part 4: THE WOMAN AT THE SHELTER

Emily rarely talked about the foster homes.

Victoria understood why.

Some memories survive because they are beautiful.

Others survive because they refuse to die.

One Saturday Emily invited Victoria to a community shelter she supported.

Victoria expected a donation event.

Instead she found thirty children eating lunch and laughing.

Emily knew every name.

Every birthday.

Every favorite cartoon.

The children ran toward her the moment she arrived.

"Miss Emily!"

"Miss Emily!"

"Look what I drew!"

Victoria watched quietly.

Something tightened inside her chest.

This was who Emily had become.

Not despite her pain.

Because of it.

Then Emily suddenly stopped walking.

Across the room stood an elderly woman.

Gray hair.

Thin frame.

Nervous eyes.

The moment she saw Emily, tears appeared.

Victoria looked between them.

"Who is she?"

Emily swallowed.

"My first foster mother."

The room became still.

Victoria's stomach dropped.

The first foster home had been one of the worst.

Emily had mentioned it only once.

Never again.

The woman approached slowly.

"I wasn't sure you'd come."

Emily remained silent.

The woman started crying.

"I need you to know something."

Victoria stepped closer.

The woman looked directly at Emily.

"I knew something was wrong."

Emily's expression changed.

The woman continued.

"The paperwork didn't make sense. The payments didn't make sense. I asked questions."

Emily stared.

"What happened?"

The woman lowered her head.

"They threatened to take you away."

Victoria felt cold.

"They said if I kept asking, I'd never foster another child again."

Emily closed her eyes.

Years of anger flashed across her face.

The woman whispered:

"I was a coward."

Nobody spoke.

Then she added:

"But I never stopped looking for you."

Emily's eyes filled.

The woman reached into her purse.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

A little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

Emily.

Age six.

The woman had carried the picture for fourteen years.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Praying.

Emily took the photograph.

For several seconds she couldn't speak.

Then she stepped forward.

And hugged her.

Not because everything was forgiven.

But because healing sometimes begins with truth.
