Chapter 4 - Carmine stumbled into the room while desperately dragging a bleeding Dominic by his collar.

Dominic’s expensive suit jacket was entirely missing.
Bright red, frothy arterial blood completely soaked his ruined white shirt and pulsed steadily from a massive, gaping hole located right near his right shoulder.
His skin was shockingly pale, and his legs were completely failing him as Carmine brutally hauled him toward the prep table.
"Clear the damn table!"
Carmine roared over the deafening sounds of the upstairs gunfire.
Clara instantly ripped a fresh sterile sheet open and tossed it across the steel surface, purposefully letting it hang low to completely block little Leo from their view.
Carmine hoisted Dominic up onto the steel surface.
The wounded underboss groaned in sheer agony, and his eyes rolled helplessly backward into his skull.
"Put heavy pressure on it right now."
Clara frantically snapped on a pair of latex gloves.
Carmine mashed his large hands down hard against Dominic’s spurting shoulder.
Carmine's own face was heavily streaked with black soot, and a steady stream of fresh blood was leaking from a nasty gash ripped across his forehead.
He was panting heavily, completely surrounded by the wild, uncontrolled energy of the massive firefight raging right above their heads.
"Exactly where is the primary bleeding coming from?"
"It is right near the damn collarbone."
"It was a high-caliber rifle round."
Clara forcefully shoved Carmine’s bloody hands out of her way.
A fountain of hot blood erupted instantly, thick and terrifyingly fast.
The critical subclavian artery had been severely shredded by the bullet.
"I desperately need the metal surgical clamps!"
"Open the top drawer now!"
Carmine obeyed her barked command without a single word of argument.
He ripped the metal drawer open and slapped the cold steel instruments directly into her waiting hand.
Clara shoved her gloved fingers directly down into the pulsing, open wound.
Dominic let out a bloodcurdling scream.
"I am so sorry."
She desperately rooted around through the torn, slippery muscle tissue until she finally felt the pulsing, shredded hole blown into the slick artery.
She blindly clamped down hard.
The violent eruption of blood finally slowed to a manageable seep.
Clara blew out a massive breath and rapidly stuffed the gaping hole with layers of thick hemostatic gauze.
The heavy gunfire suddenly intensified right above them.
Another massive explosion violently rocked the house, raining a thick cloud of plaster dust down from the ceiling.
Carmine abruptly turned his back and marched toward the heavy steel door.
He calmly pulled a fresh, loaded magazine from his pocket and forcefully slapped it into his tactical rifle.
"Are you really leaving us down here?"
Clara’s shaking hands were completely painted in Dominic’s blood.
"There are roughly twenty heavily armed Lupertazzi men standing inside my front foyer."
Carmine’s voice was completely devoid of humanity.
The cold, ruthless part of his soul that belonged strictly to violence had completely taken over.
"Lock this steel door the absolute second I step out."
"The keypad code is eight, one, four."
"That will instantly engage all the heavy deadbolts."
"Do not open this door for a single soul except for me."
He casually pulled a heavy black pistol from his waistband and dropped it onto the metal surgical tray with a loud clatter.
"If any other man manages to step through that door, you aim directly at the center of his chest and you keep pulling the trigger until the weapon clicks empty."
He marched out into the smoky hallway before she could even formulate a response.
The heavy door slammed shut behind him.
Clara punched the three numbers into the glowing keypad.
Three massive steel locks violently slammed into place.
She had just been completely sealed inside a concrete tomb located directly beneath a bloody battlefield.
She rushed back to Dominic’s side.
He had completely lost consciousness, and his breathing was terrifyingly shallow and erratic.
Clara frantically spiked a bag of saline, jammed an intravenous line deep into a vein in his uninjured left arm, and pressed her fingers against his neck to check his pulse.
It was incredibly weak, but it was still faintly thumping.
Then, she slowly reached over and picked up the heavy handgun.
It felt unnaturally heavy in her hands and smelled strongly of sharp gun oil and cold metal.
She stood rigidly right in the center of the room, positioning herself directly between the locked door and the steel table where Leo was still silently hiding.
For two agonizing hours, Clara simply stood there and listened to the brutal violence unfolding right above her head.
She clearly heard grown men screaming in agony, and she heard the beautiful plaster walls being chewed to pieces by endless waves of automatic gunfire.
She literally felt heavy bodies slamming into the floorboards through the deep vibrations echoing down into the stone foundation.
She did not shed a single tear or shake in fear.
A terrifying, complete numbness slowly settled heavily over her mind.
If that locked door suddenly swung open and the man walking through it was not Carmine Rossi, she was fully prepared to murder him in cold blood.
Eventually, the deafening gunfire finally sputtered out and died.
The heavy, suffocating silence that immediately followed was somehow significantly worse.
Ten long minutes dragged by.
Then twenty excruciating minutes.
A heavy, deliberate knock suddenly struck the steel door.
Clara instantly raised the heavy pistol with both hands, aiming it squarely at the center of the solid metal.
The electronic deadbolts slowly clicked and retracted into the wall.
The heavy steel door groaned as it slowly swung open.
Carmine was standing squarely in the opening.
He looked exactly like a deranged worker walking out of a bloody slaughterhouse.
His expensive shirt was completely shredded to rags and drenched in thick, dark blood.
The skin across his massive knuckles was split wide open and raw.
He leaned his heavy weight heavily against the doorframe while his smoking rifle dangled uselessly from its tactical sling.
The ruined hallway looming behind him was pitch black and completely choked with thick, choking smoke.
He stared blankly at Clara, and then his gaze dropped down to the loaded gun aimed directly at his bleeding chest.
He did not even attempt to flinch or move out of the way.
His dark eyes had been completely hollowed out by whatever unspeakable horrors he had just committed upstairs.
Clara slowly, carefully lowered the heavy weapon.
Her numb hands finally began to tremble violently.
She awkwardly engaged the safety switch and dropped the pistol back onto the metal tray.
Carmine let out a massive, shuddering exhale and finally stepped into the room.
He pushed the door shut, slumped his back against the wall, and slowly slid all the way down until he hit the floor.
He completely buried his face in his bloody, bruised hands.
"It is finally finished."
His voice was completely raw and shredded.
"The big boss of the Lupertazzi family personally led this assault."
"He just died bleeding out inside my front hallway."
"The rest of his men either threw down their guns and surrendered or managed to escape into the woods."
Clara silently walked over to where he sat.
She did not say a single word to him.
She dropped to her knees, poured cool sterile saline over a clean medical towel, and gently took his massive hands in hers.
Very carefully, she began scrubbing the caked dirt and drying blood completely out of the raw, torn skin across his split knuckles.
Carmine slowly raised his tired eyes to look at her.
The ruthless, unfeeling monster was finally receding back into the shadows.
Only a deeply traumatized, utterly exhausted man remained sitting on the floor.
He silently studied Clara’s impossibly steady, resolute expression.
She had absolutely not broken under the pressure.
She had firmly held the line.
Carmine slid a relatively clean hand around the back of her neck and gently pulled her closer to him.
He did not attempt to kiss her lips.
He simply rested his heavy, bruised forehead gently against hers.
They just stayed there sitting on the bloodstained cellar floor, silently breathing the exact same air and tightly holding onto one another inside the smoking wreckage of his violent empire.
Spring finally arrived in Chicago, feeling almost like a long-overdue apology.
The dirty slush and snow completely vanished into the city drains.
The skeletal, bare trees surrounding the massive estate finally pushed out bright new green growth.
One full month had officially passed since the brutal attack on the manor.
The massive stains of blood had been professionally scrubbed away from the marble floors.
The shattered, blown-out windows had all been replaced with even thicker, military-grade ballistic glass.
The once-mighty Lupertazzi crime family had effectively ceased to exist on the streets.
All of its surviving illegal rackets and holdings had been quickly absorbed into Carmine’s massive organization, while its dead soldiers had been quietly buried deep inside the fresh concrete foundations of brand-new downtown high-rises.
Clara stood quietly out on the paved driveway, letting the warm morning sunlight wash over her face.
A sleek, black SUV was idling right near the front steps with its heavy trunk popped wide open.
Carmine emerged from the heavy front doors wearing a sharp, light gray suit.
The undisputed king had permanently secured his bloody crown.
He was carrying a very thick, stuffed manila folder in his hand.
He stopped walking when he was several feet away from her.
"Dominic’s doctors have officially cleared him to travel."
"He will be starting aggressive physical therapy soon."
"The rest of the wounded men have fully recovered."
"Your basement cellar is completely empty."
"I know that," Clara replied softly.
Carmine extended the thick folder toward her.
"Inside this folder are the official deeds to a beautiful, four-bedroom home located inside a highly secure, gated community in San Diego."
"The entire property is fully paid off in cash and legally held through a completely legitimate corporate shell entity."
His deep voice remained perfectly level and professional.
"There are pristine, brand-new Social Security numbers in there for both you and Leo, along with banking information routed securely through Switzerland that contains enough clean money that you will never have to work another grueling hospital shift for the rest of your life."
Clara just stared down at the extended folder without reaching up to take it.
"The bloody war is officially over," Carmine continued calmly.
"I promised you that when it finally ended, you would no longer be forced to remain here as my captive guest."
He held the heavy folder perfectly steady in the air.
"You are completely free to leave right now."
"The armed men driving that vehicle will remain stationed with you out in California for six full months just to ensure the relocation is completely secure."
"After that detail is finished, you and your son will completely disappear."
He finally looked directly into her eyes.
"Goodbye, Clara."
Clara silently studied the idling, waiting vehicle.
She pictured the sunny state of California, the swaying palm trees, the blissfully ordinary suburban neighbors, and the completely mundane parent-teacher meetings.
She vividly imagined spending the rest of her life pretending to be a grieving widow who had simply inherited a fortune, forcing fake smiles at random grocery-store cashiers while silently carrying the horrific memory of clamping a severed artery inside a dark basement while heavily armed men slaughtered each other just upstairs.
Then, she slowly shifted her gaze back to Carmine.
His stoic expression revealed absolutely nothing.
His dark, intense eyes remained locked firmly on hers.
He was honorably giving her exactly what he had promised her from the start.
He was handing her a permanent way out of the darkness.
"You are an absolute monster," she stated plainly.
"Yes, I am."
Carmine did not hesitate to agree with her.
"You ruthlessly murder and extort innocent people."
"Every single dollar hidden inside those Swiss accounts is absolutely dripping in human blood."
"Every last cent of it is," he confirmed coldly.
"If I choose to stay here, Leo will grow up completely surrounded by loaded weapons."
"He will sit down at the dinner table every night with a man who casually orders executions."
"He will also grow up protected by a literal army of loyal men," Carmine countered, his voice dropping an octave.
"He will attend the absolute finest elite schools in the world."
"He will never again have to experience hunger, the biting cold, or absolute terror."
"And neither will you."
Clara let out a short, incredibly bitter laugh.
She looked down at her own two hands.
They were the delicate hands of a dedicated nurse, specifically trained and intended for healing the sick.
But they had also gripped a loaded weapon with the intent to kill, and they had scrubbed the literal blood off a ruthless killer.
The fantasy of the safe, ordinary world had always been a vicious lie.
Clara had spent her entire life suffering inside that ordinary world.
It was a cruel, indifferent world that happily permitted a desperate single mother to work fourteen-hour shifts until she physically collapsed from exhaustion.
It was a world that casually allowed a sweet, six-year-old child to literally choke on cold air simply because turning on the heat cost too much damn money.
The so-called ordinary world did not give a single damn whether she and Leo lived or died.
Carmine Rossi actually did.
He was an incredibly brutal and dangerous man, but he never once lied to her about exactly what kind of monster he was.
Inside his dark, violent world, personal loyalty was absolute and unbreakable.
Protection was completely guaranteed.
"I do not want to go to San Diego."
His arm, still holding out the heavy folder, slowly lowered to his side.
Carmine’s rigidly controlled expression finally cracked just enough to expose a wave of fierce, undeniable relief.
"But I will absolutely not just become a silent little wife who blindly ignores the terrible things you do while you control this entire city."
Clara’s voice hardened into pure steel.
"I do not care at all about your shipping ports or your dirty concrete contracts."
"But the entire medical operation belongs exclusively to me."
She confidently took a step closer to him.
"I am going to build a massive, state-of-the-art trauma center down in that basement."
"I will employ actual, licensed physicians and build a fully clandestine, elite surgical facility."
"If your loyal men are going to bleed out there on the streets for you, they are going to receive the absolute best medical treatment available on the Eastern Seaboard."
Carmine instantly closed the remaining distance between them and casually tossed the thick folder onto the hood of the idling SUV.
"Agreed."
"And Leo remains strictly outside the bounds of the family organization."
"He absolutely never learns the dirty business, and he never touches a single weapon."
"If you ever even attempt to drag him down into this violent world, I will put a bullet in you myself."
Carmine slowly reached up and buried his large hand deep in her hair.
His thick thumb gently traced the sharp line of her jaw.
The touch was incredibly heavy, deeply possessive, and felt entirely inevitable.
"I would honestly expect nothing less from you."
He leaned down and kissed her.
It was absolutely not a gentle kiss.
It was incredibly hard and almost bruising, carrying the metallic taste of a dark, binding pact being permanently sealed.
It was the violent collision of two broken people who had successfully survived the absolute worst parts of the world and simply decided they were going to control them together.
Clara eagerly returned the fierce kiss and locked her hand tightly around the expensive lapel of his tailored suit.
She clearly felt the heavy, cold weight of the loaded weapon sitting in his shoulder holster pressing against her hip.
She did not pull away or recoil in disgust.
She simply pulled herself closer to him.
May you like
Clara Hayes was officially no longer a terrified captive.
She had successfully crowned herself the reigning queen of a very dark kingdom, and she was standing exactly where she had chosen to remain.
