Chapter 7 - The Mafia King Walked Into the FBI's Office—And His Own Family Declared War on HimSpecial Agent Claire Donovan had spent eleven years investigating organized crime in New York.

During that time, she had interviewed informants, arrested violent offenders, and watched powerful men insist they were legitimate businessmen while their accountants quietly destroyed evidence.
But Lorenzo Moretti voluntarily walking into a federal office was something she had never expected.
He arrived at nine the following morning.
Anna walked beside him.
Leo remained outside with the security detail.
Donovan met them in a conference room overlooking Lower Manhattan.
She was in her early forties, with sharp blue eyes and a manner that suggested she disliked wasting time.
She looked at Lorenzo.
"Mr. Moretti."
"Agent Donovan."
"Last time we spoke, you told me to contact your attorneys."
"Today I'm here voluntarily."
"That makes me suspicious."
"It should."
Anna almost smiled.
Donovan turned toward her.
"And you are?"
"Anna Bennett."
"Relationship to Mr. Moretti?"
Anna hesitated.
"Complicated."
Donovan raised an eyebrow.
Lorenzo looked away.
The agent sat.
"Start from the beginning."
For the next two hours, Anna explained everything.
The Baccarat Hotel.
The meeting at Palma Club.
Vincenzo Russo's attempted ambush.
Her father's ledger.
The hidden apartment.
The trust.
Her mother's kidnapping.
Lorenzo provided names, financial records, and details about Adriano Bellini's access to company accounts.
Donovan listened without interrupting.
When they finished, she folded her hands.
"You understand what you're asking?"
Anna leaned forward.
"We're asking you to find my mother."
"And you're offering evidence against people who may be responsible for multiple federal crimes."
"Yes."
Donovan looked at Lorenzo.
"Including yourself?"
The room fell silent.
Lorenzo met her gaze.
"If the evidence establishes my responsibility for a crime, I won't ask you to ignore it."
Anna turned toward him.
She hadn't expected that.
Neither had Donovan.
The agent studied him for a long moment.
Then she said, "Cooperation isn't immunity."
"I know."
"And you don't get to negotiate your way out of everything you've done."
"I know that too."
Donovan leaned back.
"Good. Then perhaps we're finally having an honest conversation."
She called in two financial investigators.
They began reviewing the ledger and the digital files.
Within an hour, they discovered a series of transfers connecting Adriano Bellini to shell companies in Malta, Switzerland, and Delaware.
Several payments had been made shortly before Anna's father disappeared.
Another set corresponded with the disappearance of Sofia Russo.
But one transaction caught Donovan's attention.
A transfer made three days earlier.
Seven million dollars.
From an account controlled by Adriano Bellini to a company registered in the name of Matteo Russo.
Donovan pointed at the screen.
"That's recent enough to trace."
Anna leaned closer.
"Can you find where the money went?"
"We can try."
The agent looked toward her colleague.
"Get the financial intelligence team involved."
Then she turned to Lorenzo.
"There's another problem."
He nodded.
"My organization."
"Your uncle controls significant resources. If he realizes you're cooperating, he may retaliate."
"He already knows."
Donovan frowned.
"How?"
Lorenzo's phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
A message from an unknown number.
You have dishonored your father's name.
Beneath it was a photograph.
The Moretti mansion.
Its front gates stood open.
Two security vehicles were burning in the driveway.
Anna gasped.
"Giulia."
Lorenzo was already calling Leo.
"Get my sister out."
Leo answered immediately.
"Boss, we're on it."
"What happened?"
"Adriano's people breached the property. Security is holding the east wing."
"Where's Giulia?"
"With Teresa."
Lorenzo's face became rigid.
"Get them both out."
The line disconnected.
Donovan stood.
"What's happening?"
Lorenzo showed her the photograph.
"My uncle just attacked my home."
Donovan immediately began issuing instructions.
Within minutes, federal agents were coordinating with local law enforcement.
Anna stood near the window.
Her reflection looked unfamiliar.
Twenty-four hours earlier, she had been a hotel concierge.
Now she was standing in a federal building while the head of a criminal organization coordinated the evacuation of his own family.
She looked toward Lorenzo.
He was speaking quietly into his phone.
His injured arm was stiff.
His face was exhausted.
For the first time, she saw the weight beneath his authority.
The people who depended on him.
The mistakes he had inherited.
The decisions he could no longer avoid.
When he ended the call, Anna approached.
"Is Giulia safe?"
"Not yet."
She touched his uninjured arm.
He looked down at her hand.
Then at her.
"You're worried about her."
"Of course."
"You barely know her."
"She was kind to me."
Something softened in his expression.
"That matters to you?"
"It should matter to everyone."
Before he could answer, Donovan returned.
"We have a location connected to Matteo's latest transfer."
Anna turned.
"Where?"
"A private marina in Connecticut."
Lorenzo frowned.
"Matteo has property there."
Donovan nodded.
"We're coordinating a response. But we need to verify whether your mother is actually at that location."
Anna's hope faltered.
"How long?"
"I can't promise a timeline."
Anna looked away.
Midnight was approaching.
Matteo's deadline was less than fifteen hours away.
Lorenzo studied the map on the screen.
Then he noticed something.
"The marina isn't the destination."
Donovan looked at him.
"What?"
"It's a transfer point."
He pointed toward a warehouse beside the docks.
"That building belongs to a company Adriano uses for private storage."
Donovan examined the property records.
"You're certain?"
"Yes."
Anna leaned closer.
"What does he store there?"
Lorenzo hesitated.
"Documents. Art. Sometimes cash."
"People?"
He looked at her.
"I don't know."
Donovan turned toward her team.
"Request surveillance footage from the surrounding roads."
A few minutes later, an analyst entered.
"We have something."
On the screen appeared a grainy image of a dark van entering the marina property.
The timestamp was from the previous evening.
A woman stepped out between two men.
Her face was partially obscured.
But Anna recognized her coat.
The same navy wool coat she had bought her mother for Christmas.
Anna gripped the table.
"That's her."
Donovan nodded.
"We have a probable location."
Anna looked toward Lorenzo.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he reached for her hand.
"We're close."
She wanted to believe him.
But the day wasn't finished.
At three in the afternoon, another message arrived.
This one came from Adriano.
A video.
Giulia sat in a chair inside the Moretti mansion's library.
Her wrists were bound.
Teresa stood behind her.
Adriano appeared beside the fireplace.
He looked almost sorrowful.
"Lorenzo, my boy."
His voice was warm.
"You always were too emotional about the wrong people."
Lorenzo's expression went blank.
Adriano continued.
"You have until midnight to return home."
He glanced toward Giulia.
"Bring the accountant's daughter and the documents."
Then he smiled.
"Otherwise, your sister pays for your disobedience."
The video ended.
Anna stared at the screen.
Her mother was being held in Connecticut.
Giulia was being held in Manhattan.
Two hostages.
Two locations.
One deadline.
And the man standing beside her was being forced to choose between the woman who had saved his life and the sister he had spent his entire life protecting.
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
When he opened them, Anna saw something different.
Not anger.
Determination.
He turned toward Donovan.
"Now you understand why I came here."
The agent nodded.
"What do you want to do?"
Lorenzo looked at Anna.
May you like
Then back at Donovan.
"Save both of them."
