Chapter 6: The Confession on the Record

"What do you mean, Claire?" I asked, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Nathan and Evelyn are in holding cells. Julian is under arrest. What else is there?"

Claire took a deep breath, resting both hands over her stomach. "Your mother kept a safety deposit box at First National Bank under an assumed name: Margaret Holloway. It contains the audio recordings she used to blackmail the city inspectors and the crooked coroner who signed your father's false death certificate."

Dr. Morrison stepped forward, adjusting Claire’s IV line. "She's right, Ethan. Dr. Robert Vance—your uncle—was the coroner on duty three years ago. He signed off on the cremation without a toxicology screen because Evelyn threatened to expose his illegal prescription ring."

The web of corruption was staggering. My family hadn't just committed a crime; they had operated a miniature syndicate built entirely on fraud, coercion, and murder.

"Claire, you need to stay in this bed and rest," I insisted. "Let the district attorney handle the bank warrants."

"No," Claire said firmly, her eyes blazing with resolve. "I am giving my formal video deposition to the District Attorney right now, from this bed. I want every word on the official record before Evelyn's high-priced lawyers try to claim I was clinically incapacitated."

Within forty-five minutes, the hospital room was transformed into an official legal proceeding. District Attorney Sarah Martinez, a razor-sharp prosecutor known for taking down corporate cartels, arrived with a court stenographer and two detectives.

Claire sat upright against the pillows, her color slowly returning, looking directly into the camera lens mounted on a tripod at the foot of her bed.

"State your name for the record," DA Martinez instructed.

"Claire Marie Vance," she spoke clearly and steadily. "I am the lawful wife of Ethan Vance. Yesterday evening at approximately 4:15 PM, I entered the private study of the late Arthur Vance to retrieve archived corporate tax files. While doing so, I discovered an encrypted flash drive hidden behind the grandfather clock."

For the next thirty minutes, Claire methodically detailed everything she had witnessed over the preceding forty-eight hours.

She described walking into the kitchen to find Evelyn pouring a colorless liquid into her herbal tea. When Claire confronted her, Nathan had grabbed her from behind, pinning her arms while Julian injected a concentrated dose of veterinary paralytic into the base of her neck.

"They told me," Claire testified, her voice cracking slightly before regaining ironclad strength, "that Ethan would be devastated by my 'tragic sudden death,' but that within a few months, he would move on and sign over his father's remaining infrastructure rights to Nathan. They put me in that casket while I was completely conscious, unable to move a single muscle or scream."

DA Martinez’s jaw tightened with fury. Even the seasoned stenographer paused, visibly sickened by the testimony.

"Did they make any statements regarding the death of Arthur Vance?" Martinez asked.

"Yes," Claire replied. "Evelyn leaned over the casket before closing the lid and whispered: 'You're just like Arthur. You couldn't keep your nose out of business that wasn't yours. Now you'll share his fate.'"

"Thank you, Mrs. Vance," Martinez said, clicking off the recording device. "With this deposition, the physical evidence from the study, and the ballistics from Julian's firearm, I am filing aggravated attempted murder, premeditated first-degree murder, kidnapping, and treasonous corporate fraud charges against all three individuals without possibility of bail."

As the legal team packed up their equipment, DA Martinez turned to me. "Mr. Vance, we executed an emergency search warrant on First National Bank twenty minutes ago. We recovered the safety deposit box. It contains the original un-doctored will of your father, Arthur Vance."

"What does it say?" I asked.

"Everything—one hundred percent of Vance Construction, the real estate holdings, the family estate, and thirty-five million dollars in liquid assets—was left unconditionally to you and your direct heirs. Nathan and Evelyn were explicitly disinherited due to gross financial misconduct."

The weight of three years of lies, manipulation, and sorrow seemed to lift from my shoulders all at once. My father had never abandoned me. He had fought to protect me until his very last breath.

As Martinez walked out, Dr. Morrison re-examined Claire's monitors. A warm smile broke across his face.

"Well, parents," Morrison said, chuckling softly. "It seems your son is quite eager to meet the world after all this excitement. Claire, your contractions are becoming regular."

Claire gasped, clutching my hand as a tight wave washed over her abdomen. "Ethan... I think it's time."
