Chapter 4 - He was definitely not accusing her of a crime.

He was genuinely curious about the method.

"I absolutely did not alter the computer system itself."

Her nervous voice sounded incredibly small inside the cavernous room.

"I just watched how things worked."

"Explain it."

"The digital system meticulously records volume, but it absolutely does not reconcile the inventory movement in real time until the very end of the long shift."

Clara continued explaining very carefully.

"The floor manager, Marcus, always takes a fifteen-minute cigarette break every single night at exactly one fifteen in the morning right during the heaviest rush."

She elaborated further.

"The bartenders are forced to move much too quickly to properly enter every single cash transaction immediately."

"They just leave temporary piles of loose money sitting right beside the register and then organize them all when the heavy rush finally ends."

Clara bravely looked up into his eyes.

Damian remained perfectly, utterly still.

"I did not take the money directly out of the open register."

She forced herself to bravely continue her confession.

"I quickly removed it straight from the temporary pile on the bar."

Her anxious eyes returned to the top of the desk.

"Then, while I was cleaning up behind the bar, I simply moved the digital pour control attached to the well whiskey just enough to slightly affect its sensitive calibration."

Clara thoroughly described the final result.

"It falsely registered the liquor bottle as being completely empty several drinks too early."

"That missing volume perfectly matched the amount of the missing cash."

Her hands tightened nervously together in her lap.

"It just appeared to be a very busy night plagued with sloppy, inaccurate pours."

A heavy silence settled deeply across the massive desk.

Outside, cold rain struck violently against the glass windows.

Damian carefully selected a very thick leather book and slid it smoothly across the polished wood.

It stopped directly in front of Clara.

"Open it."

She hesitated for a second and then meekly obeyed the command.

The thick pages contained dense, handwritten columns of specific dates, large dollar amounts, and cryptic alphanumeric codes.

It was definitely a ledger, but absolutely not one meant for the nightclub.

It clearly covered something significantly larger and far more complex.

"This book contains the gross revenue generated from my South Ward shipping operations for the entire previous quarter."

Damian’s voice became noticeably lower.

"My trusted chief accountant currently claims we are actively operating at a severe nine percent loss due to heavy overhead and recent union disputes."

His dark eyes completely blackened with rage.

"I strongly believe that my chief accountant is actually purchasing a lavish summer residence in Tuscany using my stolen money."

Clara stared down at the dizzying columns of numbers.

They blurred together briefly before her eyes.

"Why exactly are you showing this to me?"

"I am showing it to you because you cleverly bypassed my expensive security system just to feed yourself."

Damian leaned aggressively forward and placed both hands flat against the top of the desk.

"You clearly understand the hidden space located between the numbers."

His deep voice became much more forceful.

"You perfectly understand the flawed human element."

Damian sharply indicated the open ledger.

"You will carefully review this and identify exactly where he is currently hiding my money."

"I am absolutely not a trained accountant."

Hot panic rapidly rose inside Clara’s chest.

"I know absolutely nothing about the shipping industry or—"

"You possess a brilliant mind that naturally searches for structural cracks."

Damian smoothly interrupted her panic.

"Find the crack."

He calmly returned his attention to the stack of paperwork resting before him.

"You have exactly three days to do it."

The tense conversation was officially over.

Clara remained perfectly still, staring blankly at the dense manila pages.

She was a hostage, a helpless captive, and a prisoner.

Yet, as she slowly moved the heavy ledger into her lap, a very dark and entirely unfamiliar excitement violently twisted inside her stomach.

Damian was no longer just asking her to scrub blood from his dirty floors.

He was literally placing a vital part of his criminal empire directly inside her hands.

He was actively testing her potential.

Clara reached out and selected a yellow pencil from the desk organizer.

Its lead point was incredibly sharp.

Cold numbers absolutely did not lie.

The greedy people recording them certainly did.

For the grueling next seventy-two hours, Clara completely disappeared into the ink.

Damian assigned her a small, elegant desk located right inside the main study.

They worked in almost total silence through the long days and late nights, surrounded constantly by bitter espresso and the scratching of pens moving rapidly over paper.

Clara successfully found the missing money during the very middle of the third night.

It was not cleverly concealed through some highly complicated international shell company.

It appeared very simply as a nonexistent fuel surcharge completely buried inside the shipping records of a trucking route that did not actually exist, mathematically multiplied across three hundred fake deliveries.

Clara placed her final calculations neatly before Damian.

He absolutely did not smile.

He just looked closely at the boldly circled figure.

A tight muscle jumped once in his hard jaw.

Damian lifted the heavy telephone, pressed exactly one button, and spoke softly.

"Bring him in right now."

Clara absolutely did not ask who he meant.

She absolutely did not want to know the terrible answer.

The massive weight of what she had just done finally settled across her shoulders like a protective lead blanket.

She had literally signed a living man’s brutal death sentence using nothing but a Number 2 pencil.

"Go back to your room, Clara."

Damian did not even bother to raise his eyes from the damning paper.

She stood up with slightly unsteady knees and quickly left the dark study.

The massive house felt incredibly suffocating that night.

Clara lay awake inside the large bed and anxiously waited for the sickening impacts to echo from beneath the floorboards.

They surprisingly did not come.

At exactly 3:14 in the morning, her entire world suddenly exploded.

The massive explosion was entirely physical rather than merely metaphorical.

A terrifying concussive force violently passed straight through the massive estate and literally shook Clara’s heavy bedroom door hard against its wooden frame.

The incredibly deep, chest-rattling impact was immediately followed by the horrifying sound of thick glass shattering somewhere near the grand front of the house.

Clara instantly bolted upright in bed.

Her panicked heart struck violently and painfully against her slowly healing ribs.

The main power completely failed and instantly left the large room entirely pitch dark.

Exactly one second later, bright red emergency lights successfully illuminated the floor baseboards and completely covered the bedroom in an eerie, pulsing glow.

Loud sirens instantly began wailing.

They were definitely not standard police sirens.

It was a highly localized, screeching mechanical alarm clearly indicating that the estate's secure perimeter had just been violently breached.

Deafening gunfire quickly followed the blaring alarm.

The rapid stutter of automatic weapons loudly sounded all throughout the marble corridor outside.

Pure, unadulterated animal panic tightly closed right around Clara’s dry throat.

She wildly threw aside the heavy down duvet and quickly placed her bare feet directly on the cold floor.

She honestly had absolutely no idea where she was supposed to go.

Should she hide under the massive bed?

Should she lock herself inside the tile bathroom?

The bedroom door suddenly flew open with incredible violence.

Clara screamed out loud and scrambled rapidly backward across the mattress until the solid wall finally stopped her.

A very large, imposing silhouette completely filled the open doorway beneath the blinking red lights.

"Move right now."

It was Damian.

He wore rugged black tactical trousers and a tight dark T-shirt rather than his usual tailored suit.

A very heavy, matte-black handgun rested easily inside his steady right hand.

His breathing was noticeably hard, but his sharp expression showed absolutely nothing but lethal focus.

He absolutely did not wait for her to process the situation.

Damian aggressively crossed the large room in exactly three long steps, firmly seized Clara’s arm, and forcefully pulled her right toward the door.

His tight hold on her was actually quite painful and completely lacked the controlled, careful gentleness he had previously shown her.

"Damian, what is happening out there—"

"Just be quiet and run."

He forcefully pulled her out into the flashing corridor.

The foul stench of burning drywall and sharp cordite completely filled the dusty air.

White plaster dust fell heavily from the damaged ceiling.

Two armed guards sprinted past them carrying assault rifles directly toward the main foyer.

One of them unfortunately did not reach it.

A massive window overlooking the dark grounds suddenly exploded inward.

Suppressed gunfire erupted from the tree line, and the unfortunate guard fell instantly as a dark pool of blood spread rapidly around his head.

A choked sob caught painfully inside Clara’s tight throat.

Her shaking legs completely stopped working.

Damian swore loudly.

The harsh sound was incredibly guttural and angry.

He tightly closed one muscular arm completely around her waist and practically carried her while sprinting away from the broken windows and much deeper into the core of the house.

They finally reached a heavy steel door expertly concealed flush with the corridor wall.

Damian violently struck a hidden biometric scanner with his bloody palm.

A heavy mechanical lock instantly released.

He forcefully pushed Clara inside the dark space and used his own body weight to force the heavy door completely closed behind them.

The secure panic room was utterly, completely silent.

The jarring contrast with the terrifying violence raging outside was deeply disorienting.

It was a very small, windowless concrete space illuminated solely by a bright battery-powered overhead light.

Heavy assault weapons occupied organized metal racks along one solid wall, and extensive medical supplies fully covered another.

The stale air smelled strongly of filtered oxygen and sharp metallic dust.

Clara instantly collapsed heavily against the cold wall and slid all the way down to the floor.

She pulled her shaking knees tightly toward herself and began breathing entirely too quickly.

She simply could not manage to draw enough air into her lungs.

The horrifying image of the guard’s head violently snapping backward repeated endlessly behind her tightly closed eyes.

"Breathe," Damian ordered sharply.

He stood right at the room’s center, aggressively removed the empty magazine from the handgun, expertly examined the chamber, and slapped a fresh one in with a hard, metallic movement.

His large hands were completely, unnervingly steady.

He was seemingly designed perfectly for horrific circumstances exactly like these.

"They’re going to kill us in here."

Clara gripped her tangled hair in pure panic.

"They are merely an amateur tactical team desperately hired by a dead accountant."

Damian casually placed the loaded weapon down on a small steel table.

"My trained men will completely clear the grounds within five minutes max."

His deep voice remained incredibly flat and calm.

"The local police are heavily paid by me."

"They will conveniently arrive in exactly twenty minutes."

Damian turned his body slightly away from her.

"It is already practically finished."

He placed both of his hands heavily against the edge of the steel table.

That was the exact moment Clara finally saw the fresh blood.

The rear fabric of his black T-shirt was completely torn open.

A massive dark stain spread rapidly over his right shoulder blade and fell in heavy red drops onto the gray concrete floor.

"You’re actively bleeding."

Clara’s blind panic instantly transformed into a cold, focused shock.

Damian casually looked back over his shoulder and regarded the serious injury exactly as though it were just spilled coffee.

"It was just a ricochet from the wooden doorframe."

He experimentally moved his shoulder slightly.

"It completely missed the major artery."

Damian grabbed the lower edge of the bloody shirt and pulled it roughly over his head.

Clara completely stopped breathing.

His bare back was a terrifying map of historical violence.

Thick, jagged white scars crossed the tanned skin: brutal knife injuries, old burns, and several puckered circular marks from old bullets.

He definitely had not been born peacefully into his kingship.

Decades of extreme violence had brutally carved him directly into it.

The brand new wound was a vicious, jagged tear sliced right across the thick shoulder muscle.

It bled relatively slowly but incredibly deeply.

Damian quickly opened a metal container sitting on the medical shelf and pulled out a bottle of iodine and a heavy surgical stapler.

He awkwardly attempted to reach the back injury using only his left hand.

Intense pain visibly tightened all the thick muscles stretched across his broad back.

He simply could not position the plastic bottle properly.

Clara silently watched him struggle in vain.

The incredibly powerful man who effortlessly controlled the entire city and ordered unspeakable violence was actively bleeding out inside a tiny concrete room with absolutely no one beside him.

She stood up completely without consciously deciding to do so.

Her bare feet made absolutely no sound against the concrete.

Clara moved slowly directly behind him.

Damian’s back muscles instantly became rigid as stone.

He prepared himself instinctively for a violent attack from behind.

"Let me do it."

Clara gently removed the iodine bottle right from his tight grip.

Their fingers brushed and briefly touched.

His skin was completely burning up.

Hers was freezing cold.

Damian said absolutely nothing in response.

He simply lowered his muscular arm and willingly allowed her to work.

Clara poured the stinging iodine directly into the open, bleeding wound.

Damian inhaled incredibly sharply and gripped the steel table until the heavy metal literally groaned and moved beneath his white-knuckled hands.

He absolutely did not step away from her.

Clara firmly pressed a thick square of white gauze directly against the torn, bloody muscle.

The sudden physical intimacy was incredibly suffocating.

Her small hands literally held the warm blood inside a known murderer’s body.

His strong heartbeat moved rapidly and incredibly heavily right beneath her pressing palms.

He smelled intensely of hot perspiration, acrid gunpowder, and his signature cologne.

"Why did you bother to come back for me?"

Clara’s shaky voice was barely audible inside the small room.

"I’m really only a cleaner."

She vividly remembered his cruel words from the clinic.

"I am just a defective component."

Damian took a very heavy, rattling breath.

"A complex machine simply cannot function correctly if it carelessly abandons vital pieces of itself."

His voice was incredibly quiet.

It was an absolute lie.

It was merely a cold and highly practical explanation actively concealing the undeniable fact that when the glass shattered, his very first instinct had not been to collect his weapons, his money, or his precious ledgers.

He had run straight to Clara’s room.

She carefully lifted the heavy medical stapler and positioned it directly against the gaping wound.

"This is going to hurt you."

"Just do it."

Clara firmly pulled the mechanical trigger.

The thick metal staple forcefully entered his skin with a sickening, wet impact.

Damian absolutely did not move a single inch.

She fired the stapler again and determinedly continued the process until the badly damaged flesh had been securely drawn back together.

Clara literally rebuilt the damaged monster.

The massive estate smelled strongly of harsh bleach and sharp ozone exactly twelve hours later.

All of the bodies had completely disappeared from the property.

The dangerous broken glass littering the foyer had been meticulously swept away, and heavy wooden boards now completely covered the damaged front windows.

The silent, imposing men had quickly returned to patrol the corridors.

There were exactly twice as many guards as there had been before, and they openly carried much heavier tactical weapons.

Clara stood quietly near the boarded-up living-room window and peered out through the narrow sections of gloomy gray daylight.

She currently wore her old, faded gray T-shirt, which was still sliced straight through the center from Dr. Hayes’s trauma shears, along with her inexpensive, stiff denim jeans.

Maria had thoroughly washed them for her.

They still felt completely wrong against her skin.

They clearly belonged to a pathetic life Clara no longer actually occupied.

Damian approached her location with very slow and slightly uneven steps.

His injured right arm rested securely inside a black medical sling to properly protect the freshly stapled shoulder.

A pristine dark suit jacket had been elegantly draped perfectly over the uninjured side of his body.

He looked completely untouchable once again.

Every single trace of the raw vulnerability displayed inside the panic room had been firmly sealed away behind those cold, dark eyes.

Damian stopped walking several feet away from her.

A very thick manila envelope rested securely inside his good left hand.

He casually tossed it onto the glass coffee table.

It landed with a very heavy, satisfying thud.

"There is exactly fifty thousand dollars in untraceable cash inside that envelope."

His smooth voice held absolutely no trace of emotion.

"There is also a brand-new passport issued under a completely different name, a valid driver’s license, and the keys to a fueled sedan currently parked exactly one mile from this estate."

Damian continued his briefing.

"The trunk of that car contains a full wardrobe of clothing and a completely untraceable disposable telephone."

Clara stared blankly down at the fat envelope.

Her racing heart beat very unevenly against her bruised ribs.

"What exactly is this for?"

"It is your severance package."

Damian looked away toward the ugly wooden boards covering his beautiful windows.

"You successfully found the massive theft buried inside my accounts and definitively proved your extreme usefulness to me."

His strong jaw tightened visibly.

"Your petty debt to me was fully resolved weeks ago."

He finally turned his head to look at her.

"You are merely a civilian."

Damian’s voice remained chillingly controlled.

"The dangerous people who violently attacked this house last night absolutely do not leave loose witnesses behind."

His intense attention moved away from her once again.

"You are currently a massive liability to me, and I am definitely a massive liability to you."

He gestured vaguely toward the front of the massive house.

"The main front door is currently unlocked for you."

His blank expression absolutely did not change.

"Leave."

Damian was actually releasing her.

It was exactly what Clara had desperately prayed for every single night since Ricky forcefully shoved her into the wet pavement.

Total freedom.

Life-changing money.

A completely new, safe identity.

She could easily accept the heavy envelope, drive far away, and absolutely never smell stale blood or cheap whiskey ever again.

She could finally just become normal.

Clara took a slow step toward the glass table.

Her trembling hand completely stopped hovering right above the brown paper.

Then she slowly looked up at Damian.

His jaw remained rigidly locked in place.

He stubbornly would not meet her searching eyes.

He was just silently waiting for her to disappear and completely remove the absolute only element in his highly controlled life that he could not perfectly predict.

Clara closed her eyes for a moment.

She vividly remembered the dark alley, the freezing winter rain, and the complete, utter helplessness of being absolutely nothing.

Outside those secure iron gates, she was just vulnerable prey.

Ruthless men exactly like Ricky could easily break her fragile bones over forty dollars while the entire city simply looked the other way.

Clara opened her eyes again and carefully examined the beautifully silent room.

The grand house’s walls were completely soaked with hidden blood.

Damian was undeniably ruthless, terrifyingly cold, and highly capable of casual killing.

Yet, when deadly bullets violently entered the estate, he absolutely had not placed Clara directly before himself to act as a human shield.

He had physically carried her to safety inside the panic room.

He had willingly allowed her shaking hands to close his torn skin.

Clara absolutely no longer wanted to be helpless prey.

Standing quietly inside the devil’s dark shadow, she suddenly realized she felt completely and utterly safe.

She slowly lowered her hand entirely without ever touching the money envelope.

Then she moved gracefully around the glass table and confidently approached Damian.

He finally looked directly at her.

His dark eyes widened by a tiny fraction of an inch.

For a man like Damian Russo, it was an absolutely extraordinary display of genuine surprise.

"I absolutely don’t want to take another name."

"Clara."

His deep warning was a very low, dangerous rumble.

"If you choose to remain here, you permanently become part of the machine."

He looked directly and intensely into her eyes.

"There is absolutely no exit door once you commit."

His voice hardened like steel.

"You will inevitably witness terrible things that will completely damage your soul."

"You will eventually become fully complicit in my world."

"I know."

Clara gently placed her pale hand directly against the dark fabric of his sling, resting it directly over his beating heart.

She clearly felt its powerful, steady rhythm thumping right beneath her palm.

It perfectly matched her own racing pulse.

"I actually like the ink."

Her voice remained incredibly steady and sure.

"I really like finding the hidden cracks."

Clara bravely raised her face toward him.

"You desperately need someone to closely examine the numbers for you."

She did not look away from his gaze.

"You absolutely need someone who intimately understands exactly how gutter rats operate."

Damian quietly studied her face.

The heavy silence between them became an almost physical weight.

He actively searched her face for lingering fear, natural hesitation, or any trace of the naïve, terrified woman he had forcefully removed from the freezing rain.

That weak woman absolutely no longer existed.

She had tragically died inside that bloody alley.

The strong woman standing before him had been entirely forged inside the cold, sterile rooms of his own estate.

Very slowly, Damian raised his uninjured left hand.

He did not gently touch her bruised cheek.

His long, strong fingers closed firmly around the delicate back of her neck.

The physical hold was incredibly firm, deeply possessive, and completely absolute.

"If you choose to remain," he stated, "you will belong to me completely."

Clara absolutely did not try to move away.

She willingly leaned right into the warm, heavy weight of his dominant hand.

"I know."

Damian roughly pulled her tight against his broad chest.

The scent of sharp ozone, highly expensive cologne, and immense dark power completely surrounded her.

Outside the mansion, heavy rain finally began striking the thick wooden boards.

May you like

Clara absolutely did not feel the biting cold anymore.

She peacefully closed her eyes, feeling completely, utterly safe trapped inside the beautiful darkness.
