He Chose to Protect His Mother... and Lost the Woman Carrying His Child
The kitchen of the Luján mansion looked far too pristine to conceal so much cruelty.
The marble gleamed beneath the morning sunlight. Massive windows flooded the room with the golden rays of Madrid, and on the center island rested fine porcelain plates, crystal glasses, and a bouquet of freshly cut lilies. Everything was elegant, expensive, flawless.
Everything except the way Doña Victoria looked at Elena.
Elena stood beside the stainless-steel refrigerator, one hand resting protectively on her six-month pregnant belly while the other gripped the edge of the marble countertop.
She wore a simple beige dress that gently outlined her pregnancy, impossible to hide. Her eyes were red from crying, yet she fought to remain composed.
Doña Victoria, Adrián Luján's mother, stared at her as though she were nothing more than a stain on the polished floor.
"I'm only going to say this once," the older woman declared, adjusting her designer red jacket. "My son is not going to ruin his life over a girl like you."

Elena took a slow, steady breath.
"I don't want to ruin his life. I only want Adrián to take responsibility for what we've built together."
Victoria let out a cold, humorless laugh.
"Built? My dear, you haven't built anything. You walked into this house with your tears, your little stories, and now this pregnancy that no one has even verified."
The words pierced Elena's heart.
"This baby is Adrián's."
"So you claim."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
From the hallway, two housemaids pretended to arrange a serving tray while quietly listening. In that house, secrets never stayed hidden for long.
Elena lowered her voice.
"Doña Victoria... please don't humiliate me. I've never done anything to hurt you."
The older woman stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the marble.
"Yes, you have. You tried to steal my son's future."
She picked up a black folder from the countertop and hurled it at Elena. Papers scattered across the floor like dead birds.
"Sign it."
Elena stared at the documents.
"What is this?"
"An agreement. You'll leave Madrid. You'll receive money for a few months, and you'll give up any claim against my family."
Elena's eyes widened.
"Are you trying to buy my child?"
Victoria slammed her hand against the marble island.
"Don't call it that in my house."
Elena instinctively stepped backward, her breathing becoming uneven.
"You have no right."
"I have every right when a complete stranger tries to use a pregnancy to force her way into my family's name."
Elena bent down with difficulty to gather the papers, but Victoria reached her first. She grabbed Elena's arm and yanked her back to her feet.
"Stop pretending to be the victim."
"You're hurting me," Elena whispered.
At that exact moment, the kitchen door flew open.
Adrián walked in, his expression tense. He wore a dark navy suit, his phone still clutched in one hand.
"What's going on here?"
A wave of relief washed over Elena.

For one brief second, she believed everything was about to end.
She believed he would see her tears, the bruise forming on her arm, the documents scattered across the floor, and finally understand.
But Doña Victoria moved faster.
"Adrián, thank God you're here. This woman came here to threaten me."
Elena froze.
"What?"
Victoria dramatically pressed a hand against her chest, performing her role with the precision of a seasoned actress.
"She demanded money. She said that if we didn't pay her, she'd go to the press with lies about you."
Adrián turned toward Elena.
"That's not true," she said, her voice trembling. "Your mother asked me to sign those papers and leave. She wanted me to give up our baby."
Victoria pretended to cry, though not a single tear appeared.
"You see? She's already using the child against us."
Adrián closed his eyes for a brief moment.
When he opened them again, he didn't look at the papers.
He didn't look at the bruises on Elena's arm.
He looked only at his mother.
"Mom... calm down."
Something shattered inside Elena.
"Calm down? Adrián, she grabbed me. She insulted me. She told me our child was a lie."
His jaw tightened.
"Elena... my mother can be harsh, but she'd never do something like that without a reason."
The words landed between them like a heavy door slamming shut.
Elena stared at him as though she were looking at a complete stranger wearing the face of the man she loved.
"Are you telling me you believe her?"
Adrián said nothing.
He didn't have to.
Victoria lowered her eyes to hide the smile creeping onto her lips.

Elena placed both hands over her stomach.
The baby moved—small, alive, completely unaware that his mother had just lost a battle she never should have had to fight.
"Last night you told me we were going to be a family," Elena whispered.
Adrián swallowed hard.
"And we will... but not like this. Not with shouting. Not with threats."
"The threats are lying on the floor," she replied, pointing at the scattered documents. "All you had to do was read them."
He didn't move.
In that instant, Elena realized the most painful truth of all.
Adrián didn't want to know the truth.
He wanted his mother to be right, because that meant he would never have to stand against her.
Doña Victoria lifted her chin proudly.
"The best thing you can do now is leave before you cause any more damage."
Elena slowly picked up her handbag.
Every movement felt unbearably heavy.
She walked toward the door, but before stepping out, she stopped.
"I didn't come here asking for money. I didn't come to take anything from you, Adrián. I came because I believed my child deserved a father."
Adrián took a hesitant step toward her.
"Elena..."
She turned around.
Tears streamed down her face, but her voice was steady.
"It's a boy."
The entire kitchen fell silent.
Adrián blinked.
"What?"
Elena gently caressed her belly.
"The doctor confirmed it this morning. He's your son. A little boy."
The color drained from Adrián's face.
Victoria stopped pretending.
Elena reached for the door.
"But today I learned something else."
She looked directly into Adrián's eyes.
"A family name doesn't make a man a father."
Then she walked away.
Adrián ran after her, but by the time he reached the grand foyer, Elena was already descending the sweeping marble staircase with quiet dignity. Outside, a taxi waited beneath the warm Madrid sun.
"Elena! Wait!"
She never looked back.
He rushed down the steps in desperation, but the taxi door closed before he could reach her.
The car pulled away.
Adrián remained standing in the middle of the entrance hall, the weight of his own choices crushing his chest.
Behind him, Doña Victoria appeared without a sound.

"Let her go. She'll come back."
Adrián glanced down at the documents still clenched tightly in his hand.
For the first time, he actually read them.
Waiver of Maternal Rights. Financial Compensation. Absolute Confidentiality.
His fingers began to tremble.
Slowly, he turned toward his mother.
"What have you done?"
Victoria's face turned pale.
But it was already too late.
Outside, the taxi disappeared into the busy streets of Madrid, carrying away the only woman who had ever loved him without asking for anything in return.
May you like
And with her...
The son who might never call him Dad.
