Chapter 3 - "The Lupertazzi crew already knows exactly what you look like."

"They successfully hacked into the hospital's security cameras."
"If these two dead idiots managed to track you down, more hitters will definitely follow."
"They will pay a visit to your crappy apartment, and then they will pay a visit to your son’s elementary school."
He gestured casually toward the two bleeding bodies on the ground.
"The armored vehicle is waiting for us downstairs."
"Walk."
Clara stared in horror at the pool of dark blood rapidly expanding around the shorter man’s shattered head.
She instantly pictured little Leo sleeping peacefully in his warm, safe bedroom while sweet Mrs Higgins dozed on the sofa.
A wave of absolute, paralyzing terror shot straight down her spine.
That envelope of fifty thousand dollars had absolutely not purchased her freedom.
It had merely purchased her a front-row ticket to a blood-soaked mafia war.
She scooped up her dropped purse with violently trembling hands and numbly marched toward the exit.
The sprawling Rossi estate was located roughly thirty miles outside the city limits, heavily concealed behind massive wrought-iron gates and thick rows of snow-dusted pine trees.
It looked significantly more like a fortified military compound than a residential home.
Clara sat huddled in the spacious backseat of the SUV with her arms wrapped protectively around a sleeping Leo.
Carmine’s armed men had only permitted her to rush inside her apartment long enough to gently wake the boy, bundle him up tightly in a warm blanket, and carry him right back out the door.
Leo was incredibly groggy and clutching his plastic asthma inhaler tightly in his little fist.
He was simply too exhausted to even cry.
"Mommy, where exactly are we going?"
"We are just going to a fun sleepover," Clara whispered into his hair.
"It is a special surprise sleepover."
She pressed a soft kiss against his messy curls.
Her terrified eyes locked onto the cold driver’s gaze in the rearview mirror.
The man just stared blankly back at her, showing absolutely zero human emotion.
The heavy SUV finally rolled to a smooth stop at the bottom of the grand steps leading up to a massive stone manor.
Dominic was standing right there waiting for them near the massive wooden entrance doors.
He looked significantly healthier than the bloody mess Clara had last seen.
His expensive gray suit was immaculately clean and perfectly tailored.
He stepped forward and pulled the heavy car door open.
"The boss is waiting for you inside his private study."
Clara gathered Leo into her arms and carried him up the grand entrance steps.
The interior of the house was aggressively, overwhelmingly opulent.
Dark polished wood paneling, soaring vaulted ceilings, and impossibly thick Persian rugs completely swallowed the sound of their footsteps.
Heavily armed guards stood like statues at every window and guarded every single hallway intersection.
The massive estate practically hummed with the quiet, lethal tension of an active military encampment.
An older housekeeper with surprisingly kind eyes rushed over to them.
"I can easily take the sweet boy upstairs to a comfortable guest room."
"I can warm up some nice milk for him."
Clara instantly tightened her fierce grip on her child.
"He is staying right here with me."
"You really should speak to Carmine completely alone," Dominic suggested gently.
"She will guard him with her life."
"I absolutely promise you that."
Clara nervously eyed the gentle woman, and then looked down at Leo, who was already drifting back to sleep against her shoulder.
She very reluctantly lowered him down into the housekeeper's waiting arms.
"You have exactly ten minutes."
"If I do not walk back out here in ten minutes, I am going to scream loud enough to wake up this entire damn house."
She turned and followed Dominic down a long, shadowed corridor.
He stopped and pushed open a set of massive, heavy double doors.
The lavish study smelled strongly of burning cedar wood and rich, expensive leather.
A roaring fire crackled brightly inside a massive stone hearth.
Carmine stood near the tall window, staring silently out into the pitch-black forest.
He slowly turned around when Clara stepped into the room.
He had fully recovered from his devastating injuries.
A bespoke navy blue suit stretched perfectly across his broad, muscular shoulders.
He radiated an aura of immense power, absolute control, and terrifying menace.
He was absolutely no longer the pathetic, dying body bleeding out on a dirty meatpacking table.
He was the undisputed king who owned the entire city.
"Clara."
"Please, sit down."
"I absolutely do not want to sit down."
The icy fear she felt in the garage had fully ignited into a blazing inferno of rage.
"You explicitly told me to forget I ever saw your face!"
"You promised me that I could just leave and go back to my life!"
"I told you a great many things," Carmine replied smoothly.
He casually strolled over toward his massive desk.
"I simply failed to predict that the Lupertazzi crew would manage to access the municipal traffic camera network."
"They moved significantly faster than I ever expected them to."
"Your enemies literally pressed a loaded gun right against my head!"
Clara aggressively marched right up to him.
She truly no longer gave a damn who this man was.
She was a terrified, furious mother whose only child had just been directly threatened.
"I saved your miserable life, and you repaid me by dragging a bloody mafia war right to my front door."
"You dragged this war right to my innocent son."
Carmine stopped dead in his tracks.
Her hair was a tangled, wild mess.
Filthy soot and garage dirt completely coated her work scrubs.
Her eyes were completely feral with righteous anger.
Most grown men instinctively lowered their voices whenever they were near him.
Most hardened criminals immediately stared down at the floor to avoid his gaze.
Clara looked like she genuinely wanted to rip his throat out with her bare teeth.
It instantly commanded his complete and total respect.
"You are absolutely right."
She blinked, completely caught off guard.
"What did you just say?"
"You saved my life."
"I owed you a clean, safe separation, and I ultimately failed to provide you with one."
"My desperate enemies discovered a single exposed thread, and they immediately pulled hard on it."
Carmine leaned his hips casually against the edge of his desk and crossed his thick arms over his chest.
"The two idiots who cornered you inside that garage are dead, but more hitters will inevitably come looking for you."
"Your apartment building and your hospital workplace are completely compromised."
"Then what the hell am I supposed to do now?"
Her fiery anger finally cracked under the crushing weight of her terrifying new reality.
"Do I just run away in the middle of the night?"
"Do I have to completely change my identity?"
"Absolutely not."
"Running away would only guarantee that you get killed."
"If you try to flee, they will ruthlessly hunt you down."
Carmine’s answer was devastatingly flat and factual.
"You will remain safely tucked away beneath my roof, and they will never be able to touch you."
Clara just stared at him in horror.
"You honestly expect me and my child to just live inside a mafia fortress?"
"I fully expect to keep you alive."
"The Lupertazzi family is already bleeding out and dying."
"I am systematically taking over their territory, one city block at a time."
"Within two short months, their entire family will completely cease to exist."
His cold expression did not shift a single millimeter.
"Until that glorious day comes, you and little Leo will remain right here."
"So I am officially your prisoner."
Carmine’s jaw instantly locked tight.
He slowly stepped forward until there were only a few inches of space separating their bodies.
Clara was forced to tilt her head up just to meet his furious gaze.
"A prisoner is someone locked inside a small cage."
"You are an honored guest of my family."
His deep voice dropped to a dangerous, rumbling purr.
"You will immediately receive absolutely anything you could possibly desire."
"Your son will have access to the finest private physicians, elite tutors, and every conceivable form of luxury care available on this earth."
"But you will absolutely not step foot outside these iron gates because I cannot guarantee that your heart will keep beating once you cross that line."
"You have completely destroyed my entire life."
Hot tears of pure frustration finally spilled over Clara’s thick eyelashes.
Carmine slowly raised his large hand toward her face.
For one terrifying second, she fully expected him to strike her.
Instead, his rough, callused fingertips gently swiped a smear of black garage grease off her soft cheek.
The unexpected touch was radiating heat, incredibly heavy, and surprisingly gentle.
"I know that I did."
His rough voice softened considerably.
"And now I am going to make damn sure I keep you alive so you can stick around and hate me for doing it."
Absolute, unfathomable wealth possessed a truly deafening silence when a person had spent their entire life trapped inside the chaotic noise of basic survival.
For the first two agonizing weeks, Clara found it completely impossible to sleep.
The massive bed inside her luxurious guest suite was constructed from high-end memory foam and draped in thousand-thread-count Egyptian cotton, but she just lay there rigidly staring up at the ceiling.
She constantly strained her ears listening for blaring police sirens that never arrived, and for the thud of tactical boots marching down the corridor.
The sprawling estate operated around the clock with effortless, military precision.
Gourmet meals magically appeared outside her door on polished silver trays.
The ambient air temperature was meticulously maintained at exactly seventy-two degrees.
Leo’s terrifying wheezing completely vanished within the first forty-eight hours of arriving.
The heavy reinforced doors and massive industrial air filtration systems completely eradicated the toxic mold and freezing dampness that had plagued their cheap apartment.
Money didn't just purchase fancy luxury items.
It literally purchased clean oxygen.
It purchased a longer life.
Clara absolutely despised how deeply grateful she felt.
The familiar, gnawing anxiety of grinding poverty slowly evaporated from her tense body, only to be quickly replaced by the much colder, darker fear of luxurious captivity.
She was strictly forbidden from approaching the main security gates.
The polite staff constantly redirected her away from the sprawling east wing, which was where Carmine and his ruthless captains actively orchestrated their bloody turf war.
She very rarely caught a glimpse of him.
Carmine drifted silently through his own massive home like a dark ghost at bizarre, irregular hours, almost always flanked by a wall of heavily armed men.
Their sparse encounters were incredibly brief.
A silent nod passing through the gleaming kitchen at three in the morning.
A heavy, prolonged stare exchanged across the manicured courtyard from a second-story window.
He always appeared completely exhausted.
His handsome face had somehow grown even sharper.
Those dark, bruising shadows stubbornly remained plastered beneath his eyes.
By the fourteenth grueling day, the mind-numbing inactivity was completely shredding Clara’s last remaining nerves.
She was a highly trained trauma nurse who functioned almost exclusively on pure adrenaline, urgency, and purpose.
Just sitting idly in a dusty library reading books while men with assault rifles patrolled the rose gardens felt exactly like a slow, agonizing death.
She finally hunted Carmine down and found him standing inside the massive formal dining room on a Tuesday morning.
Giant maps of the city's shipping ports, glossy satellite reconnaissance images, and neat stacks of cheap burner phones completely smothered the long mahogany table.
Carmine stood rigidly at the head of the table, clutching a mug of black coffee in one hand and a thick red permanent marker in the other.
He was dressed casually in a tight black T-shirt and dark trousers.
The sinister outline of a shoulder holster pressed clearly against his hip.
He did not even bother to look up when she entered.
"The kitchen is completely unavailable until ten o'clock."
"The staff is currently doing a shift change."
"I do not want any food."
Clara marched aggressively right up to the edge of the table.
Several large shipping warehouses had been violently crossed out in thick red ink on a glossy satellite photograph.
"I want some actual work."
Carmine finally stopped drawing, set the red marker down, and slowly looked up at her.
"You already have a very important responsibility."
"Keep little Leo calm, happy, and strictly away from the exterior windows."
"That is called hiding, not working!"
Her voice instantly sharpened into a blade.
"I aggressively scrubbed my pristine bathroom twice yesterday just because I desperately needed something to do with my hands."
"I am a trained trauma nurse."
"You have roughly sixty heavily armed men actively patrolling this property right now."
"Someone out there has definitely been injured, or someone is definitely going to be injured very soon."
She jabbed her finger aggressively at a dark, crusty smear on the corner of a city map.
It was dried human blood.
Carmine’s dark eyes slowly tracked her pointing finger.
A thick muscle twitched violently along his sharp jawline.
"This house is absolutely not a hospital."
"The types of injuries my soldiers receive are not standard civilian trauma wounds."
"They are incredibly unpleasant to look at."
"I literally dug an infected, rotting bullet out of your flank inside a filthy meat locker while your deranged underboss aimed a loaded gun at the shadows."
Clara’s tone went completely dead and flat.
"Do not dare patronize me about dealing with unpleasant injuries."
"If you are actively fighting a gang war, you absolutely have fresh casualties."
"Bring those men to me."
Carmine silently studied her blazing eyes.
She wasn't meekly asking for permission to become involved in his dark world.
She was fiercely demanding the immediate return of her own personal agency.
In a violent world where literally every single person blindly obeyed his every command, her blatant defiance hit him like a bucket of freezing water.
It simultaneously enraged him and completely fascinated him.
"Dominic secretly converted the old wine cellar into a makeshift medical triage area."
"Three of my boys took nasty shrapnel or ugly graze wounds during a shootout over the last forty-eight hours."
"A disgraced, drug-addicted local veterinarian has been trying to stitch them up."
"Fire him immediately."
Clara did not hesitate for a microsecond.
"I will require fully sterile surgical instruments, an industrial autoclave, proper overhead surgical lights, a comprehensive trauma suture kit, and completely unrestricted access to that basement."
"If I am officially a prisoner of this damn war, then I am officially going to be your lead medic."
Carmine took a slow, deliberate step closer to her.
His intoxicating scent—a harsh mix of rich cedar and burnt gunpowder—completely enveloped her.
He stared deeply into her face, hunting for any trace of hesitation, and found absolutely none.
"If you actually choose to do this, you are irreversibly crossing a dangerous boundary."
"You officially stop being a random, innocent civilian I pulled off the street, and you officially become an active member of my criminal organization."
His deep voice shifted into a grave, deadly warning.
"If the Lupertazzi family somehow discovers that you are actively treating my wounded soldiers, you will instantly become a high-value assassination target."
"I already have a massive target painted directly on my back."
"At least this way, I’ll be gripping a sharp scalpel when they finally manage to reach me."
Carmine just stared at her in stunned silence.
Then, he slowly began to smile.
It was the very first genuine, unmasked smile Clara had ever seen him wear.
It completely transformed his harsh face, making him look surprisingly younger, significantly more lethal, and disturbingly, darkly magnetic.
"Dominic will escort you down to the cellar immediately."
The damp cellar smelled overwhelmingly of ancient dust and stinging iodine.
Clara spent three grueling days completely rebuilding the space.
She ruthlessly ordered all the expensive wine racks ripped out, demanded the stone floors be scrubbed raw with industrial bleach, and had blazing steel surgical lamps professionally installed.
Her medical efficiency was completely merciless.
Carmine’s hardened soldiers could easily face a brutal murder without blinking an eye, but they very quickly learned to be absolutely terrified of Clara whenever they accidentally tracked mud into her pristine sterile area.
She expertly sutured jagged knife wounds, painstakingly extracted shattered glass fragments after a nasty car bombing, and cleanly set a badly fractured femur.
The hardened men very quickly stopped referring to her as the boss’s strange civilian guest.
They universally started calling her Doc.
The bloody mafia war just kept escalating in severity.
Clara could physically feel the violent tension vibrating through the estate's thick stone walls.
Carmine barely slept at all anymore.
Whenever he ventured down to the cellar to briefly inspect his injured soldiers, he always ended up staying significantly longer than was necessary.
He would just lean against the back wall in the shadows and silently watch Clara’s skilled hands move with icy, controlled precision through torn, bloody flesh.
They very rarely spoke a word to each other.
The spilling of blood and the desperate fight for survival had silently become their shared, intimate language.
During the brutal first week of February, a massive explosion violently rocked the manor's deep foundation.
Clara was sitting safely inside her plush suite, quietly reading a bedtime story to Leo.
The sheer shockwave of the blast violently rattled the heavy reinforced windows.
A priceless antique mirror suddenly shattered off the wall and rained sharp glass across the thick carpet.
Leo screamed in terror and clamped his tiny hands tightly over his ears.
Clara instantly dropped the book, lunged forward, and violently yanked him off the mattress.
"Put your shoes on right now."
"We are following the emergency drill exactly as practiced."
Carmine had strictly forced them to practice this exact nightmare scenario.
Clara quickly shoved Leo’s tiny sneakers onto his feet, snatched the heavy emergency go-bag parked beside the door, and dragged him out into the chaotic corridor.
The entire estate had instantly descended into sheer, bloody chaos.
The security alarms were shrieking in a continuous, deafening mechanical wail.
Heavily armed men were sprinting wildly past her while frantically slapping fresh magazines into their assault rifles.
Thick, acrid black smoke had already started billowing up the grand staircase.
"They completely breached the main front gate!" someone screamed hysterically through a crackling radio.
"It was a massive truck bomb!"
Clara desperately yanked Leo toward the hidden service stairs that led straight down to the basement.
The overhead lights suddenly died.
Pitch darkness completely swallowed the hallway for a terrifying second before the eerie red emergency lamps finally flickered on.
The deafening sound of gunfire erupted.
It was absolutely not the muffled, distant popping noise Clara had heard outside the estate walls earlier.
It was happening right inside the damn house.
Heavy automatic weapons laid down a deafening, staccato rhythm against the shattered marble, the concussive sound striking the heavy air like a physical blow.
"Keep your head tucked down."
Clara’s voice miraculously remained completely steady.
She quickly led a sobbing Leo down the dark steps and shoved him into the glowing medical room.
The clinic was currently empty.
She aggressively shoved him right underneath the heavy steel surgical table.
"Do not move a single muscle until I specifically tell you to."
"Do not make a single sound, Leo."
Leo offered a frantic nod with his massive, terrified eyes and pulled his little knees tight against his shaking chest.
May you like
The heavy steel cellar door suddenly flew open with a violent crash.
Clara instantly spun around with a pair of heavy trauma shears clenched tightly in her raised fist like a dagger.
