Chapter 7 - The Woman They UnderestimatedBy noon, Khloe had built a map of Arthur Vale’s empire.

It covered an entire wall.
Companies.
Trusts.
Real estate.
Political donations.
Security contractors.
Shipping interests.
Every connection led somewhere else.
Vincent watched her work from across the room.
Gabriel watched too.
The brothers had spent most of their lives believing power came from intimidation.
Khloe understood something they did not.
Power was information organized correctly.
At 2:00 p.m., she found the weakness.
“Vale has a board.”
Vincent approached.
“What?”
“Bellweather Holdings isn’t entirely his.”
Khloe pointed toward a corporate structure.
“He controls forty-one percent.”
“Another thirty-four percent belongs to institutional investors.”
“And?”
“And those investors have morality clauses.”
Gabriel laughed.
“Khloe, institutional investors don’t have morality.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“They have liability departments.”
That stopped him.
Khloe continued.
“If we prove Vale used Bellweather resources to finance criminal activity, his own board removes him.”
Vincent shook his head.
“Too slow.”
“No.”
“You want to attack him.”
“Yes.”
“That is what he expects.”
Vincent stared at her.
Khloe stood.
“He built this entire plan around the assumption that you and Gabriel are still your father’s sons.”
Neither brother spoke.
“He provokes you.”
“You retaliate.”
“Gabriel retaliates against you.”
“Vale cleans up afterward.”
She looked at Vincent.
“So stop being predictable.”
Gabriel smiled.
“I really do like her.”
Vincent gave him a look.
Gabriel raised both hands.
“Professionally.”
Khloe almost laughed.
Almost.
Then her phone rang.
Isabella.
Gabriel answered immediately.
“Bella?”
His face changed.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“No.”
Gabriel went white.
“Isabella, listen to me.”
Vincent moved closer.
Khloe heard screaming through the phone.
Then a man’s voice.
Calm.
Older.
“Mr. Mercer.”
Gabriel stopped breathing.
“Arthur.”
Vincent’s head snapped toward him.
The voice continued through speakerphone.
“It has been a very long time.”
“Let her go.”
“I intend to.”
“Where?”
“When Vincent brings me what belongs to me.”
Vincent spoke.
“What?”
A soft laugh.
“Hello, Vincent.”
Vincent’s expression became stone.
“Tell me what you want.”
“The original Costa trust documents.”
“They were destroyed.”
“No.”
Arthur Vale sounded almost affectionate.
“Your father trusted paper more than computers.”
“He kept the originals.”
“And you know where.”
Vincent did.
Khloe saw it immediately.
“Bring them tonight.”
Vale gave an address.
An abandoned courthouse outside the city.
Midnight.
“One vehicle.”
“No police.”
“No Frank.”
“No Dom.”
“Vincent and Gabriel.”
The line disconnected.
Gabriel grabbed his coat.
Vincent caught his arm.
“Wait.”
“That’s my daughter.”
“I know.”
“You don’t know anything.”
Gabriel shoved him.
“You don’t have children.”
The words landed harder than intended.
Gabriel immediately looked toward Khloe.
Then away.
Vincent’s face became blank.
Khloe stepped between them.
“We are not going to the courthouse the way Vale expects.”
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“He has my daughter.”
“And if you walk into that building angry and unprepared, he’ll have you too.”
Gabriel’s eyes burned.
“What do you suggest?”
Khloe looked toward the corporate map.
“We destroy him before midnight.”
At 4:00 p.m., Bellweather Holdings received an anonymous package.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Internal emails.
Security contracts.
Evidence connecting company funds to kidnappings, arson, bribery, and corporate sabotage.
At 4:17, Bellweather’s general counsel called an emergency board meeting.
At 4:43, three institutional investors froze their voting agreements with Arthur Vale.
At 5:05, a major bank suspended Bellweather’s revolving credit facility.
At 5:31, federal regulators received documentation suggesting international money laundering.
At 6:10, the financial press began asking questions.
By 7:00, Bellweather stock was collapsing.
Arthur Vale called Vincent.
Vincent did not answer.
At 7:14, he called again.
No answer.
At 7:30, Vale sent a photograph of Isabella tied to a chair.
Gabriel nearly broke the dining table.
Khloe caught his wrist.
“He wants you emotional.”
“He has my child.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Khloe’s expression hardened.
“You’re right.”
She released him.
“I don’t.”
“But I know what it feels like to be afraid of losing the person you love.”
Her eyes moved toward Vincent.
Gabriel saw it.
His anger weakened.
Khloe continued.
“Vale’s organization is collapsing.”
“That makes him more dangerous.”
“But it also means people around him are starting to think about themselves.”
She held up her phone.
“His head of security just contacted me.”
Vincent frowned.
“What?”
“He wants immunity.”
Gabriel stared.
“How did you—”
“I offered money.”
“How much?”
“Two million.”
Vincent blinked.
“Of my money?”
“Our money.”
Khloe corrected him.
“And it worked.”
She displayed a building plan.
The abandoned courthouse.
Vale had twelve armed men.
Isabella was being held in the former records room.
There was a service tunnel beneath the eastern wing.
Frank smiled for the first time all day.
“That I can work with.”
At 11:38 p.m., two black SUVs stopped half a mile from the courthouse.
Vincent checked his handgun.
Gabriel loaded his.
Khloe wore a bulletproof vest beneath a dark jacket.
Vincent saw it.
“No.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What?”
“You’re staying in the vehicle.”
“No.”
“Khloe.”
“Do not use that voice.”
Gabriel looked between them.
“This is fascinating.”
Vincent ignored him.
“You are not going inside.”
“I designed the extraction.”
“Exactly.”
“So I’m going.”
“No.”
Khloe stepped closer.
“Vincent.”
His jaw tightened.
“I am your partner.”
“Yes.”
“Not your employee.”
“I know.”
“Not your possession.”
“I know.”
“Then stop trying to protect me by taking away my choices.”
The words struck him.
He looked at her.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Vincent closed his eyes.
“Stay behind me.”
Khloe nodded.
“That I can do.”
They moved toward the courthouse.
Rain began falling.
Again.
It seemed rain followed every moment that changed their lives.
At 11:57 p.m., Frank cut power to the eastern wing.
At 11:58, Dom entered through the service tunnel.
At 11:59, Gabriel and Vincent walked through the front doors.
Khloe followed in the darkness.
May you like
Midnight arrived.
And Arthur Vale discovered that the Costa brothers had not come alone.
