Chapter 9 - The Architect Burns Her Own EmpireAt 11:55 the following morning, every major financial network carried the same announcement.

CLARA MONTGOMERY TO ADDRESS GLOBAL CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS.

Clara stood backstage.

Dominic adjusted her microphone.

“You’re certain?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“That’s comforting.”

Dominic touched her face.

“You don’t have to sacrifice everything.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Clara.”

She looked at him.

“My father died protecting Meridian because he believed truth mattered more than his reputation.”

Her voice softened.

“I spent nine years rebuilding the reputation they stole from him.”

She looked toward the stage.

“Maybe this is why.”

At noon, Clara walked before the cameras.

Hundreds of journalists waited.

Millions watched.

“My name is Clara Montgomery.”

Flashbulbs erupted.

“During the last decade, I constructed an international network of financial companies operating under Vanguard Holdings.”

She paused.

“Today, I am dissolving it.”

Shock moved through the room.

Dominic watched backstage.

Clara continued.

“All financial records belonging to Vanguard will be made available to independent investigators.”

Jonathan’s threat depended on uncertainty.

So Clara eliminated uncertainty.

She opened everything.

Every account.

Every company.

Every transaction.

Including her own.

“If anyone believes I participated in illegal activity, investigate me.”

Reporters shouted.

Clara raised her voice.

“I will not ask the world to trust me.”

Silence returned.

“I will give the world the evidence necessary to decide for itself.”

Jonathan watched from an unknown location.

His plan began collapsing.

He released the false Meridian files.

But Clara was ready.

Independent cryptographic experts had already authenticated the original archive.

Jonathan’s modified version was exposed within seventeen minutes.

His network panicked.

Bank accounts froze.

Safe houses were raided.

Associates turned against him.

By sunset, only Jonathan remained missing.

Then Dominic received a call.

Leo’s voice.

“Dad?”

Dominic stood.

“Leo?”

Clara turned.

“Where are you?”

“I’m at school.”

Dominic looked at Vincent.

Leo was supposed to be home.

Vincent went pale.

The phone changed hands.

Jonathan.

“Your son is remarkably brave.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Again.

Jonathan had taken him from inside their security.

But this time his objective was different.

“Come to Pier 19.”

The line died.

Dominic reached for his weapon.

Clara stopped him.

“No army.”

“He has Leo.”

“That’s exactly why.”

She looked at him.

“This ends tonight.”

Pier 19 had been abandoned for years.

Clara and Dominic entered alone.

Jonathan stood beneath industrial lights.

Leo sat nearby.

Untied.

A pistol rested against his shoulder.

Jonathan smiled.

“The king and queen.”

Clara stepped forward.

“You lost.”

“Did I?”

“Yes.”

“You dissolved billions in assets.”

“I can rebuild.”

“You destroyed your reputation.”

“I survived worse.”

Jonathan’s smile faded.

“You really are extraordinary.”

“No.”

Clara looked at Leo.

“I’m a mother who wants her son.”

Jonathan pressed the gun closer.

“Then give me Dominic.”

Silence.

Dominic stared.

Jonathan smiled.

“The Falcone network survives.”

Clara understood.

“You want his ports.”

“Yes.”

“His political contacts.”

“Yes.”

“His organization.”

“Yes.”

Jonathan looked at Dominic.

“You die. Leo walks away.”

Dominic did not hesitate.

“Done.”

Clara turned.

“No.”

Dominic removed his weapon.

“Take Leo.”

“Dominic.”

“Take our son.”

Jonathan smiled.

Dominic placed the gun on the floor.

He walked forward.

Clara’s heart broke.

Nine years ago, Dominic had carried her from the snow.

Now he was walking toward death for her child.

Jonathan raised the gun.

Leo suddenly shouted.

“NOW!”

The warehouse lights died.

Vincent’s team emerged.

Jonathan fired.

Dominic lunged.

The bullet struck metal.

Clara ran toward Leo.

Jonathan and Dominic crashed to the floor.

Gunfire echoed.

Leo reached Clara.

She wrapped him in her arms.

Jonathan grabbed another weapon.

He aimed at Clara.

Dominic saw it.

He threw himself between them.

The shot exploded.

Dominic fell.

“NO!”

Clara screamed.

Vincent fired.

Jonathan dropped.

Silence.

Clara crawled toward Dominic.

Blood spread across his chest.

His eyes were closed.

“Dominic.”

Nothing.

She pressed both hands against the wound.

“Open your eyes.”

Nothing.

“Dominic Falcone, you do not get to die.”

Leo knelt beside her, crying.

“Dad.”

Dominic’s eyes opened slightly.

He looked at Leo.

Then Clara.

“You two…”

His breathing was weak.

“…are very loud.”

Clara laughed and sobbed simultaneously.

Sirens approached.

She kissed his forehead.

“Stay with me.”

May you like

Dominic managed a faint smile.

“Always.”
