Chapter 9 - Seven Minutes to MidnightElena Moretti ran through darkness.

The underground tunnel narrowed until her shoulders almost brushed the brick walls.

Her lungs burned.

Her boots slammed against wet stone.

Ahead, emergency lights glowed faintly.

Behind her, Chicago was preparing to become the center of an intelligence catastrophe.

00:11:46.

She checked the timer.

Too slow.

Elena accelerated.

For seventeen years, she had trained herself not to think about Dante.

Not as a brother.

Not as a child.

Not as the little boy who used to hide beneath her bed during thunderstorms.

Kane had taught her that attachment was weakness.

Father had taught her that families lied.

The Directorate had taught her that people were assets.

But Dante’s hand gripping her wrist had destroyed seventeen years of training with four words.

You come back.

She hated him for it.

She loved him for it.

That was worse.

At the courthouse, Sienna fired until her pistol locked empty.

“Reloading!”

Kane moved beside her, firing controlled bursts.

The Directorate team had lost nine operators.

More kept coming.

Dante sat against the judge’s bench, one hand clamped against his chest.

Blood soaked his fingers.

Sienna slid beside him.

“Let me see.”

“It’s still there.”

“That isn’t medically useful.”

She pulled his hand away.

The bullet had passed through the upper chest near the shoulder.

Heavy bleeding.

But no bubbling around the wound.

Probably missed the lung.

Probably.

“You’re lucky.”

“I own casinos.”

“Not how biology works.”

She packed gauze into the wound.

Dante hissed.

“You enjoy that.”

“A little.”

He smiled weakly.

“You’re beautiful when you’re violent.”

“You’re delirious.”

“Possibly.”

Nero shouted through comms.

“Five relays offline!”

Sienna looked at Kane.

“Two remaining.”

“University and Moretti.”

Nero said, “University in thirty seconds.”

Gunfire cracked.

Sienna returned fire.

Then the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the courtroom.

Kane cursed.

“Night optics!”

Red lasers appeared.

Directorate operators.

Sienna grabbed Dante by his vest and pulled him behind a stone column.

Bullets tore apart the bench.

“They have thermal!”

Dante drew his backup pistol.

“So?”

“So they can see us.”

“Unfortunate for them.”

He fired toward the lasers.

A man screamed.

Sienna stared.

“You can shoot in the dark?”

“I practice.”

“Of course you do.”

Emergency lights flickered.

Kane was gone.

Sienna immediately noticed.

“Kane!”

No answer.

Her instincts screamed betrayal.

Dante saw her expression.

“What?”

“He disappeared.”

“Again, unsurprising.”

Then the console alarm sounded.

Sienna turned.

Kane stood beside it.

He held the hard drive.

Her heart dropped.

“Put it down!”

Kane looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Dante aimed.

“I’m becoming tired of people saying that tonight.”

Sienna moved forward.

“Kane.”

“You don’t understand.”

“That sentence stopped working years ago.”

He inserted the drive into a separate slot.

Sienna realized.

“You’re activating it.”

Kane’s face twisted.

“I built Orpheus.”

“You said you wanted to destroy it.”

“I wanted the Directorate destroyed.”

Dante understood.

“You’re going to release the files.”

Kane looked at him.

“If every government and criminal organization receives the archive, the Directorate cannot hide.”

“Millions could die.”

“Thousands.”

Sienna stared.

He corrected himself clinically.

“Possibly tens of thousands.”

Her stomach turned.

“You knew.”

“There is no clean solution.”

“There is always a choice.”

“Yes.”

Kane pressed his hand toward ACTIVATE.

“This is mine.”

Sienna fired.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Kane spun.

The drive remained connected.

He looked at her with shock.

“You shot me.”

“You taught me to.”

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

“Good.”

Then he pulled a pistol.

Dante fired first.

Kane fell behind the console.

Sienna ran forward.

The activation screen remained open.

00:07:58.

Nero shouted.

“University relay down!”

Six.

Only Moretti Tower remained.

Sienna crouched beside Kane.

He was alive.

Barely.

He looked up at her.

“You became better than I hoped.”

“You ruined my life.”

“I gave you one.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You gave me a weapon and called it a life.”

Kane looked toward Dante.

“And him?”

Sienna glanced at Dante.

He was watching her.

“He reminded me I could choose one.”

Kane smiled faintly.

“Then perhaps I did one thing right.”

“No.”

Sienna stood.

“That was me.”

She left him bleeding.

In the tunnel beneath Chicago, Elena reached the sealed access beneath Moretti Tower.

00:06:41.

She entered a code.

Denied.

Again.

Denied.

“Kane!”

She struck the keypad.

Nero’s voice entered.

“Elena?”

“Yes.”

“I can see you on internal sensors.”

“Open the door.”

“I can’t. Antonio’s security protocol.”

“Can Dante?”

“He’s twelve blocks away bleeding.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Other entrance?”

“Seventy feet above you.”

She looked up the maintenance shaft.

No ladder.

Only pipes.

“Fine.”

Nero understood.

“You’re not climbing that.”

“Watch me.”

She jumped.

Grabbed a pipe.

Pulled herself upward.

At the courthouse, Directorate gunfire suddenly stopped.

Sienna looked around.

Too quiet.

Dante felt it too.

“They’re retreating.”

“No.”

Sienna checked thermal movement.

Operators were moving toward exits.

Kane laughed weakly from the floor.

“They know.”

“Know what?”

“They don’t need to kill us anymore.”

Sienna looked at the timer.

00:05:02.

“They think Elena won’t make it.”

Kane smiled.

“She won’t.”

Dante dragged himself upright.

Sienna caught him.

“Sit down.”

“My sister will make it.”

Kane shook his head.

“The tower relay is protected by Isabella protocol.”

Dante froze.

“What?”

“Your mother designed the lock.”

Sienna stared.

“What opens it?”

Kane looked at Dante.

“Family voice authorization.”

Dante pulled out his phone.

“No signal.”

The Directorate had jammed the building.

Sienna grabbed Kane.

“What phrase?”

“I don’t know.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Childhood.

Mother.

A hidden phrase.

Something Isabella had taught him.

He whispered.

“When the lights go dark…”

Sienna looked at him.

“What?”

“My mother used to say it during storms.”

Elena had hidden beneath the bed with him.

Dante remembered.

“When the lights go dark, what stays?”

He looked at Sienna.

“Family.”

Nero heard.

“I’ll relay it to Elena.”

In the shaft, Elena was forty feet up.

Her hands bled.

Nero spoke in her ear.

“Dante says your mother had a phrase.”

Elena stopped climbing.

“What phrase?”

“When the lights go dark, what stays?”

Her eyes closed.

Memory exploded.

Thunder.

A candle.

Her mother wrapping blankets around two children.

Dante’s tiny hand holding hers.

Elena whispered.

“Family stays.”

A panel above her clicked.

A hidden access hatch opened.

She laughed.

Half sob.

Half disbelief.

She climbed.

00:03:12.

She emerged inside the hidden forty-seventh floor chamber.

The relay server glowed red.

A scanner activated.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Elena approached.

“When the lights go dark…”

Nothing.

She swallowed.

“What stays?”

Scanner waiting.

“Family stays.”

DENIED.

Elena stared.

“No.”

Nero panicked.

“What happened?”

“Denied.”

At the courthouse, Dante heard.

His face changed.

Sienna grabbed his arm.

“Another phrase?”

“I don’t know.”

Kane whispered.

“Isabella never trusted words.”

Sienna turned.

“What?”

“Words can be recorded.”

She understood.

“Biometric voice plus something else.”

Dante remembered his mother’s necklace.

A lullaby.

A fingerprint?

Elena touched the console.

A small circular indentation.

Ring-shaped.

Dante suddenly said:

“Her ring.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“Mother’s wedding ring.”

“I don’t have it.”

Dante looked at his hand.

His signet ring.

Antonio had given it to him after Isabella died.

He removed it.

Inside was another ring.

A thin gold band hidden beneath the Moretti crest.

Sienna stared.

“Your father built it into your ring.”

Dante closed his eyes.

He could not reach Elena.

Two minutes.

Sienna looked at the architecture plans on the console.

Tunnel route.

Pneumatic security transfer system.

Old documents had been moved between floors through pressure tubes.

“Nero.”

“Yes?”

“Does the hidden floor have archive delivery?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

“Can we access it from the courthouse?”

“No.”

Dante looked toward the Gilded Cage tunnel map.

But Luca’s SUV.

Courier drone?

Nero suddenly shouted.

“The tower has an old pneumatic vault network connected to the club!”

Sienna grabbed Dante’s ring.

“Luca!”

His voice entered.

“Here.”

“Get to the Gilded Cage basement. Now.”

“I’m six blocks away.”

“Drive faster.”

00:01:49.

Luca’s SUV tore through Chicago.

Traffic lights ignored.

Horn screaming.

He hit the nightclub entrance with fifty-nine seconds remaining.

People scattered.

Luca ran through the club.

Down the hidden tunnel.

Nero guided him.

“Red pipe!”

Luca saw it.

Sienna shouted through comms.

“Put the ring inside!”

He did.

The pneumatic system activated.

The capsule shot upward.

00:00:31.

Elena heard machinery.

A metal tube opened.

The capsule dropped.

She grabbed it.

00:00:19.

Opened Dante’s ring.

Removed Isabella’s wedding band.

Placed it into the circular indentation.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

00:00:11.

Elena’s voice shook.

“When the lights go dark, what stays?”

00:00:07.

“Family stays.”

ISABELLA MORETTI AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

00:00:04.

Elena slammed her hand onto DISCONNECT.

00:00:02.

The relay went dark.

00:00:01.

The courthouse console froze.

Then:

ORPHEUS TRANSMISSION ABORTED.

Sienna stared.

Silence filled the courtroom.

Nero screamed through the radio.

“She did it!”

Dante closed his eyes.

A breath escaped him.

Not relief.

Something deeper.

“My sister.”

Sienna caught him as his knees finally gave way.

“Dante.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, now you’re definitely not.”

He looked at her.

“Did we win?”

Sienna looked at Kane lying wounded nearby.

At the dead Directorate operators.

At the destroyed courthouse.

At the timer frozen one second before disaster.

“For tonight.”

Dante smiled.

May you like

“Good enough.”

Then he lost consciousness in her arms.
