Chapter 2: The Heartbeat He Almost Lost

## Chapter 2: The Heartbeat He Almost Lost

The taxi disappeared into Madrid's afternoon traffic, leaving Adrián standing motionless beneath the towering entrance of the Luján mansion.

He could still hear Elena's final words.

A family name doesn't make a man a father.

For the first time in years, silence frightened him.

"Adrián."

His mother's voice broke through his thoughts.

"Come inside. She's emotional. Once she realizes she can't survive without us, she'll be back."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he unfolded the papers again.

Every page carried the logo of the Luján family's legal office.

Every signature line had already been prepared.

The compensation amount was staggering.

The confidentiality clause stretched over several pages.

But one sentence froze the blood in his veins.

The undersigned agrees never to seek child support, paternal recognition, or inheritance rights on behalf of the unborn child.

His breathing stopped.

"This..." he whispered.

Victoria folded her arms.

"It was necessary."

He slowly raised his eyes.

"You wanted her to erase our son."

"I wanted to protect this family."

"You forged my decision."

"No."

Her expression remained calm.

"I made the decision you were too weak to make."

Adrián stared at the woman who had raised him.

For years, he had believed she always knew what was best.

Now he wasn't so sure.

"You lied to me."

Victoria sighed impatiently.

"I protected you."

"You told me Elena threatened you."

"Because she did."

"She never asked for money."

Victoria remained silent.

That silence told him everything.

For the first time in his life, Adrián looked at his mother not as an untouchable authority...

...but as someone capable of destroying another person's life.

"I'm going after her."

Victoria's face hardened.

"If you leave this house now, don't expect me to welcome that girl back."

Adrián didn't even slow his pace.

"I'm not asking for permission."

The front door slammed behind him.

It echoed through the mansion like thunder.

---

The taxi rolled through the crowded streets of Madrid.

Elena stared out the window without seeing anything.

Her tears had finally stopped.

She felt strangely empty.

The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Are you all right, señora?"

She forced a weak smile.

"I will be."

He nodded gently.

"Would you like me to take you home?"

Elena hesitated.

Home.

The tiny apartment she rented suddenly felt too lonely.

She rested both hands on her stomach.

The baby kicked softly.

A tiny reminder that she wasn't alone.

"No," she answered quietly.

"Take me to San Gabriel Women's Clinic."

The driver changed direction without another question.

---

Twenty minutes later...

Dr. Isabel Romero looked up in surprise as Elena entered her office unexpectedly.

"Elena?"

The doctor immediately noticed her swollen eyes.

"What happened?"

Elena tried to smile.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

She slowly sat down.

"I need copies of every medical record."

"The ultrasound."

"The DNA blood test."

"Everything."

Dr. Romero frowned.

"Did something happen with Adrián?"

Elena lowered her head.

"He chose his mother."

The doctor's shoulders fell.

"I was afraid of that."

Elena looked up.

"You knew?"

"I've seen families like his before."

Dr. Romero opened Elena's medical file.

"They protect their wealth before they protect their own children."

She handed Elena a thick envelope.

"Everything is here."

Ultrasound images.

Blood work.

Prenatal reports.

And one laboratory result that left no room for doubt.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.

Elena looked at the document for several seconds.

"So many pages..."

"And he never even wanted to read one."

Dr. Romero placed a comforting hand over hers.

"Some people reject the truth because accepting it would force them to change."

---

Meanwhile...

Adrián drove across Madrid like a man possessed.

He called Elena once.

No answer.

Twice.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Twenty-three unanswered calls.

He slammed his hand against the steering wheel.

"Damn it."

His assistant suddenly called.

"Mr. Luján?"

"What?"

"I... I wasn't sure whether to mention this."

"What is it?"

"The legal department."

"What about them?"

"They confirmed your mother's office requested those documents three weeks ago."

Adrián's grip tightened.

"Three weeks?"

"Yes, sir."

"They said the instructions came directly from Mrs. Victoria Luján."

"And..."

The assistant hesitated.

"...they were told never to inform you."

Adrián closed his eyes.

Everything Elena had said...

Every word...

Had been true.

---

Across the city...

Elena stepped out of the clinic carrying the envelope tightly against her chest.

Rain had begun to fall.

Soft at first.

Then heavier.

She stood beneath the entrance canopy, wondering where to go next.

Her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

23 Missed Calls.

All from Adrián.

A message appeared seconds later.

Please answer. I know the truth now.

Another.

I'm sorry.

Another.

Please don't disappear.

Elena read every message.

Then quietly locked her phone.

Some apologies arrive only after trust has already died.

She slipped the phone into her purse and walked into the rain.

Not knowing that across the street...

A black luxury sedan had been parked there for nearly ten minutes.

Inside sat a man in an expensive gray suit.

He watched Elena carefully as she disappeared into the crowd.

Then he picked up his phone.

"It's confirmed."

A cold voice answered from the other end.

"Is she alone?"

"Yes."

"And the child?"

The man glanced toward the envelope in Elena's hands.

"Still with her."

A long pause followed.

Finally, the mysterious caller spoke.

"Good."

"Bring them to me before the Luján family does."

The line went dead.

Completely unaware she was being watched...

Elena disappeared into the rainy streets of Madrid, carrying not only her unborn son...

...but a secret powerful enough to change the fate of two families forever.
