Chapter 6

The rehearsal dinner started at 7:00.
By 8:30, Mara had counted seventeen guests she didn’t recognize, three catering staff who didn’t know the layout of the kitchen, and two men near the bar who weren’t drinking.
She was working the room in tightening circuits, watching for the clean-handed man. She didn’t find him. But she found something else.
In the main salon, Sienna Vale stood near the fireplace with Petra, her assistant. They were not looking at a seating chart. They were looking at a phone. And on the phone was a photograph of a ledger page.
Mara kept moving. She didn’t slow. She didn’t stare. But she registered the angle of the photograph, the column structure, the position of the numbers.
The third column.
She was in the kitchen when the accusation came.
It was Petra who delivered it. She walked into the kitchen with the particular authority of someone who had been sent to do something unpleasant and was enjoying it more than she should.
“Mara Voss?”
Mara turned from the sink.
“Mr. Carver needs you in the main salon. Immediately.”
The walk from the kitchen to the main salon was forty-seven seconds. Mara counted every one. When she entered the room, the party had stopped. Every face turned toward her. The string quartet had stopped playing. The room was silent in the way rooms go silent when something has broken.
Sienna stood in the center of the room, one hand pressed to her chest, the other hand bare.
“The ring is gone,” she said. Her voice carried perfectly. “My engagement ring. It was on the vanity in the master suite. I took it off to wash my hands. When I came back, it was gone.”
Carver stood near the doorway, his pen frozen mid-click. “The master suite was cleaned this afternoon,” he said. “By Ms. Voss.”
Every eye in the room found Mara.
“I cleaned the master suite at 2:00,” Mara said. Her voice was steady. “I did not see a ring.”
Sienna’s lower lip trembled. It was a beautiful performance. “It was there. On the vanity. In plain sight.”
“Then it was taken after 2:00.”
“Or,” Petra said, stepping forward, “it was taken at 2:00. By the person who had access.”
The room murmured. Mara felt the weight of their attention like a physical thing. She stood in the center of the salon, in her uniform, with her practical shoes and her pulled-back hair and her face that nobody would remember, and she understood that she had been set up.
Not because the evidence was strong. But because she was the easiest story to believe.
A housekeeper. Poor. Invisible. Temptation placed in her path.
She was about to speak when the door to the salon opened.
Dante Marcel walked in.
He was not in party clothes. He was in a dark coat, and he was wet from the rain, and his expression was the kind of calm that precedes something catastrophic.
“Everyone stay exactly where you are,” he said.
The room went stiller.
Dante walked through the crowd. He did not look at Sienna. He did not look at the guests. He walked directly to Mara.
“The ring is not missing,” he said. “It was never on the vanity.”
Mara’s breath caught.
Dante held up his phone. On the screen was security footage from the master suite. “Sienna removed the ring from her own finger at 1:58. She placed it in her jewelry case. Not on the vanity. She then left the room.”
He turned to face the room.
“At 2:00, Ms. Voss entered the suite. She cleaned the bathroom. She did not touch the vanity. She did not touch the jewelry case. She left at 2:22.”
He paused.
“At 2:45, Sienna’s assistant Petra entered the master suite. She removed the ring from the jewelry case. She placed it in her pocket.”
The room erupted.
Sienna’s face went white. Petra took a step backward. The two men near the bar who hadn’t been drinking moved forward.
Dante didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.
“The engagement is over. The trust is frozen. The Valentini operation has been dismantled as of two hours ago.” He looked at Sienna. “You were the leak. You were always the leak.”
Sienna’s composure cracked. “You can’t prove—”
“I have the ledger. I have the recording. I have the footage of your assistant removing the ring.” He took a step closer. “I have everything.”
The room was chaos. Voices rose. People moved. Sienna’s face crumbled.
But Mara didn’t see any of it.

She was looking at Dante.
Because he was looking at her. And in his hand was a small velvet box.
