Chapter 3 - Shadows in the StudioFor the next forty-eight hours, the city was alive with rumors.

The viral video of the "Gala Crasher" had accumulated tens of millions of views. Online commentators were fiercely divided. Some criticized the cruelty of the woman in the red dress—Vanessa—while others sneered at the "fake socialite" whose dress had been ripped to shreds. Through it all, Elena remained completely silent. She did not post a statement. She did not release an edit.

Inside the private workshop of Atelier Whitmore, steam hissed from industrial irons as seamstresses worked around the clock.

Elena stood in front of a dress form holding a new piece of fabric. It was identical to the silver silk destroyed at the gala, but this time, she was weaving threads of real platinum wire through the hem.

The door to the workshop opened, and Julian Vance walked in.

"Miss Elena," Julian said softly. "We traced the financial trail behind the smear campaign. Julian Sinclair just transferred two million dollars to an offshore account registered in Panama."

Elena didn't stop her stitching. "Who was the recipient?"

"A former junior designer who worked for your atelier six months ago," Julian said. "A woman named Chloe Vance—no relation to me. She was let go for selling confidential sketches to third-party manufacturers."

Elena froze, the needle hovering millimeters above the silver silk. "They're going to claim I stole the design from Chloe."

"Exactly," Julian confirmed. "Sinclair Global is planning to file an emergency copyright injunction tomorrow morning—two hours before your official press launch. They intend to have federal marshals freeze your collection and seize the showroom."

Elena let out a long, quiet breath. She leaned against the cutting table, looking at the silver dress.

"They really don't know when to stop, do they?" she murmured.

"When people are used to buying their way out of consequences, equality feels like oppression," Julian said quietly. "Vanessa Sinclair believes she is fighting for her survival. People like that will burn down the whole forest just to keep from getting cold."

"Where is Vanessa right now?" Elena asked.

"She’s currently hosting an exclusive pre-launch cocktail party at the Grandview Club," Julian reported. "She’s telling her inner circle that she personally exposed a high-level fraud, and that the Whitmore family is covering up for an illegitimate child."

Elena turned around, a slow, cold smile spreading across her lips. "An illegitimate child? Is that the narrative now?"

"They are getting desperate," Julian said.

Elena walked over to her desk, picked up her phone, and dialed her father.

"Dad," she said as soon as Marcus picked up. "Don't cancel Sinclair Global's contracts yet."

There was a brief pause on the line. "Why not, Elena? They are slandering your name across every media network."

"Because if you cut them off now, they will play the victim. They will claim the big, bad Whitmore conglomerate crushed a small competitor to silence the truth," Elena explained, her voice steady and resolute. "Let them file the injunction. Let them invite the press. Let them stand on the grandest stage they can build."

"And then?" Marcus asked, a hint of pride in his deep voice.

"And then I'll tear their lives apart the same way she tore my dress," Elena said smoothly. "Publicly, completely, and without a single shred of mercy."

That evening, the Grandview Club was packed with elite guests.

Vanessa Sinclair stood near the bar, holding a martini, wearing a velvet emerald gown. She was surrounded by flattered socialites and eager reporters from small tabloid outlets.

"It was obvious from the moment she walked in," Vanessa boasted, taking a sip of her drink. "The fit was completely wrong. The stitching on the bodice was sloppy. When I confronted her, she couldn't even name the designer! Of course, now Marcus Whitmore is trying to claim she's his daughter to save face. It’s pathetic, really."

"Is it true that Sinclair Global is suing her tomorrow?" a reporter asked eagerly.

"We are protecting the integrity of the fashion industry," Vanessa said, holding her head high. "Tomorrow at ten o'clock, the truth will come out. That girl won't just be humiliated. She'll be in handcuffs."

From the shadow of the VIP balcony, a man in a plain black suit took a photograph of Vanessa's laughing face and sent it straight to Elena's phone.

Elena looked at the picture on her screen, sitting in the quiet darkness of her car outside the club.

"Enjoy the party, Vanessa," Elena whispered to the screen. "Tomorrow, the bill arrives."
