Chapter 9 - He Came Home With Nothing but a Paper Bag and a PromiseLeo Moretti was released on a Tuesday morning.

No limousine waited.

No convoy.

No armed men.

Chloe stood beside her car wearing jeans and a cream sweater.

Dominic, now almost two, sat on her hip.

The gates opened.

Leo walked out carrying a paper bag.

For a moment, Chloe did not recognize him.

He was leaner.

His hair was slightly longer.

There was gray at his temples that had not been there before.

He stopped.

Dominic stared at him.

Leo’s face changed.

“Hey, little man.”

Dominic buried his face in Chloe’s shoulder.

Leo’s smile faltered.

Of all the punishments prison had given him, that one hurt most.

Chloe crouched.

“Dominic.”

The boy peeked.

“Who is that?”

He looked at Leo.

“Daddy.”

Leo exhaled.

Dominic reached.

Leo dropped the paper bag.

Chloe handed him their son.

Dominic touched Leo’s face.

Then grabbed his nose.

Leo laughed.

Chloe’s chest tightened.

They drove to Brooklyn.

Leo stared through the window.

The city had continued without him.

Buildings changed.

Businesses changed.

People changed.

His old empire belonged to history.

When they reached the brownstone, Leo stood outside.

“This is home?”

“This is my home.”

He looked at her.

Chloe held his gaze.

“If you want it to become yours, you earn that.”

Leo nodded.

“Fair.”

The first months were difficult.

Leo did not know how to live without command.

He woke at four.

Checked windows.

Memorized neighbors’ vehicles.

Once, Chloe discovered three security cameras he had installed without telling her.

She made him remove them.

He did.

That surprised both of them.

He went to therapy.

He hated it.

He went anyway.

He learned to cook exactly four meals.

Three were pasta.

One was eggs.

Dominic considered him the greatest chef alive.

Leo took a legitimate position on the board of Moretti Logistics.

No secret accounts.

No collections.

No armed meetings.

For the first time, he earned money that did not carry invisible blood.

Then one evening, almost a year after his release, Chloe came home exhausted.

The bakery had been overwhelmed.

A supplier had failed.

Two employees had called out.

She opened the door.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Leo?”

No answer.

She walked into the kitchen.

Candles.

Flowers.

Dominic sat in his high chair wearing a tiny suit.

Chloe stopped.

“What is this?”

Leo entered.

He wore the dark suit she loved.

But he looked nervous.

Actually nervous.

Chloe began smiling.

“No.”

His eyebrows rose.

“I haven’t asked anything.”

“I know what you’re doing.”

“Then allow me to do it.”

Dominic banged a spoon.

Leo walked toward her.

He did not kneel immediately.

Instead, he took both her hands.

“The first time you came to me, you were afraid.”

Chloe’s smile faded.

“You offered yourself to save your brother.”

“I remember.”

“I accepted because I was the kind of man who believed everything had a price.”

His thumb moved over her knuckles.

“You gave me a son.”

He looked at Dominic.

“You gave me a reason to leave a life I thought I could never escape.”

Then back at her.

“But I don’t want you because you gave me Dominic.”

Chloe’s eyes burned.

“I want you because you are the only person who looked at everything ugly in me and still demanded something better.”

Leo lowered himself onto one knee.

Dominic gasped as though witnessing the most exciting event of his life.

Leo opened a small box.

The ring was elegant.

Simple.

Nothing like the enormous diamonds Chloe had expected from the old Leo.

“I owned half a city and had nothing.”

His voice roughened.

“Now I own considerably less.”

Chloe laughed through tears.

“And I have everything.”

He looked up.

“Chloe Bennett, will you marry me?”

She stared at him.

Then at Dominic.

Then at the home they had built.

The answer was obvious.

But Chloe had learned something important.

Love was not surrender.

It was choice.

And this time, unlike the night in the casino, the choice belonged entirely to her.

“Yes.”

Leo stood.

She kissed him before he could place the ring on her finger.

Dominic shouted.

“Again!”

They laughed against each other’s mouths.

Leo finally slipped the ring onto her hand.

Chloe looked down at it.

“Leo?”

“Yes?”

“If you ever tell anyone I cried, I’ll deny it.”

“I have witnesses.”

They looked at Dominic.

He was chewing his spoon.

“Unreliable witness.”

“Agreed.”

Leo pulled Chloe against him.

For once, there was no danger waiting outside.

No enemy.

No debt.

No bargain.

May you like

Only tomorrow.

And tomorrow belonged to them.
