

He began reading.

The deeper he went, the darker his face became.

Arya waited.

“What?”

He continued.

“What does it say?”

Dante finally looked up.

Betrayal had replaced suspicion.

“Your mother’s diary.”

He looked back toward the pages.

“She writes about Lorenzo.”

“How much she loved him.”

Arya sat still.

“And why she ran.”

Dante’s voice slowed.

“She did not only hide you from Lorenzo’s enemies.”

He looked at Arya.

“She hid you from his allies.”

Dante turned the journal toward her.

1 name appeared repeatedly.

Salvatore Moretti.

“My father.”

Dante’s voice was quiet.

Arya looked up sharply.

“Before I killed Lorenzo…”

Dante continued.

“…Salvatore Moretti served as his underboss.”

He looked at the diary.

“According to your mother, my father informed federal authorities about Lorenzo’s operations.”

Arya’s stomach tightened.

“He engineered his collapse.”

“So he could take over.”

Dante nodded.

“Your mother discovered it.”

He turned another page.

“She understood Salvatore would kill both of you if he learned she knew.”

Silence filled the room.

The rivalry between Moretti and Valentinetti had not simply been territorial.

It had begun with betrayal.

“Your father betrayed mine.”

Arya’s voice was hollow.

Dante looked toward her.

“And I killed yours while cleaning up what mine started.”

He did not excuse himself.

“The history between us is blood.”

Arya felt tears gather.

“What happens now?”

For a moment, Dante lifted 1 hand toward her face.

Then stopped and lowered it.

“Now I find the person who sold our location in the Bronx.”

He finished his whiskey.

“And I finish the war Salvatore started.”

Dante stood.

“But first…”

He looked toward the stairs.

“…we sleep.”

“Tomorrow, we hunt.”

He showed Arya to a guest room.

Checked each window.

Secured the door.

Then, unexpectedly, he stayed.

Dante sat in an armchair in the corner.

A pistol rested across his lap.

“Sleep.”

Arya stared.

“I’ll watch.”

She could not imagine sleeping with the most dangerous man in New York sitting in the corner.

Exhaustion eventually made the decision for her.

The last thing Arya saw before falling asleep was Dante’s silhouette in the chair, guarding the room like a dragon protecting something it considered its own.

The following 2 days became a strange period of calm.

An eye inside a storm.

Dante spent hours on encrypted calls from the terrace.

His Italian carried through the house like distant thunder.

Luca and 4 armed guards patrolled continuously.

Arya was not permitted beyond the building or immediate grounds.

She felt like a valuable bird trapped inside a gilded cage.

Her feelings toward Dante became increasingly difficult to separate.

He remained ruthless.

At one point, he ordered Luca to break the fingers of a gardener Dante suspected had been talking too freely in town.

Yet around Arya, some of the hard edges changed.

Dante insisted he could change his own bandages.

He nevertheless allowed Arya to help him dress.

Whenever she moved close enough to pull his shirt over the injured shoulder, his eyes followed her with an intensity that heated her skin.

On the second evening, Dante cooked steaks himself.

Rare.

He cut into his meat with almost surgical precision.

“I have to return to the city tonight.”

Arya dropped her fork.

“You’re leaving.”

“You’re safer here.”

Dante continued cutting.

“I found the leak.”

“A capo in Queens.”

His voice became colder.

“I need to make an example personally.”

Arya understood.

“If I don’t, I look weak.”

Dante glanced toward her.

“In this life, weak means dead.”

“How long?”

She hated hearing the need in her own voice.

“24 hours.”

Dante set down his knife.

“Luca stays.”

“Rocco stays.”

“Vinnie stays.”

He referred to 2 of the armed guards.

“You do not leave the house.”

His gaze hardened.

“Understood?”

“I’m not a child.”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“You are a target.”

Arya fell silent.

“Vinnie Rossi knows I have you.”

Dante continued.

“He knows you are Lorenzo Valentinetti’s daughter.”

He leaned slightly forward.

“He will tear New York apart to find you.”

Then:

“Do not challenge me on this.”

Dante left at midnight.

Before getting into the car, however, he stopped.

Without warning, he caught Arya by the back of the neck and pulled her against him.

His mouth crashed into hers.

Coffee.

Possession.

Heat.

It was brief and bruising.

“Be here when I return.”

His voice was rough against her lips.

Then he left.

Arya remained at the entrance touching her mouth while the taillights disappeared.

The next day moved slowly.

Storm clouds gathered over Southampton.

Luca spent most of the afternoon monitoring cameras.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., a delivery van stopped at the outer gate.

Arya was in the kitchen when she noticed it.

“Are we expecting something?”

Luca frowned.

“No.”

He spoke into his radio.

“Rocco.”

A pause.

“Check the gate.”

Rocco approached the intercom.

Arya watched through a window.

Rocco spoke to the driver for several seconds.

Then he entered the security code.

The iron gates opened.

Luca slammed his coffee cup down.

“What are you doing?”

He grabbed the radio.

“Rocco.”

No answer.

“Stand down.”

The delivery van rolled onto the property.

“Do not open that gate!”

Rocco ignored him.

Luca seized Arya’s arm.

“Panic room.”

He pulled her toward the stairs.

“Basement.”

They never reached it.

The front doors exploded inward.

Rocco stood in the entrance holding a shotgun.

Behind him were 4 masked men.

Luca positioned himself between Arya and them.

He drew his pistol.

“Rocco.”

His voice became lethal.

“What are you doing?”

“Sorry.”

Rocco showed no emotion.

“Rossi pays better.”

A pause.

“And he doesn’t shoot his own men for small mistakes.”

“You traitorous—”

Rocco fired.

The shotgun blast struck Luca in the chest.

He flew backward into the wall.

Then slid down it.

A bright smear of blood followed him.

Arya screamed.

2 masked men reached her before she could run.

She fought wildly.

Kicking.

Biting.

Gloved hands restrained her.

“Easy, princess.”

1 man tightened his hold.

“Mr. Rossi wants you intact.”

“Don’t make us damage the merchandise.”

Rocco walked over to Luca.

He spat on the body.

Then looked toward Arya.

“Tell Dante he should spend more time watching his own house…”

His face remained cold.

“…instead of chasing ghosts.”

They dragged her into the rain.

Her wrists were zip-tied.

She was thrown into the back of the van.

As the vehicle left the estate, Arya stared toward the closing gates.

Luca was dead.

The fortress had failed.

Dante’s promise of safety had collapsed.

She was alone.

Vinnie Rossi operated from a defunct meatpacking facility in a part of the industrial district that redevelopment had not reached.

Inside, the air was brutally cold.

Old blood.

Bleach.

Rotting sweetness.

Arya was tied to a rusted metal chair in the center of the kill floor.

The zip ties around her wrists were tight enough that her fingers were beginning to lose sensation.

Heavy hooks hung from motorized chains above her.

They moved slightly in the draft.

Men in ski masks stood around the perimeter holding weapons.

Footsteps eventually sounded above.

Slow.

Heavy.

Vinnie Rossi descended from the office catwalk.

He was the opposite of Dante.

Dante was polished control.

Vinnie was heat, grease, and excess.

Shorter.

Heavy through the stomach.

Cheap silk shirt strained across his body.

Stale cigar smoke and overpowering cologne surrounded him.

His eyes were black and empty.

“So.”

He descended the stairs.

“The lost princess.”

Vinnie smiled.

“Arya Valentinetti.”

He came closer.

“You look like your mother.”

Arya lifted her chin.

Her heart was pounding, but she remembered how Dante entered rooms.

How he used silence.

“My name is Arya Brooks.”

Her voice trembled only slightly.

Vinnie laughed.

A wet wheeze followed.

“Brooks.”

He circled her.

“A name for nobodies.”

His fingers moved over her shoulder.

Arya recoiled.

“A name for people who clean floors.”

He stopped in front of her.

“You are not nobody.”

Vinnie leaned down.

“You are the key.”

His foul breath reached her.

“The living vault of Lorenzo Valentinetti.”

Arya stared.

“Where is the ledger?”

“I don’t know.”

“Dante told me about it.”

She fought tears.

“I’ve never seen it.”

“I was 5 when my father died.”

“Don’t lie.”

Vinnie backhanded her.

White light burst behind Arya’s eyes.

Her lip split against a tooth.

Blood filled her mouth.

“Lorenzo would not leave his legacy unprotected.”

Vinnie caught her chin.

“What did he give you?”

“A key?”

May you like

“Numbers?”

“A nursery rhyme?”
