Chapter 5: The Darkness in the Halls

The emergency backup generators kicked in with a mechanical hum, casting the hospital corridor in an eerie, pale-yellow glow.

The steady beep-beep-beep of Claire’s fetal monitor stuttered as the power grid switched over.

Outside our room, a sharp scuffle broke out, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting the floor and the distinct sound of a suppressed gunshot.

Pfft. Pfft.

"Get down!" I hissed, shoving Dr. Morrison behind the supply cart and lunging across the hospital bed to shield Claire with my entire body.

"Ethan, what's happening?" Claire cried out, clutching my forearm in terror.

"Stay flat, don't move," I whispered, every combat instinct from my military medic deployment firing at once.

I scanned the room for a weapon. I grabbed a heavy stainless-steel IV pole, unscrewing the weighted base to turn it into a solid metal club.

The door handle slowly turned.

The door swung inward. A man stepped through, dressed in generic hospital orderly scrubs, a surgical mask covering the lower half of his face. In his right hand, he held a black semi-automatic pistol fitted with a carbon-fiber suppressor.

It wasn't a stranger.

Even with the surgical mask, I recognized the cold, hooded eyes and the snake tattoo curling up the right side of his neck: Julian Vance, our first cousin, and Nathan’s lifelong accomplice in every back-alley scheme they had ever run.

"Step away from the bed, Ethan," Julian said, his voice a low, raspy drawl. "You should have stayed overseas building your bridges. You're ruining a fifty-million-dollar buyout."

"You killed my father," I said, stepping between him and Claire, holding the steel pole angled toward his chest. "You tampered with his brakes after the thallium took too long."

Julian sneered behind the mask. "Uncle Arthur was an old fool who couldn't see that the world belongs to people who take what they want. Nathan and Evelyn promised me ten percent of the estate liquidations once your pretty wife was buried and you were out of the picture."

"You won't leave this hospital alive, Julian. The police are already downstairs."

"The police are busy with a coordinated fire alarm on the first floor," Julian smirked, raising the barrel of the pistol directly at my forehead. "By the time they make it up six flights of stairs, you'll be another tragic casualty of a home invasion follow-up."

He squeezed the trigger.

In that split second, I lunged forward, swinging the weighted steel pole with all the force in my torso.

The metal bar struck Julian’s right wrist just as the gun discharged. The bullet tore into the ceiling plaster, sending white dust raining down. Julian roared in pain as his pistol clattered across the linoleum floor.

I didn't give him a chance to recover. I drove my shoulder into his chest, slamming him against the heavy medical supply cabinets. Glass vials of medication shattered, raining onto our shoulders.

Julian pulled a tactical knife from his waistband with his left hand, slashing wildly at my throat. I dodged backward, feeling the blade graze the collar of my jacket, slicing the fabric open.

"Ethan!" Claire screamed from the bed.

Julian lunged again, aiming the knife at my gut.

I grabbed his wrist with both hands, twisting it violently downward using a standard military disarm technique. A loud snap echoed in the room as his joint gave way. Julian howled, dropping the knife.

I drove my knee hard into his midsection, followed by a sweeping right hook that connected squarely with his jaw. Julian’s head snapped back, and he crumpled to the floor, completely unconscious.

Dr. Morrison scrambled out from behind the cart, grabbing the discarded gun with a sterile towel and holding it with trembling hands. "Good Lord, Ethan! Are you alright?"

"Check Claire!" I gasped, breathing heavily as I zip-tied Julian’s wrists using heavy-duty medical cables from the wall unit. "Check the baby!"

Dr. Morrison immediately placed the ultrasound probe against Claire's belly. The room was silent except for our ragged breathing.

Then, the rhythmic, thunderous galloping sound of our baby’s heartbeat filled the room through the speaker: lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.

Claire let out a sobbing laugh, covering her face with her trembling hands. "He's okay... he's fighting, Ethan."

Heavy footsteps pounded down the hallway as four armed SWAT officers and the detective rushed into the room, their weapons raised.

"Clear!" I shouted, holding my hands up. "Suspect is subdued on the floor. Get forensics in here and bag this weapon."

The detective took in the scene—the shattered glass, the tied-up hitman, the bullet hole in the ceiling—and shook his head in disbelief. "We just intercepted Nathan's private transport en route to the airfield. We have him and your mother in custody. But we didn't know about Julian."

"Julian was the muscle," I said, wiping a mixture of sweat and drywall dust from my face. "He’s the one who staged my father's crash and injected Claire."

The detective knelt down, pulling off Julian’s mask. "He won't be seeing daylight for the rest of his life. Neither will Nathan or Evelyn."

I walked back to Claire’s bedside and sat down, pulling her into my arms. She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her tears wetting my shirt.

"It's over, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair. "The truth is out. The estate is safe, and nobody is ever going to hurt you or our son again."

Claire pulled back, looking into my eyes with fierce determination. "Not yet, Ethan. There is one more place we have to go before this is truly finished."
