Chapter 20 - Breakfast AgainOne year later...

The dining room looked almost identical.
Fresh bread.
Fruit.
Coffee.
Eggs.
Pancakes.
The same breakfast table.
But this time...
There were no bruises.
No fear.
No shouting.
Only laughter.
My father flipped pancakes while my brother argued over coffee with my niece.
Charles arrived carrying flowers.
The detective stopped by before work.
Someone joked that Dad still overcooked the bacon.
Everyone laughed.
I looked at the empty chair where Oliver used to sit.
Then quietly carried it into the garage.
I didn't throw it away.
I donated it.
Just like I donated every reminder of the life I survived.
Dad placed a warm cup of coffee in front of me.
"You okay?"
I smiled.
May you like
"For the first time in a long time..."
"...I'm finally home."
