Chapter 6 - THE RAT IN THE BASEMENT

The metallic screech of the bunker intercom filled the damp air of the root cellar.

Sofia pulled Mia tighter into her embrace, backing into the darkest corner of the stone room behind a stack of aged oak barrels. Mia didn't cry; she pressed her small face into her mother's chest, her tiny fingers holding onto the gold lighter Matteo had given Sofia earlier.

Matteo walked slowly toward the intercom unit mounted beside the reinforced steel door. He picked up the heavy black receiver, his expression completely impassive.

"You're making a lot of noise in my house, Damian," Matteo said smoothly into the mic.

A harsh, breathless laugh echoed from the speaker.

"I knew it!" Damian sneered, though the underlying panic in his voice was unmistakable. "The moment the security feeds died in the carriage house, I knew Sicily failed. You're like a cockroach, Matteo. You just won't stay dead."

"Where is Camilla?" Matteo asked, his tone deceptively casual.

"Standing right behind me," Damian answered. "Trembling in her designer slippers. She didn't think you'd make it back. But I told her—Matteo Falcone doesn't die in an Italian piazza. He comes home to burn everything to the ground."

"Then you know what happens next," Matteo said.

"I know the council is five miles away, driving through the estate gates right now," Damian countered, his tone hardening into pure malice. "And I know you have the maid and Luca’s little bastard down there in the cellar. Do you really think you can walk out into that courtyard alive? I have six men holding the dining hall with submachine guns. You step through that door, and we turn you and that little girl into red mist."

"You always were poor at mathematics, Damian," Matteo replied coolly. "You had twelve men. Six are dead in the carriage house and the gardens. Two are unconscious in the west wing. That leaves you with four scared mercenaries and a disgraced judge who can't hold his own rifle."

Silence hung over the line for three agonizing seconds.

"What did you do to my father?" Camilla’s voice suddenly shrieked over the intercom, shrill and hysterical, stripping away every shred of her former aristocratic composure. "Matteo! What did you do to him?!"

"Your father is alive, Camilla," Matteo answered coldly. "Sitting in the mud, waiting to tell the syndicate elders how the Rossi family sold out forty years of honor for twenty cents on the dollar."

"Matteo, listen to me!" Camilla cried, her voice cracking with desperation. "It was Damian! He threatened to kill me! He forced me to take the micro-drive from your desk! I love you, Matteo! I did this to survive!"

On the other side of the heavy door, a loud slap cracked through the speaker, followed by Camilla’s muffled sob.

"Shut your mouth, you lying bitch," Damian snarled at her. He returned his attention to the microphone. "Listen to me, Matteo. A trade. You give me the micro-drive and the little girl. In exchange, I let you and the maid take one of the cars and leave the country. You disappear forever. I take the syndicate."

Matteo glanced back at Sofia.

She was looking at him, her eyes wide with terror, but she shook her head slowly. She wasn't begging for her life; she was trusting him to protect her child.

Matteo looked back at the steel door.

"You forget who built this house, Damian," Matteo said softly. "My grandfather didn't just build escape tunnels for the staff. He built traps for the rats."

Matteo reached out and grabbed an iron lever recessed into the stone wall beside the bunker door—a manual hydraulic override that had remained untouched for eighty years.

With a heavy grunt, Matteo pulled the lever down.

A massive, deafening clatter of iron gears echoed through the foundation of the estate.

Upstairs, in the grand dining hall and the library, reinforced steel hurricane shutters slammed down over every single window and exterior doorway with the force of guillotine blades. The entire mansion was instantly transformed into a sealed concrete and mahogany tomb.

"What did you just do?!" Damian screamed over the speaker as the sound of alarms blared throughout the upper floors.

"I locked you in the cage with me," Matteo whispered.

He hung up the receiver and turned to Sofia. He pulled the family signet ring from his pocket and knelt down beside little Mia.

"Mia," Matteo said gently, taking her small hand. He placed the heavy gold ring into her tiny palm and closed her fingers around it. "This belonged to your father, and his father before him. It means you are a Falcone. And no Falcone ever bows to a coward like Damian Costa."

Mia looked at the heavy gold ring, her eyes shining with sudden wonder. "My Daddy had one of these."

"Yes, he did," Matteo said, his voice thick with a profound, sudden pride. "And he would be very proud of how brave you are tonight."

Matteo stood up and looked at Sofia.

"Stay behind the heavy barrels until you hear the council arrive," Matteo told her. "When the front doors open, you walk out holding Mia’s hand. Do not hide. Walk like you own this estate. Because after tonight, you do."

Sofia reached out, her fingers catching the lapel of his tactical vest. Her hazel eyes searched his dark, bruised face with an intensity that took his breath away.

"Come back to us," she said softly. "Don't die in there, Matteo."

Matteo looked down at her hand, then covered it with his own calloused palm. A faint, rare smile touched his lips.

"I have something to come back for now," he said.

He turned, grabbed his combat shotgun from the bunker rack, chambered a round with a loud, authoritative clack, and unlocked the inner door to the mansion.
