Chapter 9 - The Rescue That Nearly Destroyed the Moretti Family—And the Secret Hidden in a Mother's ConfessionThe rescue began at 10:47 p.m.

Anna waited inside a federal command vehicle parked several blocks from the marina.

Agent Donovan had insisted that she remain away from the immediate operation.

Lorenzo stood beside her.

His injured arm was wrapped beneath his coat.

He looked exhausted.

But his attention never left the screens.

One showed the marina.

Another showed the Moretti mansion.

Two teams.

Two locations.

Two women whose lives depended on decisions being made in real time.

Anna clasped her hands together.

"How long?"

Donovan checked her watch.

"We're waiting for confirmation that the hostages are inside."

Anna nodded.

She had stopped asking whether everything would be all right.

Nobody could promise that.

Instead, she concentrated on breathing.

In.

Out.

Again.

Lorenzo noticed.

He moved closer.

"Your mother is strong."

Anna looked at him.

"You don't know her."

"No."

He paused.

"But I know you."

Her throat tightened.

Before she could answer, a voice came through the radio.

"Marina team has visual confirmation."

Donovan straightened.

"Status?"

"One female hostage. Three armed suspects visible."

Anna gripped the edge of the table.

"Is it her?"

Donovan listened.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

Relief flooded Anna so suddenly that her knees weakened.

Lorenzo steadied her.

The operation unfolded quickly.

Federal agents secured the perimeter.

A negotiator contacted the people inside.

Matteo initially refused to surrender.

Then he demanded to speak with Anna.

Donovan looked toward her.

Anna shook her head.

"No."

The agent nodded.

"Understood."

Matteo called again.

This time, he threatened to move Elena.

But the agents had already blocked the exits.

Within minutes, two suspects surrendered.

A third attempted to flee and was arrested outside.

Matteo remained inside with Elena.

Anna watched the screen.

Her heart hammered.

Then the radio crackled.

"Hostage recovered."

Anna stopped breathing.

"Repeat?"

"Female hostage recovered. Conscious. Medical evaluation underway."

Anna covered her mouth.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

Lorenzo wrapped his uninjured arm around her.

She clung to him.

For a moment, she could do nothing but cry.

Her mother was alive.

After all the fear, all the uncertainty, all the terrible possibilities, Elena Bennett was alive.

But the operation wasn't finished.

Matteo had escaped through a maintenance corridor before agents secured the building.

Donovan immediately ordered a search.

Anna looked toward the second screen.

"What about Giulia?"

The mansion operation was still underway.

Adriano had barricaded himself inside the library with Giulia and Teresa.

He was demanding a vehicle.

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

His face had gone pale.

"Let me speak to him."

Donovan shook her head.

"Not yet."

"He's my uncle."

"He's also an armed suspect holding two hostages."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"I know how he thinks."

Donovan considered that.

Then she nodded toward the negotiator.

"One monitored call. You follow our instructions."

Adriano answered after several rings.

"Lorenzo."

His voice sounded almost affectionate.

"My boy."

Lorenzo closed his eyes briefly.

"Let Giulia and Teresa go."

Adriano laughed softly.

"You've always been sentimental."

"They have nothing to do with this."

"Everything has to do with family."

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

"Then act like family."

Silence.

Adriano's voice changed.

"You don't understand what your father built."

"I understand what you stole."

A sharp breath came through the line.

Lorenzo continued.

"I know about the accounts. The forged signatures. The agreement with Matteo."

"You know nothing."

"I know you arranged the death of Anna's father."

Adriano went silent.

Then he said, "That accountant was going to destroy everything."

"He was trying to stop you."

"He was trying to expose us."

"Us?"

Lorenzo's voice became cold.

"You mean you."

Adriano laughed bitterly.

"Your father benefited from every dollar."

"Then he should have faced the consequences too."

The answer seemed to surprise Adriano.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then his voice became quieter.

"You sound like him."

Lorenzo frowned.

"Who?"

"The accountant."

Anna looked toward the speaker.

Adriano continued.

"He thought honesty could save a corrupt world."

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

"And you killed him for it."

Another silence.

Then Adriano whispered, "I didn't kill him."

Anna went still.

Lorenzo leaned forward.

"What?"

"I ordered him brought in. I wanted the documents."

"Then what happened?"

Adriano's breathing became uneven.

"Matteo found him first."

Anna closed her eyes.

Her father's final moments had haunted her childhood.

For ten years, she had imagined countless possibilities.

Now the truth was emerging from the mouth of one of the men responsible.

Adriano continued.

"Your father tried to intervene."

Lorenzo froze.

"Salvatore?"

"He wanted the accountant released."

"What happened?"

Adriano's voice broke.

"Matteo threatened Sofia."

The room went silent.

Lorenzo looked toward Anna.

She shook her head slowly.

Sofia Russo.

The woman whose disappearance had supposedly started the entire conflict.

Adriano whispered, "She was alive."

Anna stepped closer to the speaker.

"Where?"

Adriano heard her.

"Anna."

His voice softened.

"You look so much like your father."

"Where is Sofia?"

He hesitated.

Then said, "Ask your mother."

The call ended.

Seconds later, agents reported that Giulia and Teresa had escaped through a rear hallway after Adriano released them.

Adriano surrendered shortly afterward.

Lorenzo sank into a chair.

His face was expressionless.

Anna stood beside him.

For the first time, she realized how much of his identity had been built around a family history that was now collapsing.

His uncle was under arrest.

His father had hidden terrible secrets.

His sister had been held hostage.

And the woman he cared about was discovering that their families had been connected by lies for decades.

Anna touched his shoulder.

"Giulia is safe."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"That's what matters tonight."

He looked up at her.

His eyes were dark with exhaustion.

"Your father deserved better."

Anna swallowed.

"So did yours."

Lorenzo shook his head.

"Maybe."

She knelt beside his chair.

"We don't have to decide that tonight."

He reached for her hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Donovan approached.

"Anna, your mother is asking for you."

Anna stood immediately.

"Where?"

"She's being transported to a hospital in Manhattan."

Anna turned toward Lorenzo.

He nodded.

"Go."

She hesitated.

"Come with me."

He looked surprised.

"Anna—"

"My mother knows something about Sofia Russo. And I don't want any more secrets."

Lorenzo rose.

Together, they followed Donovan out of the command vehicle.

An hour later, Anna entered her mother's hospital room.

Elena lay beneath a white blanket.

There was a small bruise near her temple.

But when she saw Anna, she smiled.

"Sweetheart."

Anna rushed to her.

They held each other for a long time.

Neither spoke.

There were no words large enough for the relief.

Finally, Elena pulled back.

She looked toward Lorenzo.

Her expression changed.

"Salvatore's son."

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"Mrs. Bennett."

Elena studied him.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"You look like your father."

Lorenzo said nothing.

Anna sat beside the bed.

"Mama, we need to know about Sofia Russo."

Elena closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she seemed to gather the courage to speak.

Then she said, "Sofia wasn't Matteo's victim."

Anna frowned.

"What?"

"She was his sister. But she was also the person who helped your father expose the stolen money."

Lorenzo moved closer.

"Where is she?"

Elena looked toward the window.

"She disappeared because we helped her escape."

Anna stared.

"We?"

Elena nodded.

"Your father. Salvatore. And me."

Anna felt the room shift.

Her mother had known more than she ever admitted.

"Where did she go?"

Elena swallowed.

"To a convent outside Florence. She changed her name."

Lorenzo looked at Donovan.

The agent was already making a note.

Anna took her mother's hand.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena's eyes filled.

"Because every person who knew the truth became a target."

Anna looked down.

For ten years, she had believed her mother was simply afraid.

Now she understood.

Elena had been carrying a secret that could destroy several criminal empires.

Lorenzo asked quietly, "Does Sofia know who killed Anna's father?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Anna's heart pounded.

"Then we need to find her."

Elena looked directly at her daughter.

"Anna, there's something else."

Her voice trembled.

"Your father left another document."

Anna stared.

"What document?"

May you like

Elena began crying.

"The one that proves who ordered his death."
