Chapter 3 - Her severely swollen lip pulsed painfully in perfect rhythm with her heartbeat.

Clara remained absolutely still for ten full minutes and hopelessly attempted to somehow persuade her broken body to move again.
Eventually, she carefully rolled over onto her right side and slowly pushed herself into an upright position.
The oversized black Henley shirt slipped lazily from one bare shoulder.
She scooted awkwardly to the very edge of the tall bed and slowly lowered her bare feet deep into the plush carpet.
A very quiet mechanical click instantly disturbed the room's silence.
Clara snapped her head toward the door.
The brass handle slowly turned.
It was currently unlocked.
However, no one actually entered the room.
The door remained cracked slightly open, serving as either a silent invitation or a devious trap.
Her aching bladder ultimately forced her to take action.
Clara limped miserably into the attached bathroom, which was a vast expanse of dark slate tile and seamless glass, and gratefully washed her face with freezing cold water.
The horrifying woman staring back from inside the mirror strongly resembled a fresh corpse.
Dark purple and sickly yellow bruising completely covered her entire left cheek.
A stark white medical dressing crossed directly over her badly split lip.
Deep, bruised shadows heavily surrounded her sunken, exhausted brown eyes.
Clara dried her wet face with a fluffy towel that was actually thicker than her winter coat.
She desperately needed to leave this room.
She absolutely needed to find all the building's exits.
Clara cautiously opened the bedroom door and stepped out into the main corridor.
Bright daylight completely changed the entire atmosphere of the house.
The dark, polished floors beautifully reflected the natural light.
The profound silence was slightly less oppressive now, softly interrupted by the distant hum of the central air system and the very faint, delicate movement of fine porcelain.
Clara slowly followed the faint sound while keeping her back pressed firmly near the wall and keeping her bare feet entirely silent.
The long corridor eventually opened into an absolutely enormous open-concept living space.
Massive glass walls brilliantly overlooked highly manicured grounds that ended abruptly at a thick line of dense trees positioned beneath a brittle, crystal blue sky.
To her immediate right stood a breathtaking kitchen constructed entirely of black marble, brushed stainless steel, and ultra-minimalist cabinetry.
Damian sat casually at the massive central island.
He currently wore a perfectly tailored dark-gray suit entirely without its matching jacket or tie.
His crisp shirt sleeves had been neatly rolled back to expose his muscular forearms.
A delicate white coffee cup rested easily inside one hand while his other hand moved swiftly across a digital tablet.
Clara stopped completely dead in her tracks.
She strongly considered immediately retreating back down the hall.
Damian glanced up immediately and instantly caught her slight movement.
He absolutely did not smile or act startled by her presence.
He calmly placed the ceramic cup down onto its matching saucer.
The small, sharp clink struck the quiet room exactly like a fired gunshot.
"Sit down."
Clara’s terrified body obeyed the command long before her rational thoughts even could.
She awkwardly moved toward the kitchen island while keeping both arms tightly protecting her fractured ribs.
She carefully selected a tall leather bar stool and remained perched nervously right on its very edge, actively preserving as much physical space as the wide counter realistically allowed.
His hot coffee smelled incredibly rich and wonderfully bitter.
The strong scent of cedar wood and something sharp, almost exactly like ozone, completely surrounded Damian.
He casually slid a small plate across the smooth marble surface.
It contained two pieces of plain dry toast and a small bowl of freshly cut fruit.
"Eat this."
His intense attention immediately returned directly to the glowing tablet.
Clara stared blankly down at the offered food.
Lingering fear and burning stomach acid had completely twisted her insides into a tight knot.
"I am honestly not hungry at all."
"I certainly did not bother to ask whether you were currently hungry."
Damian’s firm tone held absolutely no trace of human emotion.
"Your fragile body suffered massive physical trauma last night."
"It desperately requires proper fuel to heal."
His dark eyes remained glued to the digital screen.
"Eat the dry toast."
Clara shakily lifted one piece of the bread.
Her weak hand shook so badly that it actually tapped the toast loudly against the ceramic plate.
She took a very small, hesitant bite.
It tasted exactly like dry sawdust in her mouth.
Clara forcefully made herself swallow it down.
"Why was my bedroom door securely locked last night?"
The bold question simply escaped her mouth before she could manage to stop it.
Damian turned his head very slowly.
His blank eyes revealed absolutely nothing.
"I did it because a heavily concussed and completely panicked woman blindly wandering around my private residence during the night is a massive security liability."
He spoke clearly, sounding exactly as though he were just explaining a totally ordinary household procedure.
"You inevitably would have accidentally activated the internal security system, and my armed men very well might have shot you dead."
Clara swallowed very hard.
"I just want to go back to my home."
"You absolutely do not have a home anymore."
Damian casually moved a long finger across the tablet screen.
"You currently rent a filthy basement apartment located deep inside the Narrows."
His voice remained incredibly smooth and calm.
"You are exactly two full months completely behind on the rent."
"Your angry landlord officially began legal eviction proceedings just yesterday afternoon."
All color instantly fled from Clara’s face.
"How could you possibly know that?"
"I know absolutely everything currently occurring inside my city."
He looked directly into her shocked eyes.
"Especially when it directly concerns something that currently belongs to me."
"I absolutely do not belong to you."
The defiant words trembled slightly on her lips but they carried a very sudden, fierce flare of deep defiance.
Damian calmly put down the digital tablet.
He leaned aggressively forward, placing both of his muscular forearms flat against the cool marble.
The air in the kitchen suddenly became incredibly thick.
He was leaning close enough for Clara to easily see his individual dark eyelashes and the exact, jagged line of the pale scar crossing right through his eyebrow.
"Let me explain this situation to you incredibly clearly."
His voice dropped to a dangerous quiet.
"Last night, Ricky viciously fractured your rib simply because of forty measly dollars."
Damian absolutely did not blink once.
"He bravely did it because, outside the walls of this house, you are absolutely nothing to anyone."
Clara remained frozen in place.
"You have no personal money, no powerful family, and absolutely no protection."
His intense eyes held hers completely captive.
"Outside these doors, you are just vulnerable prey."
Damian slowly extended one large hand forward.
Clara instantly moved her body backward out of pure instinct.
He only tapped his index finger very slowly and deliberately against the marble counter.
"Inside this specific house, you are living safely under my personal roof."
Tap.
"You currently wear my clothing."
Tap.
"You eat my purchased food."
Tap.
"You freely breathe my filtered air."
The rhythmic tapping finally stopped.
"Ricky’s massive, fatal mistake was treating something of mine without proper respect."
Damian’s voice lowered even further.
"He will definitely learn from that specific mistake today."
His dark gaze hardened into stone.
"Do not dare mistake my territorial claim for some kind of sweet charity."
"You are sitting here simply because I currently require it."
He gracefully lifted his coffee cup again.
"When that specific requirement finally ends, you will definitely know about it."
Clara stared helplessly at the complete lack of human feeling displayed inside his sharp face.
Damian was definitely not driven by uncontrolled, messy rage or some sadistic pleasure found in suffering.
He was driven solely by absolute, unquestionable control.
"What exactly do you want from me?"
The desperate question left her raw throat very unevenly.
Damian calmly drank his hot coffee.
"For right now, I just want you to finish eating the toast."
The rest of the long morning quickly became an agonizing state of complete uncertainty.
The bedroom door was certainly not locked again, but Clara very quickly understood that she firmly remained a captive prisoner.
Silent, imposing men wearing impeccably tailored dark suits heavily occupied every single major corridor in the house.
They absolutely did not speak to her or even openly watch her movements.
Their mere physical presence easily created an impenetrable physical barrier.
Clara was allowed to enter the sleek kitchen, the massive living room, and the specific corridor leading directly back to her bedroom.
That was the absolute, hard limit of her entire new world.
She sat quietly on a luxurious slate-gray velvet sofa and looked blankly through the reinforced glass walls toward the distant trees.
Dr. Hayes’s strong medication finally began wearing off completely, and a hot, agonizing pulse fully returned to her fractured ribs.
Clara firmly pressed a soft throw pillow directly against her aching chest to help counter the rising pain.
Right near noon, the entire atmosphere of the house drastically changed.
At very first, there was no easily identifiable sound to point to.
The armed men stationed out in the corridors simply straightened their postures.
Bursts of radio static came very faintly from the direction of the main entrance.
Clara sat up slightly higher on the couch and reacted nervously to the sudden movement.
A massive black SUV quickly entered the long driveway located just beyond the glass wall.
It was definitely not the exact same pristine vehicle used the previous night.
This specific one was much older, completely covered in dried mud, and entirely lacked the highly polished appearance of Damian’s regular luxury fleet.
Two large men quickly hopped out from the front seats.
They aggressively yanked open the heavy rear door and violently pulled Ricky outside by his arms.
Clara completely stopped breathing.
Her knuckles tightened painfully around the velvet pillow.
Ricky’s clothing was completely soaking wet and heavily covered in filthy mud.
His head moved very loosely against his broad shoulders, and his swollen face was nearly unrecognizable beneath layers of brutal bruising.
One of his eyes had swollen completely, grotesquely closed.
He absolutely did not try to resist them.
The men brutally dragged his limp body toward a hidden side entrance until he completely disappeared from Clara’s limited view.
Cold panic aggressively entered her trembling body.
She stood up way too quickly, completely ignored the screaming pain from her fractured rib, and quickly moved away from the large windows.
Clara desperately pressed herself deep into the dark corner located near a massive stone fireplace and hopelessly attempted to simply disappear.
Ten agonizing minutes slowly passed.
The suffocating silence returned much more heavily than before.
Then she finally heard something coming from down below.
The fortress house was perfectly insulated against the noisy world outside, but definitely not against itself.
A very wet, heavy, sickening impact traveled faintly but clearly through the solid concrete and wood.
Then came a very sharp, incredibly helpless sound of pain.
Clara immediately slapped a hand over her own mouth.
She quickly lowered herself down onto the hard floor and pulled her shaking knees tightly against her body.
Another brutal impact closely followed.
A muffled, agonizing shout echoed up through the floorboards.
It absolutely did not resemble cinematic violence seen inside an action film.
There were no dramatic speeches or swelling background music.
There was only the terribly ugly, wet sound of flesh violently striking flesh.
It sounded highly methodical and completely unhurried.
It sounded exactly like a day of hard work.
Clara squeezed her eyes tightly shut, but the sheer darkness only served to sharpen her sensitive hearing.
She vividly remembered Ricky’s heavy boot viciously entering her side and the disgusting smell of his whiskey-covered skin hovering over her.
She absolutely hated him.
Lying bleeding inside the alley, she had genuinely wanted him to be dead.
Hearing a man being methodically dismantled piece by piece right beneath the pristine house was completely different.
It sounded exactly like a wrathful god brutally punishing total disbelief.
The terrible violence finally stopped after ten agonizing minutes.
The profound silence that descended afterward was honestly much worse.
Clara remained huddled on the floor and shook violently.
She absolutely did not know how much time slowly passed by.
The bright sun moved steadily across the large room and created very long, dark shadows on the floor.
Measured, confident footsteps approached her corner.
Clara slowly opened her terrified eyes.
Damian calmly entered the living room.
His tailored suit jacket was completely gone now.
The crisp white shirt remained perfectly clean, with both sharp cuffs rolled evenly up his forearms.
He appeared exactly the same as he had during breakfast.
Completely calm.
Totally untouched.
Except for exactly one tiny detail.
A very small red mark rested innocently on his right cuff right near the wrist.
It was a single, undeniable point of incredibly fresh blood.
Damian smoothly followed Clara’s terrified stare and calmly examined the red spot.
He absolutely did not try to hide it or react with any sort of disgust.
He simply unrolled the crisp sleeve and casually fastened the button directly over the stain.
"Stand up."
His voice was perfectly quiet.
Clara’s bruised legs felt incredibly unstable, but his sheer authority effortlessly pulled her upright.
She remained pressed tightly against the stone fireplace with both arms wrapped defensively around herself.
"Your previous debt is now completely cleared."
Damian spoke exactly as though they were merely discussing an ordinary accounting discrepancy.
"The forty dollars, the blatant insubordination, and the unfortunate incident inside my alley have now been fully balanced out."
Clara just stared at him.
Her battered chest heaved rapidly.
"Is he—"
She physically could not manage to complete the horrifying question.
"Ricky is absolutely no longer employed here."
Damian casually entered her personal space.
His expensive cologne perfectly concealed every single trace of the recent violence.
"He was a highly defective component located inside a very expensive machine."
His dark eyes firmly held hers.
"I simply replaced him."
Damian slowly raised his hand toward her face.
Clara was far too frightened to even move a muscle.
He gently tucked a loose strand of hair securely behind her ear.
His long fingers were incredibly warm, perfectly steady, and totally dry.
"Do you fully understand exactly what happens to defective components?"
"Yes."
A single, hot tear moved slowly down Clara’s heavily bruised cheek.
Damian effortlessly caught it with his thumb right before it ever reached her jawline.
He wiped it away with a gentle and completely terrifying precision.
"Good."
His deep voice was almost a soft murmur.
"You are fully a part of this machine now."
His intense eyes remained locked on hers.
"I demand absolute perfection from my property."
The healing process was both ugly and highly uncomfortable.
During the grueling next three weeks, the deep-purple bruising painted across Clara’s ribs slowly faded into sickly shades of yellow and green.
The badly split lip fully healed into a very thin white scar that pulled painfully whenever she tried to drink.
Clara absolutely did not leave the vast estate.
She did not even attempt to do it.
The silent, armed men remained constantly in the corridors and effectively created a constant, heavy pressure resting at the very base of her skull.
Maria finally brought her proper clothing on the fourth day.
They were definitely not elegant gowns or delicate lingerie.
They were essentially expensive armor: high-waisted tailored wool trousers, heavy silk blouses securely fastening near the collarbone, and thick cashmere sweaters in muted shades of slate, navy, and black.
Every single piece fit her body absolutely perfectly.
Damian had never once bothered to ask her size.
Either he somehow already knew it or he had simply instructed someone to quickly determine it.
The complete lack of personal privacy frightened Clara, but the smooth silk felt incredibly cool against her highly damaged body.
Absolutely no one instructed her to clean rooms or cook meals.
She essentially existed in a state of suspension, quietly moving through the massive library or simply sitting beside the reinforced windows while autumn leaves slowly decayed into brown material scattered across the manicured grounds.
On a particularly rainy Tuesday morning, a stoic guard finally addressed her directly.
"The boss wants to see you inside the study."
Clara’s stomach instantly tightened into a knot.
She had absolutely not spoken a single word with Damian since that terrifying day in the living room.
She only occasionally saw him moving swiftly through the corridors or heard his deep voice echoing behind mahogany doors, but he completely ignored her presence.
The massive machine simply continued operating while Clara anxiously waited to finally learn where exactly she would be permanently placed.
The armed guard escorted her strictly through a private corridor she had not previously been permitted to enter.
The air in this wing smelled heavily of old paper, rich leather, and sharp gun oil rather than the usual beeswax.
He pushed open heavy double doors and silently indicated that she should enter the room alone.
Damian’s private study was a massive cavern constructed of dark oak with towering bookshelves reaching all the way to the high ceiling.
A massive, imposing desk stood right in its center, buried beneath highly organized stacks of manila folders and thick leather ledgers.
Damian sat casually behind it wearing a dark black shirt with its sleeves rolled back.
He was currently reading paperwork through a pair of silver wire-framed glasses.
They actually made him appear brutally, dangerously intelligent.
He did not even bother to look up at her.
"Sit down."
Clara slowly lowered herself into the plush leather chair positioned directly opposite him.
It sighed softly beneath her slight weight.
She neatly folded both hands in her lap and nervously pressed her fingernails deep into her palms.
Damian calmly finished reading the page, signed the official document with a heavy gold fountain pen, and slid it neatly aside.
He then removed the silver glasses and tiredly rubbed the bridge of his nose.
He actually looked quite tired.
It was the very first sign of ordinary human weakness Clara had ever seen in the man.
"You actively stole forty dollars directly from the Coda register."
It was stated as a fact, not a question.
"Yes."
Clara’s mouth instantly became incredibly dry.
"My assigned floor supervisors strictly balance those specific registers twice every single night."
Damian casually leaned backward in his chair.
"They meticulously compare the raw cash directly against digital pour controls installed on every single liquor bottle."
His sharp expression remained highly analytical.
"If any bartender accidentally overpours by even zero point two five ounces, the software system instantly identifies it."
Damian thoughtfully steepled his long fingers together.

"Please explain exactly how a simple cleaner completely lacking a high-school diploma successfully bypassed a thirty-thousand-dollar sales-security system and quietly removed forty dollars without activating a single automated warning."
Clara swallowed very hard.
