Chapter 2 - “You mean the man from that night?”

“Yes.”

“But I don’t know anything about him.”

“You know more than you realize.”

Marcus paused.

“His name is Adrien Blackwood.”

Claire frowned.

“Who is Adrien Blackwood?”

“He’s the billionaire behind Blackwood Holdings.”

Her expression changed.

“The billionaire?”

Marcus nodded.

“You’re telling me that man is a billionaire?”

“One of the richest men in the country.”

Claire struggled to reconcile the information with the embarrassed man who had stood in the restaurant without a wallet or phone.

“Then why would someone like that care about this place?”

“Because he cares about what happened here.”

“He wanted to repay me for $47?”

“No. It wasn’t the $47.”

“Then what was it?”

“He said you were kind to him when you had absolutely nothing to gain.”

Claire looked down.

“I would have done the same for anyone.”

Marcus knew that was precisely the point.

Claire looked back at the documents.

“Then what exactly did Adrien give me?”

“Everything.”

She looked at him.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Marcus, what does that mean?”

“It means the restaurant belongs to you.”

“You’re saying I own this place?”

“Every table. Every room. Every inch of it.”

He indicated the documents.

“These are the ownership papers.”

Claire shook her head.

“Why would he trick me into accepting it?”

“Because he knew you’d never take it if you knew the truth.”

“Then I can’t accept it.”

Marcus glanced toward the room behind her.

“You should tell him that yourself.”

Claire froze.

“Because he’s here.”

She turned.

Adrien stood nearby.

“Hello, Claire.”

Her eyes widened.

“You’re Adrien.”

“Yes.”

“You bought this restaurant.”

“Yes.”

“Why would you do something this big for me?”

“Because you did something small for me when everyone else refused.”

Claire shook her head.

“I can’t accept a restaurant worth millions.”

“You can.”

“I can’t.”

“You don’t owe me anything, Claire.”

“Then why give me this?”

Adrien looked around the restaurant.

“Because for once, I wanted my money to mean something.”

Claire remembered her father’s words.

“My father taught me kindness isn’t something you sell.”

Adrien nodded.

“He was right.”

Claire was overwhelmed.

“I need time to think about this.”

“Take all the time you need. I’ll respect whatever you decide.”

Later, Claire went back to her father.

“Dad, I can’t just take a restaurant from a billionaire.”

“Then don’t take it because he’s rich.”

She looked at him.

“Take it because he chose to honor your kindness.”

“What would you do?”

“I’d accept it.”

Her father smiled.

“Then I’d work hard enough to deserve it.”

Claire thought about the restaurant, about losing her job, and about how strangely everything had changed.

Finally, she made her decision.

“Okay. I’ll accept it.”

Her father nodded.

“Then make something beautiful out of it.”

When Adrien learned that she had accepted, he was pleased.

“She accepted.”

Marcus nodded.

“Good. Do you want me to handle everything?”

Adrien shook his head.

“No. I’ll go see her myself.”

When he returned to the restaurant, Claire looked up in surprise.

“You came back.”

“I wanted to see how my new owner was doing.”

Claire smiled.

“You already own half the city. You can at least let me choose your lunch.”

Adrien looked amused.

“I think I like being told what to do.”

Their contact did not end with the ownership transfer.

Adrien kept returning.

Soon, his presence began attracting attention.

“Adrien, who is she?”

“Is this your new girlfriend?”

Cameras appeared.

Claire looked around.

“Why are they taking pictures of us?”

Adrien immediately understood.

“They’re here because of me.”

He stepped forward.

“Step back. She’s not used to this.”

Claire did not retreat.

“I can handle myself.”

Later, when the crowd had thinned, she looked at him.

“Does that happen every time you leave the house?”

“Almost.”

Adrien’s tone became quieter.

“It’s 1 reason I stopped going out alone.”

Claire studied him.

“That sounds lonely.”

“Most people see the money first.”

“I didn’t know you had money.”

Adrien smiled.

The next time he returned, Claire noticed the pattern.

“Again?”

“The food is good.”

“You don’t come here for the food.”

Adrien hesitated.

“Maybe I don’t.”

Claire understood that something between them was changing.

“This is getting complicated.”

“I know.”

Then a headline appeared.

“Billionaire Adrien Blackwood Spotted With Mystery Woman.”

Claire stared at it.

“I am definitely not a mystery woman.”

Adrien saw the photographs too.

“You saw them.”

“How did you know?”

“I’m sorry. You never asked for that attention.”

“No, I didn’t.”

He looked at her carefully.

“You don’t have to stop coming to the restaurant,” Claire said.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Adrien smiled.

“Then you will be seeing more of me.”

As the days passed, he did exactly that.

One evening, he looked at Claire and noticed how tired she seemed.

“You look exhausted.”

“I own a restaurant now. Apparently that should happen.”

“You’ve been coming here a lot,” Claire said.

“I have.”

She studied him.

“Do you ever do anything just for yourself?”

Adrien considered the question.

“I thought I did.”

“What did you want that night when you came here?”

He answered honestly.

“I really wanted to feel like nobody knew who I was.”

Claire understood.

“So you weren’t running away from people.”

“No.”

He paused.

“I was simply running away from being seen.”

“And somehow your peaceful dinner ended with you becoming my biggest customer.”

Adrien laughed.

“That’s 1 way to look at it.”

Others began noticing the change in him too.

Marcus remarked that Adrien had been smiling a lot lately.

Adrien gave him a warning look.

“You don’t say.”

Marcus smiled.

“You like her.”

“Don’t start with me.”

But there was little point denying it.

One evening, Claire prepared to leave.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Good night, Adrien.”

He looked at her for a moment.

“Yeah. Good night, Claire.”

The media attention did not disappear.

Another story was published.

Claire saw it and felt the pressure immediately.

“No. They published it.”

She stared at the article.

“They don’t even know me.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this.”

Adrien moved closer.

“You don’t have to face it alone.”

Claire looked at him.

“Look at me,” he said. “You’re safe.”

Gradually, she began becoming more accustomed to the strange world surrounding him.

“I think I’m finally getting used to it.”

The relationship between them had begun with something neither could have predicted.

Claire looked back on it one day.

“I lost my job because I helped you.”

“And somehow that kindness brought you here.”

She looked around at the restaurant.

Adrien shook his head.

“The restaurant wasn’t the real gift.”

Claire looked at him.

“Meeting you was.”

She smiled faintly.

“I only paid a $47 bill.”

“You gave me something worth far more.”

Claire remembered her father again.

“My father always said kindness was the way to live.”

“He was right.”

“I just never imagined kindness would bring me this far.”

Adrien looked at her.

“Maybe that’s the point.”

The $47 bill had seemed insignificant when Claire paid it.

At the time, Adrien had been only a stranger without his wallet or phone, surrounded by people who assumed the worst.

Claire had no reason to help him.

She did not know his surname.

She did not know about Blackwood Holdings.

She did not know that he owned hotels, towers, restaurants, luxury developments, houses, cars, or private jets.

She did not know that he was one of the richest men in the country.

She only saw a man who said he had forgotten his wallet and phone.

Everyone else demanded proof.

Claire chose to believe him.

She paid $47 because, as her father had taught her, kindness cost nothing but could mean everything.

The decision cost her job.

When her manager fired her, Claire still refused to regret what she had done.

Her father had asked her directly whether she wished she had made another choice.

She had answered no.

Not even for a second.

To him, that meant she had not lost anything that truly mattered.

Adrien had returned home expecting to find his wallet and phone.

He found both.

The realization confirmed everything Claire had believed about him.

He had been telling the truth.

Yet what stayed with him was not simply relief.

It was the memory of 1 person standing beside him when everyone else treated him like a criminal.

He had spent years surrounded by people who knew his wealth before they knew him.

Claire had known nothing.

Her decision had therefore been impossible to buy.

That was why Adrien refused to treat the $47 as a debt that could simply be repaid.

When he learned she had been fired for helping him, he decided that kindness would be the last thing she was ever punished for.

He bought the restaurant.

Every table.

Every chair.

The entire property.

The purchase itself was easy for a man like Adrien.

What mattered was how to give it to Claire without making her feel indebted.

That was why he created the supposed employee raffle.

He wanted her to believe that the opportunity had found her.

He knew she would probably refuse if she understood immediately that a billionaire had deliberately bought a restaurant worth millions for her.

He was right.

When Claire discovered the truth, her first instinct was to reject it.

She told him she could not accept something so valuable.

Adrien told her she owed him nothing.

He had not bought it because of $47.

He had bought it because, for once, he wanted his money to mean something.

Claire’s father helped her understand the distinction.

She did not have to accept the restaurant because Adrien was rich.

She could accept it because he had chosen to honor her kindness.

Then she could work hard enough to deserve the opportunity.

Claire accepted.

Her father told her to make something beautiful out of it.

Adrien returned.

At first, he claimed he was checking on the new owner.

Soon, Claire recognized that excuse for what it was.

He came back because he wanted to see her.

The same man who had wanted 1 quiet night where nobody knew his name began willingly returning to the restaurant where 1 woman knew exactly who he was without caring about his wealth.

The attention surrounding him remained difficult.

Photographers appeared.

Questions followed.

Headlines turned Claire into a “mystery woman” even though no one writing about her knew anything about her.

Adrien understood that pressure because it had shaped his own life.

He had gone to the restaurant because he wanted to escape being watched.

Claire gradually understood that his wealth had given him almost everything except anonymity.

Most people saw the money first.

She had not.

That difference mattered more to Adrien than any restaurant he could purchase.

When the publicity became overwhelming, he did not tell Claire that she had to adapt to his world.

He told her that she did not have to face it alone.

When she felt unsafe, he asked her to look at him.

He reminded her that she was safe.

Slowly, the world around Adrien became less frightening to her.

At the same time, Claire’s world became something Adrien increasingly wanted to be part of.

He continued returning to the restaurant.

He smiled more.

Marcus noticed.

Claire noticed too.

What had started as an act of repayment had become something neither of them could reduce to money.

Claire had once said that she only paid a $47 bill.

Adrien knew that was not what she had really given him.

She had believed him when she had nothing to gain from doing so.

She had treated him like a person when no one around her knew his name.

She had reminded him what it felt like to be seen without being measured by wealth.

The restaurant had never been the real gift.

Meeting Claire was.

Her father had taught her that kindness was a way to live.

Claire had followed that lesson without knowing where it would lead.

She lost her job because of it.

Then the same decision brought her back to the restaurant as its owner.

It brought Adrien back into her life.

It transformed a humiliating $47 bill into something neither of them could have predicted.

Adrien had wanted 1 quiet meal.

Claire had wanted only to help a stranger.

Neither had acted with any idea of what would follow.

May you like

Yet everything changed because Claire chose kindness when she had every reason not to expect anything in return.

And in the end, the value of that decision could never be measured by the $47 she had paid.
