Chapter 5 - Blood covered her cheek.

Vinnie staggered.

His hand went to his face.

The switchblade fell.

Arya dropped.

Rolled.

Then scrambled behind a heavy industrial mixer.

“Dante!”

Her voice was no longer frightened.

“Now!”

Dante raised his right pistol.

2 shots.

Almost together.

Vinnie Rossi jerked backward.

2 dark wounds appeared in the center of his forehead.

He fell onto the oil-stained floor.

Then everything seemed to stop.

Dust moved through the air.

Sirens could be heard somewhere in the distance.

Dante holstered the pistols.

The killer disappeared from his expression.

He ran.

Dante crossed the space between them and dropped beside Arya.

He pulled her into his arms so hard she could barely breathe.

His hands moved over her face.

Shoulders.

Hair.

Searching for wounds.

“Look at me.”

His voice had lost all calm.

“Arya.”

He lifted her face.

“Are you hit?”

She wrapped both arms around him.

Gunpowder.

Sweat.

His cologne.

The smell of survival.

“I’m okay.”

Adrenaline crashed through her.

She started shaking.

“I’m okay.”

Then:

“You came.”

Her voice broke.

“You really came.”

Dante pulled back.

He held her face between both hands.

His thumbs wiped blood from her cheek.

Vinnie’s blood.

Dante tilted her head and saw the cut along her neck.

His expression darkened immediately.

“I told you.”

His voice became rough.

“I burn the world for what is mine.”

Arya looked at him.

“I would have killed 1,000 men to reach you.”

Then Dante kissed her.

Not gently.

Iron.

Blood.

Relief.

A desperate confirmation that both were still alive.

A low humming interrupted them.

Arya pulled away.

A blue glow appeared between their hands.

“My hand.”

She stared.

“It’s burning.”

They looked down.

The ring was glowing.

The carved wolf had changed.

For approximately 20 years, its jaws had been mechanically locked shut.

Now they were open.

Dante stared.

“The biometric lock.”

Arya looked at him.

“I thought Lorenzo’s mechanism was a myth.”

“What does that mean?”

Dante took her hand carefully.

“The ring monitors you.”

Her eyes widened.

“Pulse.”

“Blood pressure.”

“Cortisol.”

“Adrenaline.”

He examined the mechanism.

“It stays sealed during ordinary life.”

“And even during fear.”

“Flight response.”

Arya remembered Lorenzo’s words.

Dante’s eyes moved to hers.

“It opens only during controlled aggression.”

“When your physiology shifts from fleeing…”

A pause.

“…to fighting.”

He gave a quiet, disbelieving breath.

“Lorenzo designed it to recognize the physical state of a Valentinetti going to war.”

Dante carefully slid the ring from Arya’s finger.

This time, it came away easily.

The internal clamps had withdrawn.

He opened the wolf’s head fully.

Inside the hollow space was a microchip smaller than a grain of rice.

Dante stared.

“The ledger.”

Arya looked at the tiny object.

“The judges.”

Dante continued.

“Politicians.”

“Accounts.”

“Blackmail files.”

He held it carefully.

“This is worth more than Manhattan.”

Arya looked around the warehouse.

Vinnie Rossi’s body lay nearby.

Moretti soldiers were securing the building.

The loan-shark debt no longer mattered.

The Queens apartment no longer mattered.

She now held enough information to destroy much of the criminal and political structure around them.

Or control it.

“What do we do?”

Her voice no longer trembled.

Dante looked directly into her eyes.

He saw the change.

The woman kneeling beside him was not the frightened Gilded Lily bus girl.

“Whatever you want.”

He placed the ring back in Arya’s palm.

Then closed her fingers around it.

“We destroy it.”

He waited.

“Disappear.”

“Live somewhere on an Italian beach.”

Arya listened.

“Or we use it.”

His gaze remained steady.

“We bring every major family in the 5 boroughs to its knees.”

A pause.

“We rule.”

Arya looked at the ring.

Then slid it back onto her finger.

The blue light faded.

The wolf’s jaw remained open.

Ready.

“We don’t run.”

Dante’s expression changed.

“We stay.”

Arya looked at him.

“The Valentinetti family and the Moretti family are united now.”

She stood.

“Let everyone know we have the ledger.”

Her eyes were cold and steady.

“And let them know that if they come for us…”

She touched the ring.

“…they don’t only face the wolf.”

Arya looked at Dante.

“They face the dragon too.”

Dante smiled.

It was the first genuine smile she had seen from him.

Dangerous.

Sharp.

Alive.

“As you wish.”

He offered his hand.

“My queen.”

Arya took it.

Together, they walked through the aftermath of the warehouse battle and into the white light of the New York morning.

Sirens were approaching.

For the first time, neither of them seemed concerned.

Vinnie Rossi was dead.

The Valentinetti ledger had been recovered.

The secret Salvatore Moretti had tried to bury had been exposed.

Luca had been killed, Rocco’s betrayal had been revealed, and Dante had answered Arya’s abduction with open war.

Arya Brooks, who had entered the Gilded Lily carrying dirty plates and worrying about a $5,000 deadline, now possessed the leverage Lorenzo Valentinetti had hidden for his heir.

Dante Moretti still controlled the city’s most dangerous organization.

But the power between them had changed.

Arya was no longer merely the woman he had taken from a restaurant or the daughter of the man he had killed 10 years earlier.

May you like

She had chosen to stay.

And the Moretti and Valentinetti legacies now stood on the same side.
