Chapter 1 - The taste of blood reminded her of old pennies and deep regret.

Clara choked down a mouthful of it while her cheek remained plastered against the slick asphalt.
Freezing rain swept dirty grime straight into the fresh cuts on her skin, igniting a bright, sharp sting.
Hovering over her, Ricky hoisted his heavy boot for another strike.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut and curled into a tighter ball, bracing for the inevitable splintering of her ribs.
Instead, a suffocating silence suddenly draped over the dark alley.
The smooth purr of a luxury engine vibrated close by.
A heavy door slammed shut, and a voice utterly devoid of pity sliced through the shadows.
"Bring her to me."
The narrow alley behind Coda always carried the stench of decaying citrus and flat beer.
Tonight, the relentless rain amplified the foul undertones of slick motor oil and raw sewage.
Clara kept her eyes tightly shut, locking her forearms defensively over her ears.
She was violently trembling, though she could not determine if it was from the bitter November chill or the massive shock coursing through her system.
Ricky wheezed heavily just above her battered frame.
He was severely out of shape, acting as a mid-level enforcer who spent far more hours drinking at the bar than actually collecting debts on the streets.
However, he possessed brutal weight, and his steel-toed boots were highly effective.
"Stupid bitch," Ricky panted, his nasty voice carrying a careless, drunken slur.
"You think you can hold out on the register?"
"You think I don’t count the drops?"
Clara completely refused to answer him.
There was absolutely no point.
The forty dollars she had stolen to keep her apartment's electricity connected was long gone, spent three days prior.
If she dared to open her mouth, Ricky would gladly kick her teeth down her throat.
Surviving inside the city's gutters meant perfectly understanding when to play dead.
She tucked her bruised chin firmly against her chest.
A vicious kick slammed directly into her thigh.
Blinding pain radiated outward from the dull, sickening impact, sending a wave of nausea straight up her throat.
Clara bit down hard on her own tongue to prevent herself from crying out loud.
Crying only ever made Ricky significantly angrier.
It made the man feel like a brutal monster, and Ricky absolutely despised feeling like a monster.
He vastly preferred to imagine himself as a legitimate businessman simply making a necessary point.
"Look at me."
He grabbed a brutal fistful of her soaked, tangled hair and violently yanked her head backward.
A jagged, pained gasp tore from her lips.
The flickering streetlights at the far end of the alley looked like hazy orange halos through the pouring rain.
Ricky’s cruel face remained hidden by the shadows, but Clara could easily smell him.
He reeked of cheap aerosol deodorant and bottom-shelf whiskey.
Then a sudden noise interrupted the brutal beating.
The heavy steel door leading directly from the club’s VIP exit swung open with a rusty, metallic groan.
Ricky froze in place.
His tight grip on Clara’s soaked hair loosened just a fraction.
She weakly lowered her gaze toward the murky puddle pooling near her scraped knees.
Her fresh blood drifted through the filthy water like a pale-pink ribbon.
Four tall men stepped out into the freezing rain.
Clara was unable to see any of their faces.
She could only see their expensive shoes.
They wore polished leather footwear that absolutely did not belong inside a filthy alley like this one.
The men did not rush to escape the harsh storm.
They walked with a slow, deliberate arrogance, looking entirely unconcerned by the terrible weather.
A large black umbrella opened with a sharp, echoing canvas snap.
Ricky immediately dropped Clara’s hair.
Her chin hit the hard pavement and scraped harshly against the asphalt, but she remained completely motionless.
She tightly held her breath in her lungs.
"Mr. Russo."
Ricky’s liquor-fueled confidence evaporated in a single instant.
His voice suddenly became incredibly thin and distinctly frightened.
"I didn’t know you were going to be using the back entrance tonight."
The imposing man standing beneath the umbrella offered no verbal response.
He simply stopped walking.
The tense silence quickly became suffocating, broken solely by heavy rain drumming against the metal garbage containers.
Clara remained totally paralyzed on the wet ground.
She definitely recognized the name Russo.
Absolutely everyone working inside the nightclub, whether legally or illegally, knew that dangerous name.
Damian Russo personally owned the entire building.
He essentially owned the surrounding city block.
He practically owned the police precinct located two streets away.
Damian took a slow step closer to them.
The dark umbrella tilted just enough to reveal an expensive charcoal cashmere coat.
Clara kept her terrified attention firmly glued to his polished shoes.
They remained absolutely pristine despite the puddles.
"Ricky."
Damian did not bother to raise his deep voice.
His tone was quiet and casually conversational, which made it completely terrifying.
It sounded exactly like a powerful engine idling right before a deadly race.
"She was actively skimming from the till, boss."
Ricky hurried to offer a pathetic explanation.
His heavy boots shuffled very nervously against the slick, wet pavement.
"I was just teaching her the rules of the house."
"You know exactly how it is in this business."
"We really can’t let the dirty rats become too bold."
Clara mentally braced her aching body.
She fully expected Damian to nod his head, step right over her bleeding form, enter his waiting luxury vehicle, and simply leave.
Why on earth would a man like him care?
She was merely a lowly cleaner.
She was an absolute nobody.
She was nothing but a minor rounding error inside his vast and incredibly bloody ledger.
Damian never even glanced at Ricky.
Clara physically felt his intense attention lower toward her trembling body trapped in the puddle.
His look held absolutely no compassion.
It felt much more like a cold business appraisal.
He coldly examined her exactly like a piece of damaged machinery, mentally calculating the cost of repair against the cheaper cost of disposal.
Her bruised ribs throbbed mercilessly.
Her bottom lip was split wide open, and sticky, warm blood collected heavily against her chin.
She already knew that she looked utterly pathetic.
Clara bravely met Damian’s dark gaze for less than one full second.
She saw deep, entirely unreadable eyes positioned beneath a sharp, aristocratic brow before quickly looking away in pure fear and burning shame.
"You are making a terrible mess," Damian noted flatly.
"I’ll clean it all up, boss."
"I swear to God."
"I was only just finishing up—"
"No."
That single, icy syllable hung suspended inside the freezing air.
Damian smoothly turned his body toward the sleek black sedan idling near the alley’s entrance.
The umbrella moved perfectly in sync with him, keeping his broad shoulders protected from the storm.
A silent guard quickly pulled open the heavy rear door.
Ricky exhaled a very unsteady breath, apparently foolish enough to believe the violent matter had concluded.
He immediately bent down and grabbed Clara violently by the frayed collar of her soaking wet jacket.
"All right, get your ass up."
"You’re incredibly fortunate he—"
Damian suddenly stopped right beside the open vehicle door.
He looked back over his cashmere-clad shoulder.
The falling rain almost seemed to magically pass right around him.
"Bring her to me."
Ricky froze in absolute shock.
"Boss?"
Damian absolutely refused to repeat himself.
He gracefully entered the luxury sedan, and the armored door closed shut with a heavy, deeply muted sound.
The massive guard who had previously carried the umbrella took a menacing step forward.
He possessed a tree-trunk neck and a brutally flattened nose.
He forcefully shoved Ricky backward using only an open hand.
It was not even a proper punch, but Ricky struck the alley's brick wall hard enough to completely lose his breath.
"Move away from her," the guard demanded.
Before Clara could even comprehend what was currently happening, extremely calloused hands seized her tightly beneath her arms.
She screamed in agony as her fractured ribs violently protested the movement.
Clara desperately attempted to struggle, but it amounted to nothing more than a weak thrashing of highly battered limbs.
"Stop moving right now or I will drop you."
The massive guard effortlessly pulled her completely upright.
Her bruised legs instantly failed to support her dead weight.
The entire world rapidly revolved in dizzying circles of yellow streetlights and inky black shadows.
He practically dragged her across the wet asphalt while the ends of her worn shoes scraped loudly against the ground.
Blind panic finally managed to overwhelm her physical pain.
Ricky was a dangerous man, but people who were taken inside armored Russo vehicles absolutely never returned.
They ended up dumped in freezing rivers.
They completely disappeared inside toxic city landfills.
"Please."
The desperate word bubbled through the thick blood pooling inside her mouth.
"Please, I swear I didn’t see a single thing."
"I won’t say anything to anyone."
The stoic guard entirely ignored her pleas.
He yanked open the rear door of a massive SUV parked directly behind Damian’s sedan and shoved her inside.
Clara collapsed heavily onto the floorboard as a pathetic mass of soaked clothing, injured limbs, and pure terror.
The heavy door slammed closed.
The environmental contrast felt incredibly violent.
Mere seconds earlier, Clara had been lying helplessly inside the freezing rain, surrounded by rotting garbage and vehicle exhaust.
Now the air around her was wonderfully warm and perfectly climate-controlled.
Invisible floor vents steadily released heat that carried the rich scent of treated leather and expensive pine cologne.
It was entirely too quiet inside the cabin.
Extra-thick doors and heavily tinted windows reduced the raging storm outside to a barely noticeable hum.
Clara remained tightly curled on the floorboard, completely afraid to move a single muscle.
The pristine floor carpet pressing against her cheek was significantly softer than the cheap mattress inside her own apartment.
She was quickly ruining it with filthy rainwater, fresh blood, and disgusting alley grime.
The large SUV smoothly began moving forward.
"Get your body off the floor."
The stern voice originated from the passenger seat located just above her.
It clearly did not belong to the silent guard who had tossed her inside.
An older man sporting silver hair at his temples watched her intently through the rearview mirror from his spot in the front passenger seat.
Clara swallowed hard and instantly tasted sharp copper.
Extremely slowly and incredibly painfully, she forced her battered body upward.
Every single strained muscle in her aching back immediately seized.
She awkwardly pulled herself up onto the spacious rear seat, and her soaking wet clothes squeaked against the pristine cream-colored leather.
A completely absurd pang of deep guilt suddenly entered her mind.
She was actively destroying the flawless interior of a vehicle that was undoubtedly worth far more than her own life.
Clara firmly pressed herself deep into the corner beside the locked door and pulled her bruised knees tight against her chest.
She shivered so incredibly violently that her teeth audibly struck against each other.
"Please try not to bleed all over the expensive seats," the older man instructed.
His calm tone was highly practical rather than overtly angry.
He casually tossed a perfectly folded white handkerchief directly over the center console.
It landed softly on the leather right beside her hip.
Clara just stared blankly at it.
The high-quality cotton was incredibly thick and blindingly white.
Her dirty fingers shook entirely too badly to manage lifting it cleanly.
She clumsily pressed the soft cloth against her badly split lip.
Her warm blood immediately dyed the pristine cloth a bright, horrifying red.
City neon lights rapidly blurred past the tinted windows.
The powerful vehicle was moving very quickly away from the crowded club district.
Where exactly were these men taking her?
Were they heading toward the deserted docks?
Were they driving to an abandoned warehouse?
Clara nervously examined the silent driver’s closely shaved head and massively thick neck.
The older passenger completely ignored her, opting to continue typing a message on his illuminated cell telephone.
He treated her as if she were completely invisible.
She was nothing more than disposable cargo.
"Where?"
Her raspy voice sounded completely broken.
She attempted to clear her throat but coughed violently when a sharp pain radiated through her battered chest.
"Where exactly are we going tonight?"
The older man didn't even bother to turn his head.
"We are heading to Mr. Russo’s private estate."
Those terrifying words dropped into Clara’s churning stomach exactly like heavy lead weights.
A billionaire's private estate was definitely not a common dumping place for a corpse.
It was actually something far worse.
If they were actively bringing her to Damian Russo's personal home, it meant the man wanted something specific from her.
Clara possessed absolutely nothing of value.
She was twenty-four years old, completely buried beneath crushing medical debt from her late mother’s final, agonizing illness, and currently working off the books while scrubbing vomit from the sticky floors of a mafia-controlled nightclub.
She literally only owned three faded pairs of jeans and one very sad, dying houseplant.
"I swear I don’t have any money to give him," Clara stammered.
Cold panic aggressively began rising in her chest all over again.
"The forty dollars from the register—I admit that I took it."
She breathed incredibly carefully to manage the searing pain in her side.
"I can absolutely work it off for him."
"I’ll happily work double shifts every single week."
"I’ll gladly clean his filthy floors using only a toothbrush."
"Please, just let me go."
The older man released a heavy sigh and finally turned his head to look at her.
His calculating eyes were a pale, icy shade of blue and completely devoid of warmth.
"Be quiet," he commanded smoothly.
It was definitely not phrased like a violent threat, but it effortlessly carried the exact same terrifying force.
Clara instantly clamped her mouth shut and pressed the blood-soaked handkerchief much more firmly against her ruined lip.
She desperately forced her shaking body to take very shallow, highly measured breaths.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Do not allow yourself to hyperventilate inside this car.
Do not give these dangerous men a single excuse to drug you or strike you again.
The tense journey continued in total silence.
The bright city lights gradually thinned out and were quickly replaced by towering dark trees and heavy iron security fences.
The bizarre contradiction of her current circumstances heavily occupied Clara’s racing mind.
She fully believed that she was going to be murdered that very night.
Yet, at the exact same time, the luxurious heated seat wonderfully soothed her deeply injured back, and the blowing warm air slowly dried her soaked clothing.
It was honestly the most physically comfortable she had felt in several grueling months.
The unexpected physical comfort felt exactly like a very cruel, sick joke.
The massive SUV finally slowed its pace and executed a sharp turn.
Clara peered cautiously through the tinted window glass.
Enormous high iron security gates opened entirely automatically onto a long, winding asphalt driveway perfectly bordered by manicured privacy hedges.
A truly massive building stood formidably at the very end of the long path.
It was absolutely not some ancient, classical mansion lavishly decorated with marble columns and stone statues.
It was an imposing modern fortress constructed entirely from poured concrete, reinforced steel, and dark, impenetrable glass, seemingly built directly into the steep hillside.
It appeared incredibly cold, highly impenetrable, and completely unforgiving.
The luxury vehicle rolled to a smooth stop directly beneath a very broad architectural portico.
"Get out," the driver ordered gruffly.
Clara certainly did not wait for them to forcefully drag her out.
Her shaking, freezing wet fingers fumbled awkwardly with the chrome latch before the heavy door finally swung open.
She stepped out onto the perfectly smooth concrete and nearly collapsed on the spot.
The biting cold air violently struck her battered body all over again.
The older passenger had already exited the SUV.
He casually pointed toward a heavy steel side door.
"Head inside now."
"Follow the main corridor straight down."
"Take the very first door located on your left."
Clara nodded her head in mute compliance.
It was only at that exact moment she finally realized she was completely missing her shoes.
They had most likely been ripped off and lost inside the muddy alley during the initial struggle.
Her soaking wet socks slapped softly against the pristine concrete as she limped painfully toward the grand entrance.
The heavy steel door was surprisingly unlocked.
She pulled it open and cautiously stepped inside Damian Russo’s terrifying, private world.
The designated room was certainly not a dark, bloodstained dungeon.
May you like
It was actually a state-of-the-art medical clinic.
Bright fluorescent lights projected a sterile, completely shadowless glare across the calming, pale blue walls.
