Chapter 7 - Leo Moretti Burned His Empire to Bring Them HomeLeo learned Chloe was gone at 5:12 in the morning.

Vincent received the call.
Thomas was alive but critically wounded.
Anthony was dead.
The estate was burning.
Chloe and Dominic were missing.
Vincent had known Leo Moretti for twenty-two years.
He had seen him furious.
He had seen him kill.
He had seen him receive news of his father’s death without changing expression.
He had never seen what happened when he heard that his son had been taken.
Leo became completely still.
That was worse than rage.
“Location.”
“Unknown.”
“Ricci?”
“Gone from Albany. The farmhouse was empty.”
Leo looked toward the dark highway.
Ricci had played him.
Every movement for weeks had been designed to pull him away from the estate.
Leo turned to his men.
“Find them.”
For the next six hours, New York’s criminal infrastructure became a search engine.
Every camera.
Every toll booth.
Every crooked dispatcher.
Every private airfield.
Every dockworker.
Every police contact.
Leo called in every debt he possessed.
Then he did something no Moretti boss had ever done.
He contacted the FBI.
Vincent stared at him.
“You’re serious?”
“My son is three months old.”
“Leo—”
“I do not care who brings him home.”
The federal agent on the other end of the call was Special Agent Rebecca Shaw.
She had spent six years trying to put Leo in prison.
When she heard his voice, she assumed it was a trap.
Then Leo said four words.
“They took my child.”
Everything changed.
Ricci had warrants across multiple jurisdictions.
Human trafficking.
Racketeering.
Murder conspiracy.
Kidnapping.
Shaw could move resources Leo could not.
Leo could access information she could not.
For twelve hours, law enforcement and organized crime quietly worked toward the same objective.
At 5:31 that afternoon, a traffic camera identified Anthony’s SUV.
At 5:44, a stolen van was traced north.
At 6:02, a burner phone connected to Ricci pinged near an abandoned textile warehouse.
Leo was already moving before Shaw finished speaking.
Inside the warehouse, Chloe had lost track of time.
Dominic was hungry.
That was becoming the only thing that mattered.
Ricci had allowed her to feed him twice.
Each time, two armed men watched.
Humiliation meant nothing.
Fear meant nothing.
Dominic needed her.
So she endured.
Now he slept against her chest.
Ricci sat across the warehouse.
“You love him.”
Chloe looked down.
“Yes.”
“Children are weaknesses.”
“No.”
“They always are.”
“You never had any?”
Ricci’s face hardened.
“One.”
Chloe looked up.
“Where is he?”
“Dead.”
Something in his voice changed.
For one second, she understood.
This entire world was composed of wounded men teaching themselves that cruelty was strength.
“What happened?”
“Leo’s father.”
The answer was quiet.
Chloe stared.
Ricci looked toward Dominic.
“My son was twenty-two.”
And suddenly everything made sense.
This war had begun long before Chloe.
Long before Leo became boss.
Long before Dominic existed.
Fathers had killed sons.
Sons inherited vengeance.
Generation after generation.
Chloe held Dominic tighter.
“No.”
Ricci looked at her.
“What?”
“This ends with him.”
She kissed Dominic’s forehead.
“He doesn’t inherit this.”
Ricci laughed.
“You think Leo can escape what he is?”
“I think he can choose.”
“Men like us don’t choose.”
“Then maybe that’s why your son died.”
Ricci stood.
Chloe immediately knew she had gone too far.
He crossed the room.
His hand closed around her throat.
Dominic woke and screamed.
“You know nothing about my son.”
Chloe struggled for air.
Then gunfire erupted outside.
Ricci froze.
Chloe smiled through the pressure on her throat.
“He came.”
Chaos exploded.
Men shouted.
Lights shattered.
Ricci dragged Chloe upright.
Dominic screamed between them.
Ricci pulled a pistol.
The warehouse doors burst inward.
Leo entered through smoke.
Chloe had never seen him like that.
There was blood on his coat.
A weapon in his hand.
His eyes found her instantly.
Then Dominic.
Everything else ceased to exist.
Ricci pressed the gun against Chloe’s head.
“Drop it.”
Leo stopped.
“Give them to me.”
“Drop the gun.”
Leo lowered it.
“Kick it away.”
He did.
Ricci smiled.
“The great Leo Moretti.”
Leo looked only at Chloe.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m okay.”
“Dominic?”
“Hungry. Scared. Okay.”
Leo’s eyes closed for half a second.
Relief.
Ricci laughed.
“Look at you.”
Leo opened his eyes.
“You won.”
Ricci blinked.
“I what?”
“You wanted the empire.”
Leo spread his empty hands.
“Take it.”
Silence.
Vincent stood somewhere in the shadows.
Federal agents surrounded the building outside.
Ricci stared.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Leo’s voice was calm.
“The docks. The gambling rooms. The collections. Every illegal operation carrying my name. I’m finished.”
Chloe stared at him.
Ricci’s face twisted.
“You expect me to believe you would surrender everything?”
Leo looked at Dominic.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because none of it is worth them.”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
Ricci’s gun shifted.
That tiny movement was enough.
Chloe dropped.
Leo moved.
A shot cracked.
Then another.
Ricci stumbled.
The weapon fell.
Vincent emerged.
Agents stormed the warehouse.
Chloe covered Dominic with her body.
Leo reached her.
He dropped to his knees.
His hands moved frantically over her face, shoulders, arms.
“Chloe.”
“I’m okay.”
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Dominic.”
She placed the baby into his arms.
Leo broke.
There was no other word for it.
His forehead dropped against Dominic’s.
His shoulders shook once.
Then again.
Chloe wrapped her arms around both of them.
Around her ruthless man.
Around their terrified baby.
Around the strange family they had created from fear, bargaining, blood, and something neither had intended to become love.
Behind them, agents placed Ricci in handcuffs.
Leo looked at Chloe.
“I meant it.”
“What?”
“I’m done.”
She touched his face.
“With Ricci?”
“With all of it.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I choose you.”
Then Dominic.
May you like
“I choose him.”
And for the first time, Leo Moretti walked away from power willingly.
