Chapter 5: A Father's Impossible Truth

## Chapter 5: A Father's Impossible Truth

The street outside Sofía's apartment fell into complete silence.

Even the flashing police lights seemed less noticeable after the stranger's words.

"I believe... I'm your father."

Elena stared at the silver-haired man, unable to process what she had just heard.

"What did you say?"

The man took another cautious step forward.

"My name is Alejandro Navarro."

His voice trembled.

"I've been searching for you for twenty-six years."

Elena instinctively backed away.

"No."

She shook her head.

"No... my father died before I was born."

"So I was told."

The older man's eyes glistened.

"But it was a lie."

---

Adrián immediately stepped between them.

"That's enough."

He positioned himself protectively in front of Elena.

"Who are you, really?"

Alejandro calmly reached into the inside pocket of his coat.

Every police officer stiffened.

Instead of a weapon, he slowly produced a worn leather wallet.

From it, he removed a faded photograph.

"I've carried this every day for twenty-six years."

He handed it to Adrián.

The photograph showed a young woman with long dark hair standing beside a handsome man in a military uniform.

The woman...

Looked exactly like Elena.

Only older.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same small dimple in her left cheek.

Elena's breathing became uneven.

"My mother..."

Alejandro nodded.

"Lucía Vargas."

Elena felt the world tilt beneath her feet.

"You knew my mother?"

"I loved her."

---

The ambulance doctor approached carefully.

"Miss Vargas, perhaps you should sit down."

Elena didn't hear him.

She couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.

"My mother never mentioned you."

"I know."

Alejandro lowered his head.

"Because she believed I had abandoned her."

"You did."

"I never had the chance."

---

One of the detectives stepped closer.

"Mr. Navarro has been cooperating with us."

Adrián frowned.

"Cooperating?"

The detective nodded.

"The men who attempted to kidnap Miss Vargas..."

"They're connected to a criminal organization we've been investigating."

Alejandro continued.

"They weren't sent by me."

"I've been trying to find them before they found you."

Elena looked at him with growing confusion.

"Why would anyone want to kidnap me?"

Alejandro hesitated.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.

"Because they finally discovered who you are."

---

Hours later...

Everyone gathered inside a private conference room at the police headquarters.

The detectives closed the door.

No reporters.

No interruptions.

Alejandro placed a thick file on the table.

"I wanted to tell you under different circumstances."

He slowly opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of newspaper articles.

Old photographs.

Legal documents.

Letters.

Bank records.

Everything carefully organized.

He pushed one newspaper toward Elena.

The headline read:

BUSINESSMAN ALEJANDRO NAVARRO DISAPPEARS AFTER TESTIFYING AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME

The date was twenty-seven years earlier.

"I wasn't dead."

Alejandro spoke quietly.

"I was placed into witness protection."

Elena looked up sharply.

"What?"

"I testified against one of Spain's largest criminal syndicates."

"The organization murdered judges."

"Police officers."

"Journalists."

"And anyone connected to me."

He swallowed.

"The government faked my death."

Elena couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"My mother..."

Alejandro nodded sadly.

"They told her I had died in a car explosion."

"And she believed them."

---

The room remained silent.

Finally, Elena asked the question that had haunted her since childhood.

"If you were alive..."

"Why didn't you come back?"

Alejandro closed his eyes.

"They promised me they would relocate Lucía."

"They promised she'd be protected."

"They lied."

His voice cracked.

"By the time I discovered the truth..."

"...she was already gone."

Elena's hands trembled.

"My mother died when I was six."

"I know."

Alejandro's eyes filled with tears.

"I visited her grave every year."

"You were there?"

"Every birthday."

"Every anniversary."

"I stood far away because I wasn't allowed to reveal I was alive."

He smiled sadly.

"You always left white lilies."

Elena froze.

"I still do."

"I know."

"You once dropped your teddy bear."

Alejandro reached into his briefcase.

He carefully removed a small, faded stuffed bear.

The left ear had been sewn back on with blue thread.

Elena gasped.

"No..."

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

"Mr. Buttons..."

She reached for it with shaking hands.

"I searched for him for weeks."

Alejandro smiled through his tears.

"I found him after you left the cemetery."

"I couldn't bring him back."

"But I couldn't throw him away either."

For twenty years...

He had kept the little bear.

Waiting for the day he could finally return it.

Elena hugged the worn toy against her chest.

The memories came flooding back.

Her mother.

The cemetery.

The lilies.

The little bear she had cried over as a child.

This man...

Had really been there.

All those years.

Watching from a distance.

Unable to tell her the truth.

---

Across the room...

Adrián quietly observed everything.

His heart grew heavier with every passing minute.

He had spent one day doubting Elena.

Meanwhile...

She had spent twenty-six years living inside someone else's tragedy.

He slowly walked over to her.

"Elena..."

She looked at him.

"I'm so sorry."

"I know those words aren't enough."

"They never will be."

"I just..."

His voice faltered.

"I don't want to lose you."

Elena stared at him for several seconds.

"I don't know if you've already lost me."

The answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

---

Suddenly...

A detective's phone rang.

His expression changed immediately.

"What?"

He stood up.

"When?"

Everyone looked toward him.

He turned to Alejandro.

"They escaped."

Alejandro's face drained of color.

"Who?"

"The three men from the apartment."

"They've disappeared."

The detective continued listening.

Then he slowly lowered the phone.

"They left a message."

"What message?"

The detective swallowed hard.

"They said..."

He looked directly at Elena.

"...if they can't take the daughter..."

His voice became almost inaudible.

"...they'll take the grandson."

A chilling silence swept across the room.

Alejandro immediately stood.

"No."

Adrián instinctively moved closer to Elena.

The detective's next words sent fear through everyone present.

"They also knew something that wasn't released to the public."

"What?"

"They knew the baby is a boy."

Only four people had known that secret.

Elena.

Adrián.

Dr. Romero.

And...

Someone inside the room.

Someone was leaking information.

May you like

Someone close to them...

Was working with the people hunting Elena and her unborn son.
