part 5: ELEANOR'S VISITOR

Prison changed Eleanor Ashford.

Not enough.

But visibly.

The expensive clothes were gone.

The perfect hair was gone.

The control was gone.

Yet the bitterness remained.

One morning a guard informed her she had a visitor.

Eleanor smiled for the first time in weeks.

Victoria.

It had to be Victoria.

Her stepdaughter would come eventually.

She always came back.

The guard opened the door.

A woman entered.

Not Victoria.

Emily.

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

Emily sat across from her.

For a full minute neither spoke.

Finally Eleanor laughed softly.

"So the lost princess visits the villain."

Emily remained calm.

"I came because I have questions."

Eleanor leaned back.

"And you think I owe you answers?"

"No."

Emily looked directly into her eyes.

"I think you owe yourself honesty."

The words landed harder than any accusation.

Eleanor looked away.

Emily continued.

"Why?"

Eleanor laughed.

"Money."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Silence.

"You could have stolen money without stealing a child."

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

For the first time uncertainty appeared.

Emily waited.

Then Eleanor whispered something she had never admitted aloud.

"Because your father loved you."

Emily blinked.

"What?"

Eleanor's eyes darkened.

"He loved both of you."

The bitterness in her voice was terrifying.

"He never loved me that way."

Years of jealousy poured out.

Not greed.

Not strategy.

Something uglier.

Something older.

Eleanor continued.

"When your mother died, I thought eventually I would become enough."

Emily sat frozen.

"But every room still belonged to her."

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

"Every conversation."

Every photograph.

Every memory.

Every child.

Emily finally understood.

The kidnapping had begun with money.

But it had been born from envy.

Eleanor had spent years competing against a dead woman.

And two little girls became casualties.

When Emily stood to leave, Eleanor spoke again.

"Do you hate me?"

Emily paused at the door.

Then she answered honestly.

"Not anymore."

Eleanor frowned.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I did for a very long time."

Silence.

"But hating you kept me trapped inside what you did."

She opened the door.

"And I'm done living there."

For the first time since her arrest, Eleanor looked truly alone.

Emily walked away.

Toward sunlight.

May you like

Toward family.

Toward a future Eleanor could never control again.
