Chapter 3 - TWENTY-NINE MINUTES

At twenty-seven minutes after my phone call, Everett’s corporate credit card stopped working.
We learned because Diane tried ordering another bottle of vintage champagne.
The waiter returned quietly.
“Mrs. Hale?”
Diane smiled.
“Yes?”
“There seems to be an issue with the account.”
Everett looked over.
“What issue?”
“The corporate card was declined.”
The room near us became painfully still.
Diane laughed too loudly.
“Technical error.”
The waiter nodded politely.
“Certainly.”
“Try it again.”
“We did.”
Her smile disappeared.
Everett pulled out his phone.
