Chapter 8 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be DeadGabriel Leone wanted to meet at dawn.

Marco didn't like that.

Elena didn't care.

They drove to an old church outside the city.

No agents.

No security visible.

Vargas had insisted on a team nearby, but Elena refused to know where they were.

She wanted one conversation without someone else controlling it.

The church was empty.

The doors were open.

A man sat in the last pew.

He was older than Elena expected.

Perhaps sixty.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

A cane beside him.

He turned when they entered.

His eyes went directly to Elena.

For a moment, he looked devastated.

“You have your father's eyes.”

Elena stopped.

“You knew him?”

“I knew him better than anyone.”

“What was he to you?”

“Friend.”

She waited.

“Enemy.”

She frowned.

“Which?”

“Both.”

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“Life is rarely one thing.”

Marco remained standing.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“I was.”

“That's not an answer.”

“I disappeared. People assumed death because it was easier.”

“Why?”

Gabriel looked at Elena.

“Because your father saved me.”

“How?”

“He knew Adrian was planning to kill me.”

Elena felt her pulse quicken.

“He warned you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father had discovered something.”

“What?”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“Your father wasn't moving my money.”

He looked at Marco.

“He was moving evidence.”

Marco went still.

“Evidence of what?”

“Adrian's crimes.”

Silence.

Elena sat down.

“My father was working against Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“But he worked with your family.”

“He worked with both sides.”

“To stop a war?”

Gabriel nodded.

“He believed if he could prove what Adrian was doing, he could remove him without bloodshed.”

Marco closed his eyes.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he allow Adrian to stay?”

“Because your father wasn't powerful enough.”

Gabriel's voice was quiet.

“And neither was mine.”

Elena looked at him.

“What happened?”

“Your father took the evidence.”

“Where?”

Gabriel smiled.

“He gave it to you.”

Elena frowned.

“I was twenty-four.”

“You didn't know.”

“What did he give me?”

“Nothing physical.”

She waited.

“He gave you a memory.”

Her face tightened.

“What memory?”

“The day you met Marco.”

She stared.

Gabriel continued.

“Your father knew Adrian was watching him. He knew Marco was being sent to retrieve information. He knew that if Adrian discovered the evidence, people would die.”

“So he arranged for me to meet Marco?”

“Not exactly.”

Gabriel looked at Marco.

“Your father sent Marco to the café because he knew you would be there.”

Marco stared.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't know until years later.”

Elena looked between them.

“My father wanted me to meet him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Marco was the only person in his family he believed could become something different.”

The words landed hard.

Marco looked away.

Gabriel continued.

“Your father believed you would change him.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“That sounds convenient.”

“It wasn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because your father told me.”

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

Elena's breath stopped.

“You knew he was going to die?”

“No.”

“Then what did he say?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“He said, ‘If I don't make it, she will need someone who understands both worlds. Tell her she was never the debt. She was the reason I wanted the debt settled.’”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her father had spent his final years trying to protect her from something she hadn't even known existed.

“What happened to him?”

Gabriel looked at Marco.

“Ask him.”

Elena turned.

Marco's face was pale.

“What?”

“My father.”

Marco swallowed.

“I was there.”

The world stopped.

“You were there?”

“The night your father died.”

Elena stood.

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I didn't know who he was to you.”

“You knew my name.”

“I didn't know your father was the man I had been sent to meet.”

She stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

“Then how?”

Marco's voice broke slightly.

“I arrived after.”

He took a breath.

“Your father had already been shot.”

Elena's knees weakened.

Marco stepped forward.

She held up a hand.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“He gave me something,” Marco said.

“What?”

“A photograph.”

Her breath caught.

“What photograph?”

“The same one you found.”

She looked at the folder.

“You had it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I kept it for fourteen years.”

“Why?”

“Because your father told me something.”

“What?”

Marco's eyes filled.

“He said, ‘If you ever see my daughter again, don't tell her I was a good man.’”

Elena couldn't breathe.

“He said, ‘Tell her I was a man who tried.’”

Tears ran down her face.

“And?”

“He said, ‘And if she hates me, let her.’”

Silence.

Elena sat down.

For fourteen years, she had believed her father's death was simple.

An accident.

A heart attack.

A life that ended without explanation.

Now she discovered it had been connected to a hidden war.

And Marco had been there.

He had known part of it.

He had carried the photograph.

And somehow, despite everything, he had never told her.

She looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because by the time I understood who you were, I loved you.”

She closed her eyes.

“And you thought the truth would make me leave.”

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

“That sounds familiar.”

He lowered his head.

Gabriel stood.

“There is one more thing.”

Elena looked up.

“What?”

“Adrian didn't kill your father.”

“Who did?”

Gabriel's face was grim.

“No one knows.”

“What?”

“He was shot, but the person who ordered it was never identified.”

Marco stood.

“That's impossible.”

“It isn't.”

“Then why did you say Adrian?”

“Because Adrian benefited.”

Elena felt a new fear.

“Then who ordered it?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“I don't know.”

A long silence.

“But I know who does.”

“Who?”

Gabriel pointed toward the door.

Someone stood outside.

A woman.

Elena recognized her immediately.

Valentina Castellone.

She entered slowly.

Marco's body went rigid.

“What are you doing here?”

Valentina looked at Elena.

“I came to tell you that your father didn't die because of Marco's family.”

May you like

She looked at Marco.

“He died because of mine.”
