Chapter 6 - The Underboss Betrayed His Own Empire to Save the Woman Who Refused to Abandon HimBy midnight, Lorenzo had assembled the most trusted members of his security team.

There were only six.
A week earlier, he would have commanded more than a hundred men without questioning their loyalty.
Now he trusted six.
Madeline stood beside the conference table while surveillance photographs appeared on a large screen.
Rebecca Shaw had been seen entering her apartment building at 6:14 p.m.
At 6:27, a delivery van arrived.
At 6:39, the van departed.
Rebecca had not been seen again.
"Who owns the van?" Madeline asked.
Lorenzo's security specialist, Marcus Reed, shook his head.
"Stolen plates. The vehicle was abandoned near Chelsea."
"Any witnesses?"
"One neighbor heard an argument."
"What did she hear?"
Marcus glanced at Lorenzo.
"She heard a man say that the Romano family wanted its property back."
Madeline looked at Lorenzo.
"Vincent?"
"We don't know."
"Then ask him."
Lorenzo was silent.
Madeline stepped closer.
"You have access to him."
"Yes."
"Then ask."
Lorenzo looked at the men around the table.
"Leave us."
They obeyed immediately.
When the door closed, he turned toward her.
"Vincent is recovering from a near-fatal injury. His organization is fractured. The Morettis are trying to take control of the waterfront. If I accuse him without proof, half the men still loyal to him may turn against us."
Madeline stared at him.
"Rebecca could be dying."
"I know."
"Then why are you protecting him?"
Lorenzo's expression tightened.
"Because twenty-four years of loyalty doesn't disappear in a single afternoon."
Madeline stepped backward.
"And twenty years of lies don't become acceptable because you believed them."
The words struck him.
She saw it.
For a moment, she regretted how sharply she had spoken.
Then she remembered Rebecca.
A woman who had risked her life to uncover the truth.
A woman who had helped Madeline hear her father's voice again through the words he had left behind.
"I'm not asking you to become someone else overnight," she said more gently. "I'm asking you to choose what matters now."
Lorenzo looked at her.
"And if choosing you means destroying everything I've built?"
Madeline swallowed.
"Then I won't make that choice for you."
She walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
"To the police."
Lorenzo moved immediately.
"Madeline—"
She turned.
"Don't."
He stopped.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I care about you. More than I should. But I won't become another person who looks away because the Romano family frightens everyone."
Lorenzo stood motionless.
Madeline opened the door.
Then he spoke.
"Wait."
She stopped.
He took out his phone.
And called Vincent Romano.
Vincent answered on the third ring.
"Lorenzo."
"Did you order Rebecca Shaw taken?"
Silence.
Then Vincent said, "Where are you?"
"Answer the question."
"Come to the hospital."
"No."
Vincent's voice hardened.
"Boy, remember who you're speaking to."
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
For twenty-four years, that tone had been enough to make him obey.
Not tonight.
"I'm speaking to the man who raised me," Lorenzo replied. "And I'm asking whether he kidnapped a reporter."
Vincent said nothing.
Lorenzo felt something inside him break.
"Did you?"
Finally, Vincent answered.
"I ordered someone to find her."
"Who?"
"Frank DeSantis."
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
Frank DeSantis was one of Vincent's oldest lieutenants.
A man who had served the Romano organization for nearly thirty years.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"Vincent."
"I told Frank to recover the documents. I did not authorize anyone to hurt her."
Lorenzo stared at the phone.
"You knew about the vault."
"Yes."
"You knew about the Bellamy Trust."
Another silence.
"Lorenzo—"
"Did you kill my parents?"
The words seemed to empty the room.
Vincent's breathing became audible.
"No."
"Did you know they were going to die?"
Vincent did not answer.
Lorenzo's voice dropped.
"That silence is becoming familiar."
"Lorenzo, there are things you don't understand."
"Then explain them."
"Not over the phone."
Lorenzo looked at Madeline.
She stood near the door, listening.
He remembered the photograph of his parents.
The white house.
The dog.
The life he had forgotten.
"You have one hour to tell me where Frank is," Lorenzo said.
Vincent's voice became cold.
"And if I refuse?"
Lorenzo answered without hesitation.
"Then I'll find him myself. And when I do, I'll give everything Daniel Brooks collected to federal investigators."
He ended the call.
Madeline stared at him.
"What did you just do?"
Lorenzo looked at the dark screen.
"For the first time in my life," he said, "I told Vincent Romano no."
Frank DeSantis was hiding in a warehouse near the Mystic River.
Marcus discovered the location through a former Romano driver who had grown tired of being ordered to threaten innocent people.
The warehouse had been used for legitimate shipping years earlier.
Now it stood nearly empty.
Lorenzo insisted that Madeline remain at a secure location while law enforcement handled the rescue.
She resisted until he explained that her presence could endanger Rebecca.
"Then promise me something," she said.
"What?"
"No revenge."
Lorenzo looked at her.
"Madeline—"
"No. Listen to me."
She took his hand.
"I know what you're capable of. I've seen it. But if you go into that building and start killing people, you'll become exactly what Vincent trained you to be."
His expression darkened.
"Frank may have Rebecca."
"Then save her. Don't execute him."
Lorenzo looked at their joined hands.
Finally, he nodded.
"I promise."
The rescue began shortly after two in the morning.
Boston police officers, working with federal agents who had been quietly investigating the Romano organization, surrounded the warehouse.
Lorenzo supplied the location and information about the security arrangements.
He remained outside the perimeter.
For once, he was not the man giving orders.
He was the man waiting for professionals to do their jobs.
Madeline waited with him inside an unmarked vehicle.
Minutes stretched into an eternity.
Then a radio crackled.
"Female hostage located. Conscious. Requesting medical assistance."
Madeline closed her eyes.
Rebecca was alive.
A second transmission followed.
"Suspect in custody."
Lorenzo exhaled slowly.
Madeline reached for his hand.
He held it tightly.
When Rebecca emerged from the warehouse, wrapped in a blanket and escorted by two officers, Madeline hurried toward her.
Rebecca's face was bruised.
Her wrists were marked.
But she was walking.
"You're okay," Madeline whispered.
Rebecca managed a weak smile.
"Depends on your definition."
Madeline hugged her carefully.
"I'm so sorry."
"Don't be."
Rebecca looked toward Lorenzo.
"He didn't do what they expected."
Madeline frowned.
"What?"
Rebecca lowered her voice.
"Frank kept saying Lorenzo would come alone. He said Lorenzo would start a war to get me back."
She looked at him again.
"But he called the police."
Madeline felt something warm move through her chest.
Lorenzo approached.
Rebecca studied him.
"You're not what I expected."
He gave a faint smile.
"Neither am I."
The following morning, Frank DeSantis agreed to cooperate with federal investigators.
His first statement changed everything.
He admitted that Dante Romano had arranged the attack on the estate with the Moretti family.
But Dante had not acted alone.
Someone had provided him with access codes, security schedules, and financial support.
Someone powerful enough to move money through Romano accounts without attracting attention.
Madeline sat beside Lorenzo when the federal prosecutor explained the discovery.
"Who?" Lorenzo asked.
The prosecutor placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a woman in her early fifties, elegantly dressed, with dark hair and an expression of polished confidence.
Madeline frowned.
"Who is she?"
Lorenzo went completely still.
"That's Isabella Romano."
"Vincent's wife?" Madeline asked.
Lorenzo shook his head.
"His younger sister."
The prosecutor nodded.
"According to DeSantis, Isabella financed Dante's betrayal."
Madeline stared at the photograph.
"Why would she help him kill his father?"
Lorenzo's face hardened.
"Because Isabella has wanted Vincent's empire for twenty years."
The prosecutor leaned forward.
"And there's something else."
He placed a second document on the table.
It was an old adoption record.
Lorenzo looked at it.
His name appeared at the top.
Beneath it was the signature of the person who had arranged his placement in Vincent's household.
Isabella Romano.
Madeline looked from the document to Lorenzo.
The prosecutor continued.
"We believe Isabella knows what happened to your parents."
Lorenzo stared at the signature.
Then he whispered, "She was there."
Madeline touched his arm.
"What?"
"The night my parents died."
His voice became almost inaudible.
"I remember a woman standing in the doorway."
May you like
He looked at Isabella's photograph.
"She was wearing a red coat."
