Chapter 7 - The Truth About Her FatherElena didn't speak to Marco for three days.

Not completely.

They communicated about Sofia.

School.

Dinner.

Schedules.

But nothing else.

She slept in her room.

He slept in the guest room.

Sofia noticed.

Children always noticed.

“Are you mad at Papa?”

Elena was making breakfast.

“No.”

“You're not talking.”

“We're talking.”

“About boring things.”

Elena looked at her.

“Sometimes grown-ups need time to think.”

“Did Papa do something bad?”

Elena stopped.

She crouched beside her daughter.

“Papa made mistakes a long time ago.”

“Like when I broke your vase?”

“Not exactly.”

“Did he say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Did you say okay?”

“Not yet.”

Sofia considered this.

“Then maybe you need more time.”

Elena smiled.

“Maybe.”

At school drop-off, Marco waited outside.

He didn't approach her.

He simply stood beside his car.

When Sofia ran to him, he crouched.

“Have a good day.”

“Are you and Mama okay?”

Marco looked at Elena.

“We're working on it.”

Sofia nodded.

“Okay.”

She hugged him.

Then she ran inside.

Marco walked toward Elena.

“I found something.”

She waited.

“Records from my father's office.”

“What kind?”

“Financial records.”

“And?”

“Your father's name appears.”

She felt something cold move through her.

“How?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Where are they?”

“In a storage facility in Seattle.”

“You kept them?”

“I didn't know they existed.”

“Then how did you find them?”

“Carmela remembered the location.”

Elena looked away.

“I want to see them.”

“Okay.”

“Today.”

“We can go.”

“No.”

He waited.

“I want to go alone.”

He nodded.

“Then I'll arrange the access.”

She looked at him.

“Thank you.”

He didn't say anything.

That afternoon, Elena drove north.

She hated the way the old world followed her.

She had built a life in flowers.

Yet here she was, walking into a storage facility because a dead man's financial records contained her father's name.

Inside a sealed box, she found a folder.

Her father's handwriting was on the cover.

She recognized it instantly.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

There were numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Then one photograph.

Her father.

Marco's father.

And another man.

Adrian.

All three standing together.

Elena stared at the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, the girl must never know.

The girl.

Her.

She read the sentence again.

There was another line.

She has nothing to do with this.

Then another.

Protect her.

Elena sat on the concrete floor.

Her father had known.

He had known about Marco's family.

He had known about Adrian.

He had known Elena might become involved.

And he had tried to keep her away.

She turned another page.

There was a transaction record.

A large payment.

Then a second.

Then a third.

At the bottom of the final page was a signature.

Her father's.

And beneath it:

Debt settled.

Elena didn't understand.

If the debt had been settled, why had her father still been afraid?

She called Marco.

“I found something.”

“I'll come.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I need you to listen.”

“I am.”

“My father wasn't indebted to your family.”

Marco was silent.

“He was working with them.”

“I know.”

She froze.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“When?”

“Recently.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't certain.”

She closed her eyes.

“You keep doing this.”

“I know.”

“You keep deciding what I can handle.”

“I know.”

“I'm starting to hate that sentence.”

“I know.”

She almost laughed.

Almost.

“What did my father do?”

“He moved money.”

“For whom?”

“My father.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Then find out.”

“I will.”

She looked at the photograph.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“Adrian was there.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at the photograph again.

“He wasn't just there.”

“What?”

“He was standing beside my father.”

Marco went silent.

Elena continued.

“They knew each other.”

“I didn't know that.”

“Then maybe that's why he remembers me.”

A pause.

“Maybe.”

She looked at the photograph.

There was something wrong.

Something she hadn't noticed.

Adrian wasn't looking at the camera.

He was looking at her father.

And her father wasn't looking at him.

He was looking at the photographer.

As if he knew the photograph would someday matter.

Elena turned the photograph over.

There was another sentence.

Smaller.

Almost hidden beneath the original note.

If Elena ever meets Marco, tell her the truth.

Her breath stopped.

She read it again.

Then again.

The room seemed to disappear.

Her father had known.

He had expected them to meet.

Maybe he had even known they would fall in love.

And he had wanted her to know the truth.

Only nobody had told her.

Not her father.

Not Marco.

Not Carmela.

Everyone had decided silence was protection.

She laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“All of you,” she whispered.

She gathered the papers.

Then she stood.

When she returned to Portland, Marco was waiting outside the house.

He didn't ask questions.

He simply opened the door.

She walked inside.

Then placed the folder on the table.

“Read.”

He did.

Page by page.

His face became increasingly pale.

Finally, he reached the last note.

He looked at Elena.

“Your father knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about us.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted you to know.”

“Yes.”

Marco sat down.

Elena remained standing.

“I need you to answer one question.”

“Anything.”

“Did you ever know that my father wanted us to meet?”

“No.”

“Did your father?”

“I don't know.”

“Did Adrian?”

“I don't know.”

She stared at him.

“Then find out.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

She sat opposite him.

“For the first time in my life, Marco, I don't want protection.”

He looked at her.

“I want the truth.”

“You'll have it.”

“Even if it destroys everything?”

He held her gaze.

“Especially then.”

She nodded.

That night, they sat at the kitchen table until three in the morning.

They went through every document.

Every name.

Every date.

Every transaction.

And slowly, a pattern emerged.

Her father had been moving money through Marco's family's network.

But he wasn't stealing.

He was hiding it.

Money belonging to someone else.

Someone named Gabriel Leone.

A man whose name Marco recognized.

And when he did, his face changed.

“Who is he?” Elena asked.

Marco looked at her.

“My father's oldest enemy.”

“Dead?”

“I thought so.”

“You thought?”

“Yes.”

He looked at the documents again.

“He disappeared fourteen years ago.”

The exact year Elena met Marco.

She felt cold.

“Why would my father hide his money?”

Marco didn't answer.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Tell Elena her father didn't betray me.”

Marco went completely still.

The voice continued.

“He saved my life.”

Then the call ended.

Elena stared at him.

“Who was that?”

May you like

Marco slowly lowered the phone.

“Gabriel Leone.”
