The Name No One Expected

"There is someone you haven't considered."
Richard's words hung in the air.
Ethan stared at his father, searching his face for even the smallest sign of deception.
"What does that mean?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. His reflection floated against the glass, older than Ethan had ever remembered him looking.
Victoria spoke first.
"Richard..."
He raised one hand, asking her to stop.
"No," he said quietly. "We've kept this buried long enough."
Claire looked up, confusion replacing fear.
"I don't understand."
Richard turned to face them.
"Neither your mother nor I ever laid a hand on you."
Ethan's expression didn't soften.
"Then explain the bruises."
"I can't."
Richard's voice carried something unfamiliar.
Regret.
"But I know why they happened."
Ethan took a step forward.
"Start talking."
Richard drew a slow breath.
"Three months ago, someone began sending anonymous messages to this family."
Claire frowned.
"What messages?"
"They knew details no outsider should have known."
He looked at Ethan.
"Your travel schedule."
"The baby's medical appointments."
"The layout of this penthouse."
"Even which security guards were on duty."
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"You never told me."
"We believed they were empty threats."
"You decided that without asking me?"
Richard didn't answer.
Victoria wiped a tear from the corner of her eye.
"We were trying to protect you."
Ethan laughed once.
It wasn't humor.
It was disbelief.
"You protected me by hiding threats against my pregnant wife?"
Silence answered him.
Claire slowly shook her head.
"No..."
Her voice trembled.
"It wasn't anonymous."
Everyone looked toward her.
She swallowed hard.
"I saw him."
The room became still.
Ethan immediately knelt beside her again.
"You saw who?"
She closed her eyes.
"Only once."
"Where?"
"In the underground garage."
"When?"
"The night you flew to London."
Ethan searched his memory.
That trip had lasted only two days.
Claire had insisted she didn't need to come to the airport.
"I was getting into my car," she continued.
"He walked past me."
"What did he look like?"
Claire hesitated.
"I never saw his whole face."
"Anything."
"There was..."
She pressed two fingers against her temple.
"...a scar."
"Across his neck."
Richard's eyes widened.
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
Ethan noticed both reactions instantly.
"You know exactly who she's describing."
Neither parent denied it.
Instead, Richard walked to the bedside table and opened a drawer Ethan had never seen him touch before.
From inside, he removed a faded photograph.
Its edges were worn from age.
Richard held it for several seconds before placing it into Ethan's hands.
The picture showed three people standing in front of the original family estate nearly thirty years earlier.
Richard.
Victoria.
And another man.
He looked almost the same age as Richard, with dark hair, a sharp jawline...
...and a long scar running down the left side of his neck.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
"Who is this?"
Richard's shoulders sank.
"My younger brother."
Ethan looked up.
"I've never heard you mention a brother."
"You weren't supposed to."
"Why?"
Richard's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Because twenty-six years ago..."
He struggled to finish the sentence.
"...we buried him."
Claire's eyes widened.
"But I saw him."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"Then either someone is pretending to be him..."
He paused, unable to hide the fear in his own eyes.
"...or the greatest mistake of my life never stayed buried at all."
The photograph slipped slightly in Ethan's hand.
For the first time that night, the mystery was no longer confined to the walls of the penthouse.

It reached back decades into the Mercer family's past.
And whatever had begun long before Ethan met Claire had now returned for the child they were about to bring into the world.
