Chapter 9 - What Comes After SurvivalThree months later, Vincent stood in a grocery store arguing about tomatoes.

Khloe watched from beside the shopping cart.

“These are terrible.”

“They’re tomatoes.”

“They’re refrigerated.”

“Yes.”

“That destroys the flavor.”

Khloe stared at him.

“You once controlled an international smuggling network.”

“Past tense.”

“And this is where you draw the line?”

Vincent held up a tomato.

“Standards matter.”

A woman pushing a cart recognized him.

Her eyes widened.

Vincent immediately put the tomato down.

Khloe laughed.

He frowned.

“What?”

“You’re embarrassed.”

“I’m not.”

“Vincent Costa is afraid someone will see him inspecting tomatoes.”

“I am not afraid.”

The woman passed.

Vincent waited.

Then quietly placed six tomatoes into the cart.

Khloe smiled.

This was what came after survival.

Not peace.

Peace was too simple.

Life after violence was maintenance.

Therapy Vincent pretended was “strategic consultation.”

Security protocols.

Court testimony.

Nightmares.

Locked doors.

Occasional mornings when Khloe woke and found Vincent standing beside the bedroom window at 4:00 a.m.

But there were also grocery stores.

Sunday breakfasts.

Gabriel visiting the estate and insulting Vincent’s cooking.

Isabella spending Thanksgiving with them.

Slowly, painfully, the Costa family was becoming something other than a crime scene.

Gabriel kept his stake in Costa Logistics.

But he abandoned the takeover.

Instead, Meridian and Costa announced a joint shipping venture.

Financial newspapers called it a strategic consolidation.

Khloe called it family therapy with quarterly earnings.

Vincent called it temporary.

Nobody believed him.

That evening, Khloe sat in Vincent’s study reviewing acquisition documents.

Vincent entered carrying two glasses of wine.

He placed one beside her.

“You’re working.”

“So are you.”

“I’m bringing wine.”

“That isn’t work.”

“It is when the bottle costs four hundred dollars.”

Khloe looked up.

“Why does it cost four hundred dollars?”

“Because it’s old.”

“So is Frank.”

Vincent laughed.

Khloe closed the laptop.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

Vincent sat across from her.

“I’ve been thinking.”

“That’s usually expensive.”

“Marry me.”

Khloe froze.

No ring.

No kneeling.

No candles.

No prepared speech.

Just Vincent.

Watching her.

Khloe blinked.

“That was terrible.”

His eyebrows drew together.

“What?”

“The proposal.”

“You understood it.”

“That is not the standard.”

“What standard?”

“The human standard.”

Vincent leaned back.

“I said marry me.”

“You sounded like you were ordering a shipment.”

“I was nervous.”

Khloe stared at him.

Vincent Costa.

Nervous.

That changed everything.

“You were?”

“Yes.”

“How nervous?”

“Khloe.”

“I need details.”

He stood.

Walked around the desk.

Then, with visible irritation at the entire ritual, lowered himself onto one knee.

Khloe covered her mouth.

Vincent removed a small box from his pocket.

“You already had the ring?”

“Obviously.”

“You planned this?”

“For six weeks.”

“And that was the speech?”

“I had a longer one.”

“What happened?”

“I forgot it.”

Khloe began laughing.

Vincent looked offended.

Then she started crying.

His expression immediately changed.

“Why are you crying?”

“Because you’re terrible at this.”

“That seems unnecessarily cruel.”

Khloe slid out of the chair and knelt in front of him.

She put both hands around his face.

Vincent looked suddenly uncertain.

The most feared man in the city.

A billionaire.

A former crime boss.

Terrified of one answer.

Khloe kissed him.

“Yes.”

His entire body relaxed.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

Vincent kissed her again.

The ring remained forgotten in his hand.

Eventually Khloe pulled away.

“You’re supposed to put it on me.”

“Right.”

He opened the box.

The ring was elegant.

A single diamond.

No absurd display.

Exactly her taste.

He slid it onto her finger.

Perfect fit.

Khloe stared at it.

“How did you know my size?”

Vincent looked uncomfortable.

“Frank.”

Khloe laughed again.

“You sent Frank to investigate my finger?”

“He has resources.”

“I’m marrying a lunatic.”

Vincent stood and pulled her against him.

“You knew that already.”

She rested her forehead against his chest.

His heartbeat was steady.

Safe.

Then Khloe remembered something.

“Oh.”

Vincent stiffened.

“What?”

“I forgot to tell you something.”

His suspicion appeared immediately.

“What?”

Khloe took his hand.

Placed it against her stomach.

Vincent stared.

Nothing happened.

His expression became confused.

Then understanding arrived.

Slowly.

Completely.

His face lost all color.

“Khloe.”

She smiled through tears.

“I found out yesterday.”

Vincent looked at her stomach.

Then her face.

Then her stomach again.

“You’re pregnant?”

“About seven weeks.”

He sat down abruptly.

Khloe burst out laughing.

Vincent Costa had survived gunshots.

Federal investigations.

Gang wars.

Betrayal.

His brother returning from the dead.

A seventy-two-year-old criminal mastermind.

Pregnancy defeated him in four seconds.

“Say something.”

Vincent looked up.

His eyes were wet.

“I don’t know how.”

Khloe’s laughter disappeared.

He touched her stomach carefully.

Almost reverently.

“My father was terrible.”

“You’re not your father.”

“What if I—”

“No.”

Khloe caught his face.

“You don’t inherit cruelty like eye color.”

Vincent swallowed.

“You choose.”

The same lesson Arthur Vale had never understood.

The same lesson Vincent had spent half his life learning.

He pulled Khloe against him.

Held her.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally Vincent whispered:

“I’m going to be a father.”

“Yes.”

“I need to childproof the estate.”

“The baby is currently the size of a blueberry.”

“The stairs are dangerous.”

“It cannot walk.”

“The pool.”

“Vincent.”

“The electrical outlets.”

“Vincent.”

“We have guns.”

“Those will obviously be secured.”

“The kitchen corners are sharp.”

Khloe kissed him to stop the list.

When she pulled away, he looked almost offended.

“We need a plan.”

Khloe smiled.

“Of course we do.”

Vincent rested his forehead against hers.

Outside, rain touched the windows.

May you like

Inside, the man who had once believed everything he touched turned to ash held his future beneath his palm.

And for once, he was not afraid to want it.
