Chapter 4 - She tore her left arm free.

A knife Carlo had carelessly left on a crate beside her was within reach.

He had believed she was completely restrained.

Clara grabbed it and slashed upward.

She could not reach Luca.

Instead, she cut the rope around her right wrist.

At exactly the same moment, Lorenzo threw the object in his hand.

It had never been a pen.

It was a miniature flash grenade.

The warehouse exploded in white light.

Lorenzo moved immediately.

He did not retreat.

He charged forward.

Before Luca could react, Lorenzo drove into him and took him to the floor.

Luca’s pistol skidded across the concrete.

“Kill him!” Carlo shouted.

Gunfire erupted from the elevated walkways.

Bullets struck concrete and metal.

Clara threw herself behind a shipping container.

She was not simply hiding.

She was searching for something she could use.

Then she saw it.

A forklift.

The keys remained in the ignition.

Lorenzo and Luca were fighting hand to hand.

It was a brutal exchange of fists driven by rage.

The snipers, however, kept Lorenzo trapped.

Carlo positioned his rifle for a clear shot.

Clara climbed onto the forklift.

She turned the key.

The engine roared.

“Hey! Up there!”

Carlo looked down.

Confusion crossed his face.

Clara accelerated.

The forklift slammed directly into the scaffolding tower beneath him.

Metal crumpled.

The entire structure rocked.

Then it collapsed.

Carlo screamed as he fell approximately 20 feet.

He struck a pile of wooden pallets.

He did not get back up.

The distraction gave Lorenzo the second he needed.

He drove a fist into Luca’s face.

Clara heard the crack of his nose breaking.

Lorenzo seized the fallen gun and rolled onto his back.

3 shots followed.

3 snipers fell from the rafters.

Then silence.

Lorenzo rose slowly.

Blood ran from his lip.

Luca lay on the ground holding his shattered face and groaning.

Lorenzo walked toward him.

He raised the pistol and aimed between Luca’s eyes.

“You threatened my family.”

“Enzo, wait.”

Luca’s confidence vanished.

“We can make a deal.”

“The deal was my life for hers.”

Lorenzo’s finger tightened on the trigger.

“You broke it.”

The gun fired.

It was over.

Lorenzo turned.

He dropped the weapon.

Clara remained seated on the forklift.

Her body was shaking.

Grease and dust covered her clothing and skin.

Lorenzo crossed the warehouse without speaking.

He reached up, lifted her from the machine, and crushed her against him.

His face buried itself against her neck.

The embrace hurt.

She did not care.

“You crazy woman.”

His voice broke.

“You attacked a sniper tower with a forklift.”

“I saw an opening.”

Clara finally started crying.

“I took it.”

Lorenzo pulled back.

“You are not a waitress.”

He looked at her with unmistakable adoration.

“You are a queen.”

6 months later, the Gilded Lily was under new management.

Marcus Henderson had been fired after an anonymous investor purchased the restaurant.

He was also quietly advised to leave the state.

Clara sat at table 7.

This time, she wore no black vest.

Instead, she wore a simple, elegant white dress.

Lorenzo sat across from her.

He looked different.

Lighter.

The shadows remained inside him, but they no longer seemed to consume everything else.

Isabella sat beside him.

She was healthy and vibrant.

A baby rested on her knee, Clara’s niece, who was visiting for the weekend.

“The risotto is excellent,” Clara told the new waiter.

The young man looked terrified.

“Relax, Thomas. You’re doing great.”

“Yes, Mrs. Moretti.”

He bowed quickly and retreated.

Mrs. Moretti.

Clara touched the diamond ring on her finger.

It still felt heavy.

But now the weight was welcome.

Lorenzo reached across the table and took her hand.

“Happy?”

“My mother is healthy. My debts are paid.”

Clara smiled.

“And I’m married to a man who finally learned to lose a chess game gracefully.”

“I let you win.”

Lorenzo was lying.

A small smirk appeared at the corner of his mouth.

“Keep telling yourself that.”

Clara looked through the window.

Rain was falling across Seattle.

She remembered the woman she had been 6 months earlier.

Poor.

Cold.

Invisible.

A former nursing student working as a waitress because her mother’s illness had destroyed every other option.

She had seen a dying woman and acted when everyone else remained still.

She had expected nothing in return.

That decision had cost her job.

It had also drawn her into a world of armed guards, betrayal, assassination attempts, kidnapping, and violence.

She had saved Isabella Moretti twice.

She had defeated Lorenzo across a chessboard.

She had discovered the traitor inside his own security organization.

And when Luca Rossi’s men tried to use her as leverage, she had refused to remain the helpless piece they believed they had captured.

Clara squeezed Lorenzo’s hand.

“Ready to go home?”

Lorenzo lifted her fingers and kissed them.

“My home is wherever you are.”

He signaled to the bodyguards.

They rose from the table.

Together, Clara and Lorenzo walked out of the Gilded Lily and into the Seattle rain.

They did not run from the storm.

They walked through it side by side.
