Chapter 5

The morning sun washed over the penthouse in a golden haze, but the peaceful atmosphere was interrupted by a muffled chime coming from Ethan’s private wall safe behind the mahogany shelving unit.

I was curled up on the velvet sofa with a cup of black coffee when I saw Ethan punch a complex numerical code into the digital keypad.

The heavy steel door swung open, revealing stacks of old financial portfolios, legal documents, and a small, velvet-lined wooden box. Instead of pulling out business contracts, Ethan lifted the wooden box, walked over to the sofa, and sat down beside me.

"What's in the box?" I asked curiously, setting my coffee cup down. "

My history," Ethan said quietly, lifting the brass latch. Inside lay a collection of faded black-and-white photographs, an antique silver pocket watch, and a heavy gold locket.

He pulled out a photograph of a stunning woman with kind eyes and dark hair strikingly similar to his own, smiling warmly while standing in front of a modest shipping warehouse by the New York docks.

"My mother, Elena,"

Ethan explained, his thumb gently tracing the edge of the photograph.

"Before the empire, before the syndicates, before the violence... my family owned a legitimate shipping and logistics company right here in Manhattan

. We were honest people trying to build a future." "What happened?" I asked softly, sensing the heavy sorrow lingering beneath his words.

"A rival syndicate wanted our dock terminals," Ethan’s jaw tightened, his gray eyes darkening with distant pain. "When my father refused to sell out, they burned our warehouses to the ground.

My mother was inside. I was ten years old." A cold shiver rushed down my spine. I reached out, placing my hand over his clenched fist, my fingers gently untensing his grip.

"Ethan... I am so sorry."

"The police were bought off. The justice system failed us," Ethan continued, looking down at our joined hands.

"That was the day I learned that in this city, the law doesn't protect the innocent—it only protects the powerful.

So I built my own power. I took over the remnants of my father's business, crushed the men who destroyed my family, and made sure no one would ever have the leverage to hurt anyone I cared about again."

He turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers securely with mine, his piercing gaze locking onto my soul.

"That's why I was so furious when Richard Caldwell tried to use you as collateral," Ethan whispered fiercely.

"Because I swore I would never let innocent people get crushed beneath the gears of corporate greed and mafia warfare ever again.

Especially not you, Hannah." Tears filled my eyes. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against his shoulder, letting him hold me in the quiet sanctuary of his arms.

The mafia boss who feared no man in New York had bared his soul to me, and in doing so, he had given me the most precious gift of all: absolute trust.

The fallout from Richard Caldwell’s arrest rippled through Wall Street and the New York underworld like an earthquake.

Caldwell & Associates was seized by federal regulators, and the Blackwood syndicate’s offshore bank accounts were frozen by morning.

But the vacuum left behind by a dismantled criminal network created a dangerous power struggle among rival factions looking to seize control of the lucrative shipping docks.

Sitting across from Ethan in his penthouse office, I stared at a complex digital map of Manhattan harbor districts displayed on his holographic workstation.

"If we don't consolidate the logistics terminals before the other syndicates move in, New York is going to experience a turf war unlike anything we’ve seen in a decade," Ethan explained, pointing to three key shipping hubs highlighted in red.

"Then let's beat them to it," I said decisively, standing up and leaning over the console. Ethan blinked, looking up at me in surprise.

"Excuse me?" "You heard me," I smiled confidently, tapping the screen. "For three years, I managed corporate communications, asset allocation, and risk management for Caldwell’s entire portfolio.

I know every shell corporation, every real estate loophole, and every zoning permit in this city.

You don't just need a mafia boss to secure those terminals, Ethan—you need a brilliant strategist."

Ethan leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, incredibly proud smile spreading across his handsome face. "You want to go to war with the New York underworld alongside me?"

"I'm not going to war," I corrected smoothly, adjusting my blazer. "I'm going to conduct a corporate hostile takeover. And trust me, I'm much scarier than an accountant."

Over the next week, the penthouse transformed into a war room of corporate strategy and underworld intelligence.

Working side by side with Ethan, I analyzed municipal records, exposed corrupt city council members who were taking bribes from rival syndicates, and legally acquired the harbor terminals under a clean, legitimate subsidiary of Romano Logistics.

We weren't just surviving in Ethan's dark world anymore—we were actively reshaping it.

And every evening, when the glowing screens went dark and the city outside quieted down, Ethan would pull me into his arms, kissing me with a depth of passion and reverence that made me realize I had never truly belonged anywhere else.
