Chapter 2

The words hung in the air, freezing every drop of blood in my veins. Someone cut your fuel line. I stared at Ethan, my mind violently rejecting the premise. "That's... that's impossible. Richard is a corporate executive, not a criminal.
He handles commercial real estate and accounting portfolios!" Ethan walked back into the room, closing the distance between us with silent, predator-like steps. He pulled a folded sheet of heavy cardstock from his pocket and laid it flat on the table.
"Look at the seal on the folder you delivered," Ethan commanded gently. I walked over, my fingers trembling as I picked up the leather folder and pulled out the top document.
The corporate letterhead belonged to Caldwell & Associates, but stamped across the bottom in bright red ink was a confidential marker belonging to the Blackwood Shipping Syndicate—a front organization for illegal offshore accounts that Ethan’s security team had been investigating for months.
"Richard isn't just an accountant," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "He’s the primary money launderer for the Blackwood syndicate. And three days ago, someone stole twenty million dollars from their digital ledger.
The audit report inside that folder points the finger directly at someone inside his firm."
"Me," I whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on me like a physical blow.
"He set me up to take the fall. If the syndicate came looking for the missing money, they’d find my name on the delivery logs, tracing the stolen data right to my car."
"And when your car stalled outside my gates in the middle of a storm," Ethan continued, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe, "the plan was for you to vanish quietly before morning, leaving the syndicate to believe I had intercepted and eliminated the thief."
Tears of shock and anger pricked the corners of my eyes. I sank onto the edge of the mattress, burying my face in my hands.
Four years of honest work, late nights, and quiet dedication—all rewarded with a death sentence orchestrated by the man I called boss. A heavy warmth settled over my shoulders as Ethan draped his jacket around me.
He sat down on the edge of the bed beside me, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his large frame.
"You're safe here, Hannah," Ethan said softly, his voice holding an unexpected gentleness that completely contradicted his mafia boss reputation.
"No one touches anyone inside my home. But if we're going to keep you alive, we need to play a very dangerous game." "What game?" I asked, looking up through my tears.
"Tomorrow morning, the news will report that your car was found empty and destroyed," Ethan replied, a fierce, protective glint flashing in his eyes.
"To the world—and to Richard Caldwell—you’re going to be presumed dead. And the only way to protect you is to let everyone believe you belong to me."
The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a brilliant golden light over the sprawling stone courtyards of the Romano estate.
But inside the grand dining hall, the atmosphere was freezing. I sat across from Ethan at an ornate mahogany table, sipping black coffee while reviewing a digital tablet his tech security team had set up for me.
Across the screen, local news broadcasts scrolled headlines of a fiery explosion consuming an abandoned vehicle matching my car's description near the North River.
Local Secretary Presumed Dead in Mysterious Highway Inferno. My breath hitched in my throat as I read the words. To my younger sister Chloe back in Ohio, to my coworkers, and to Richard Caldwell, I no longer existed.
"They bought it," Ethan said quietly, setting down his porcelain teacup. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly combed, looking every bit the untouchable Wall Street titan.
"Richard has already filed a condolence memo with your department. He thinks the problem is solved." "And what about the syndicate?"
I asked, my hands shaking slightly around my coffee mug.
"Won't they look for the real audit files?"
"They're looking at them right now," Ethan smiled thinly, a dark, calculating expression crossing his face.
"Except the files they received point directly to Richard as the mastermind who embezzled the funds and tried to pin it on a ghost. By tonight, my associates will make sure the authorities have every financial record they need to dismantle Caldwell & Associates permanently."
"So... it's over?" I asked, a mix of relief and profound disorientation washing over me. "I can go back to Ohio? Back to my sister?"
Ethan’s expression hardened instantly. He stood up from the table, walked around to my chair, and leaned down, placing both hands on the armrests, trapping me in my seat.
"Not yet," he said firmly. "Richard is connected to high-level politicians.
If he realizes the audit made it to my hands and you survived, he and his buyers will hunt you down the second you step foot outside this estate.
The only way to guarantee your absolute safety is to stay here."
"As what? Your prisoner?" I challenged, fire flaring in my chest. "As my fiancée," Ethan corrected smoothly. I stared at him in absolute disbelief.
"Your what?!" "Tomorrow evening, I am hosting a high-society charity gala at the Plaza Hotel," Ethan explained, his gray eyes completely serious.
"Every major elite, politician, and syndicate boss in New York will be in attendance—including Richard Caldwell.
If I walk into that ballroom alone, people whisper. If I walk in introducing the brilliant corporate strategist who survived a tragic accident and captured my heart... no one will dare touch you.
You will be draped in Romano protection where even federal judges can't question it."
"Ethan, I can't play the role of a mafia boss's fiancée!" I protested, standing up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the marble floor.
May you like
"I don't belong in your world! I'm an ordinary person!" Ethan stood to his full height, towering over me, his gaze unyielding yet magnetic.
"Ordinary people don't survive a setup by the most dangerous cartel in the city, Hannah. You do. And whether you like it or not... you're already in my world."
