Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

Instead of fleeing the country or going back into hiding, Mariana made a brilliant, calculated move that completely paralyzed the Salcedo legal team.

She didn't hide in the shadows; instead, she drove the van straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in the heart of Washington, D.C.

To ensure her safety, Sofia initiated a live-stream to her millions of high-society followers, broadcasting their entire journey and arrival live.

With over eighty million people watching the live broadcast simultaneously, the Salcedos could not assassinate her or pay off the federal agents without triggering a literal revolution.

Mariana walked up the steps of the FBI building in broad daylight, holding her son’s hand, flanked by federal protection.

The subsequent arrest of Rodrigo and Victoria Salcedo was a historical media event. Television networks broadcasted live footage of the FBI raiding the Rhode Island mansion.

The image of Rodrigo, his proud aristocratic posture shattered, his iconic burgundy velvet blazer replaced by a rumpled, standard suit jacket as handcuffs were slapped onto his wrists, shocked the global elite.

The trial that followed was dubbed the "Trial of the Century." The Salcedos spared no expense, hiring an army of the most ruthless, high-priced defense attorneys in the world.

The legal team attempted a desperate strategy: they argued that the digital cloud footage was a highly sophisticated, AI-generated deepfake manufactured by rival international shipping conglomerates desperate to destroy the Salcedo market dominance.

The courtroom was suffocatingly tense. For the first two weeks, the defense seemed to be successfully swaying the jury, using expensive, paid technical consultants to inject doubt into the digital chain of custody of the cloud backup.

On the fifteenth day, Mariana took the witness stand. She sat tall, looking directly at her parents. Her mother, Victoria, refused to meet her gaze, staring blankly at the defense table.

But her father, Rodrigo, stared directly at her, his eyes still burning with a cold, unrepentant arrogance that said I am still untouchable.

"Your Honors," Mariana’s lead federal prosecutor announced, standing up. "The government calls a surprise rebuttal witness:

Dr. Klaus Vance, the chief developer of the Swiss hardware firm that built the yacht's security system. He has just flown in from Zurich with the immutable, hardware-level blockchain logs."

The defense attorneys jumped to their feet, screaming furious objections, but the federal judge sternly overruled them.

The Swiss expert took the stand and systematically dismantled the defense's deepfake argument.

He proved mathematically and technically that the security file was sealed with an immutable, decentralized blockchain hash the exact millisecond it was recorded.

It was physically impossible to alter, fake, or edit. Furthermore, the file's internal metadata timestamp matched to the exact microsecond the yacht’s black box recorded an abrupt, emergency deceleration in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The prosecutor turned to the courtroom security officer. "Play the full, uncompressed file."

The monitors lit up. For the first time, the world saw the entire, horrific event in high-definition audio and video.

The courtroom fell into a dead, terrified, horrified silence as the sounds of Mariana's desperate screams and Nico’s crying echoed through the speakers, followed by the sickening splash of the water.

Suddenly, Victoria broke down completely. Her aristocratic composure shattered into a million pieces. She turned on her husband, screaming hysterically, "It was his idea!

Rodrigo told me she found the offshore shell accounts! He told me we had to get rid of her! He forced me to do it!"

Rodrigo simply closed his eyes slowly, his face turning an ashen gray. The grand Salcedo empire had officially collapsed into dust.
