Chapter 7 - The Woman Clara Once Called Her Best FriendVictoria had not fled to Paris because she feared Nathaniel’s collapse.

She had gone there because she had completed her assignment.

The truth rearranged nine years of Clara’s memories.

Victoria becoming her closest friend at Columbia.

Victoria introducing her to certain investors.

Victoria encouraging her relationship with Nathaniel.

Victoria standing beside Nathaniel while Clara went into labor.

Nothing had been accidental.

Clara stared at Isabella.

“How long?”

“Victoria joined the Circle before she met you.”

Clara’s voice became quiet.

“She was twenty.”

“Her father was a member.”

Dominic asked, “Where is she now?”

Isabella hesitated.

“Geneva.”

Of course.

Safe deposit box 417.

Victoria was waiting for Meridian.

Clara insisted on going.

Dominic insisted on going with her.

They arrived in Geneva under false identities.

Helix Private Bank occupied an eighteenth-century building near the lake.

No signs.

No public lobby.

Only old money and older secrets.

Clara presented the brass key.

The manager checked it.

His expression changed.

“Box 417 has not been accessed in eleven years.”

“Today it will be.”

They descended underground.

Three biometric checkpoints.

Two armed guards.

Then a private vault.

The manager left.

Clara inserted the key.

Click.

Inside was not a ledger.

Not a hard drive.

Not documents.

It was a music box.

Clara stared.

Dominic frowned.

“That’s Meridian?”

“No.”

Clara recognized it.

“My mother gave this to me.”

She opened the lid.

A small ballerina rotated.

Music played.

Clara removed the velvet lining.

Beneath it sat a tiny encrypted storage device.

Dominic smiled.

“Your father was clever.”

Clara inserted it into an isolated computer.

Password required.

She tried her father’s birthday.

Wrong.

Her mother’s.

Wrong.

Her own.

Wrong.

Then she remembered the dollhouse.

The first thing we built together.

She typed:

FOUNDATION.

Access granted.

Thirty-seven folders appeared.

Each contained names.

Payments.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Blackmail files.

Evidence.

Meridian.

Clara opened Robert Kincaid’s folder.

Bribes.

Judicial manipulation.

Offshore transfers.

Then she found Victoria Kensington.

Her folder was enormous.

Dominic read silently.

Victoria had spent fifteen years rebuilding the Circle.

Recruiting children of powerful families.

Using corporations instead of criminal syndicates.

Politicians instead of gunmen.

Social influence instead of street violence.

She had become more powerful than Nathaniel ever imagined.

Then Clara opened the final file.

Her own name appeared.

CLARA MONTGOMERY.

She stopped.

Dominic looked over her shoulder.

The file contained photographs spanning almost twenty years.

Clara at Columbia.

Clara with Nathaniel.

Clara pregnant.

Clara entering the Harrington penthouse.

Then photographs after her supposed death.

Clara leaving Dominic’s offices.

Clara visiting Leo’s school.

Clara sleeping beside a hospital bed when Leo had pneumonia at age four.

They had watched everything.

At the bottom was a document.

SUBJECT SUITABILITY: EXCEPTIONAL.

RECRUITMENT PRIORITY: HIGH.

Clara felt sick.

“They didn’t want to kill me.”

Dominic understood.

“They wanted you.”

A voice behind them said:

“Finally.”

Clara turned.

Victoria stood at the vault entrance.

Elegant.

Blonde.

Smiling.

Six armed men surrounded her.

“Hello, Clara.”

Dominic reached for his weapon.

“Don’t.”

Red laser dots appeared across his chest.

Victoria smiled.

“I have waited nine years for this conversation.”

Clara stood.

“You destroyed my father.”

“No.”

Victoria entered.

“Your father destroyed himself by refusing to understand the future.”

“You murdered him.”

“He was poisoned.”

Clara’s breath caught.

Victoria continued casually.

“Slowly. Digitalis. Very difficult to distinguish from cardiac failure in a man already under extreme stress.”

Clara wanted to kill her.

Dominic saw it.

Victoria saw it too.

“There she is.”

“What?”

“The woman I always knew you could become.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Nathaniel thought he created you by betraying you.”

She smiled.

“He was an idiot.”

Clara’s hands curled.

“I created you.”

“No.”

“I arranged your marriage.”

Clara stared.

“I arranged your father’s investigation.”

“No.”

“I encouraged Nathaniel to drain the trust.”

Clara’s breathing became shallow.

“And on the night Leo was born?”

Victoria’s smile vanished.

“That was Nathaniel improvising.”

For the first time, genuine anger appeared.

“He was instructed to remove you financially. Not physically.”

“You watched him throw me outside.”

“Yes.”

“You took my bracelet.”

“Yes.”

“You told me to freeze.”

Victoria tilted her head.

“I needed Nathaniel to believe I was loyal.”

Clara moved toward her.

Dominic caught her wrist.

Victoria smiled.

“You survived.”

“Barely.”

“And became magnificent.”

Victoria gestured toward the Meridian files.

“You built an empire. You destroyed Harrington. You became the Architect.”

She stepped closer.

“That was always the plan.”

Clara understood.

“You want me to join you.”

“I want you to lead us.”

Silence.

Victoria spread her hands.

“The Circle controls more wealth than several countries.”

“I’m supposed to be impressed?”

“You should be realistic.”

Victoria looked at Dominic.

“Falcone is powerful in New York.”

Then back at Clara.

“We shape governments.”

Clara smiled.

Victoria frowned.

“What is funny?”

“You made the same mistake Nathaniel made.”

“What mistake?”

“You think everyone wants what you want.”

Clara slowly removed the storage device.

Victoria’s guards raised weapons.

Clara held it between two fingers.

“You want Meridian?”

“Yes.”

“Take it.”

She dropped it.

Dominic moved.

The lights exploded.

Gunfire erupted.

Clara hit the floor.

Dominic fired.

Victoria’s men scattered.

Smoke filled the vault.

Clara crawled toward the storage device.

A hand reached it first.

Victoria.

Their eyes met.

For the first time in nine years, the two former friends faced one another without masks.

Victoria raised a pistol.

“You should have joined me.”

Clara kicked her wrist.

The gun slid away.

They fought.

Not elegantly.

Not cleanly.

Victoria slammed Clara against the vault.

Clara struck back.

Dominic shouted her name.

Then alarms screamed.

Swiss tactical police flooded the corridor.

Victoria froze.

Clara smiled through blood on her lip.

“You forgot something.”

“What?”

“I’m the Architect.”

Outside the bank, Clara had already transmitted the entire Meridian archive to six international law-enforcement agencies.

Victoria stared.

“You destroyed everything.”

“No.”

Clara watched officers approach.

“I exposed it.”

Victoria was dragged away screaming.

But before the doors closed, she shouted:

“You think this ends with me?”

Clara said nothing.

Victoria smiled.

May you like

“The Circle already chose your replacement.”

Then she disappeared.
