Chapter 8 - BEFORE THE ELDERS

The grand foyer of the Falcone estate was illuminated by the harsh white glare of halogen work lights brought in by the council’s security teams.

The storm outside had finally begun to break, the violent downpour slowing to a steady, mournful drizzle against the stained-glass windows.

Sitting around the antique conference table in the formal reception hall were five elderly men—the heads of the five historic families that governed the syndicate’s eastern territories. At the head of the table sat Don Bernardo Moretti, an eighty-year-old patriarch with silver hair and eyes that had seen six decades of underworld warfare.

Standing in the center of the hall, flanked by armed guards, were Damian Costa and Camilla Rossi. Damian’s face was bruised and bloody, his hands bound tightly with zip-ties behind his back. Camilla stood shivering, her ivory robe stained with dirt and soot, her head hung low in utter humiliation.

Beside them, sitting in a wheelchair provided by the medical team, was Judge Arthur Rossi, his broken wrist wrapped in a temporary splint, staring blankly at the floor.

The side door opened, and Matteo Falcone walked into the hall.

He had washed the blood and soot from his face. He wore a crisp, tailored black suit, though he wore no tie, leaving his collar slightly open. The cold, unshakeable authority that had made him the most feared man on the coast was back in full force.

Don Bernardo leaned forward, his weathered hands resting on his walking cane. "The reports from Palermo said you were dead, Matteo. We came here tonight to confirm a transition of power."

"The reports were bought and paid for by treason, Don Bernardo," Matteo said, his voice echoing clearly across the vast room.

Matteo walked over to the table and tossed the silver olive branch pendant onto the mahogany wood. It slid to a halt right in front of the old Don. Beside it, he dropped the micro-drive and a digital recorder containing the audio pulled from the carriage house feeds.

"On that drive," Matteo stated, "you will find the offshore accounts Damian Costa prepared to siphon forty million dollars from the syndicate’s collective pension funds. You will also hear Judge Arthur Rossi confessing to orchestrating the assassination in Sicily to seize control of our maritime shipping lanes."

Don Bernardo picked up the digital recorder, pressed play, and listened for two minutes in absolute silence. The other four bosses exchanged dark, furious glances as the judge’s aristocratic voice clearly outlined the murder of syndicate elders and the execution of a child.

Don Bernardo clicked the recorder off and slowly turned his gaze toward Judge Rossi and Camilla.

"A judge who uses the law as a shield, and a daughter who sells her fiancé like a cheap horse," Don Bernardo said, his voice trembling with deep, ancient disgust. "The Rossi family name is erased from our books. Every asset, every property, every dock slip registered to your name is confiscated by the council as restitution."

Camilla burst into tears, dropping to her knees. "Don Bernardo, please! Have mercy! I was misled!"

"Silence!" Don Bernardo snapped, striking his cane against the floor. "You brought dishonor into a sacred house. You will be placed on a cargo vessel leaving for South America at sunrise. If your feet ever touch American soil again, your lives are forfeit."

Guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing Camilla and her broken father, dragging them out of the hall as Camilla’s pathetic wails faded down the long corridor.

Don Bernardo then looked at Damian Costa.

"And you," the old Don said, his voice turning ice-cold. "A brother who attempts to slaughter his own boss in his home is an abomination. Take him to the docks. Let the cold water clean his sins."

"Matteo! Matteo, please!" Damian begged as two burly enforcers dragged him toward the terrace doors. "We were brothers! Remember Brooklyn! Matteo!"

Matteo didn't turn around. He didn't utter a single word. He watched his former friend disappear into the darkness, closing that chapter of his life forever.

The room fell silent.

Don Bernardo stood up, leaning heavily on his cane, and looked at Matteo with profound respect. "You have purged the rot from your house, Matteo. The council recognizes you as the undisputed head of the Falcone family. But a house without an heir is always vulnerable. The wolves will return if you remain alone."

Matteo looked at the old patriarch. "My house is not empty, Don Bernardo. And my bloodline is secure."

Matteo turned toward the double doors of the private corridor.

"Sofia," Matteo called out gently.

The heavy doors opened.

Sofia walked into the grand hall. She had changed out of her torn, damp uniform into a simple, elegant dark wool dress provided by the estate staff. Her dark hair was neatly brushed, falling gracefully over her shoulders. She held little Mia by the hand.

Mia wore clean clothes, holding her green teddy bear under one arm, while her other hand clutched her mother's fingers tightly.

The five mafia bosses stared in absolute shock.

"This is Sofia Bennett," Matteo announced, his voice filled with an undeniable, fierce pride. "The widow of my brother, Luca Falcone. And this is Mia Falcone. My niece. The legitimate heir to the Falcone estate."

Mia looked up at the five imposing old men in suits. She showed no fear. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the heavy gold signet ring on its broken chain, and held it up for Don Bernardo to see.

Don Bernardo looked down at the child, then at the ring bearing the ancient Falcone crest. His weathered face softened, a genuine, warm smile breaking through his wrinkles.

The old Don slowly bent down on one knee before the little girl.

"Welcome home, little Falcone," Don Bernardo said with deep reverence. He looked up at Sofia, nodding respectfully. "Your family’s honor is restored, signora."
