Chapter 2 - The Signature They Could Never ObtainFor several endless seconds...

Nobody moved.

The silence inside the underground chamber felt heavier than the stone ceiling above them.

Only Sophia's ragged coughing echoed across the room.

Daniel Rossi couldn't take his eyes off her.

She lay curled on the damp wooden floor beside the overturned iron chair, her wrists still bound with thick rope. Her white linen shirt was soaked with the bitter amber liquid, her face streaked with tears, and bruises darkened both sides of her neck where someone had held her down.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

"What..."

His voice cracked.

"...happened here?"

Victoria answered before anyone else could speak.

Her years of controlling boardrooms and manipulating investors had taught her one thing above all else—

Never allow silence to tell the story.

"Daniel."

She took one careful step toward him, keeping her voice calm.

"You came at the wrong moment."

Daniel didn't even look at her.

His attention remained fixed on Sophia.

She was shaking.

Not pretending.

Not acting

Terrified.

He hadn't seen that look on anyone since he was a child.

Slowly...

He walked past his mother.

Past the shattered crystal glass.

Past the scattered ledgers.

He knelt beside Sophia.

"Soph..."

She flinched.

Not because of him.

Because someone had reached toward her.

Her entire body recoiled instinctively.

Daniel froze.

His stomach twisted.

Victims reacted that way.

Not liars.

He carefully lowered his hand.

"It's me."

His voice softened.

"I'm not going to hurt you."

Sophia slowly opened her swollen eyes.

For a moment...

She didn't recognize him.

Then tears overflowed.

"Daniel..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"You came."

Emma immediately knelt beside them.

"We have to untie her."

Daniel reached for the ropes.

Victoria's voice cut through the room.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Not because he obeyed.

Because he couldn't believe what he'd heard.

"What?"

Victoria folded her arms.

"The restraints stay on."

Daniel slowly stood.

"What did you just say?"

"She isn't stable."

Emma stared in disbelief.

"She was tied to a chair!"

Victoria ignored her.

"She has been suffering from paranoid episodes."

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

Victoria sighed dramatically.

"I didn't want you to find out this way."

Emma almost laughed.

"Seriously?"

Victoria continued as if no one had interrupted.

"For months she's believed the family is trying to kill her."

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

Victoria pointed calmly toward the broken glass.

"She attacked me."

Emma's jaw dropped.

"You forced that drink into her mouth!"

Victoria looked directly at the young guard.

"Be careful with your accusations."

Daniel looked between them.

One terrified.

One furious.

One perfectly composed.

Years ago...

He would have believed his mother without hesitation.

Today...

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

His eyes drifted across the room.

That was when he noticed the surveillance monitors.

More than thirty screens.

Every hallway.

Every staircase.

Every entrance.

Every office.

Every bedroom.

Even private family rooms.

Daniel's heart skipped.

"Why..."

He walked toward the wall.

"...are there cameras inside the house?"

Victoria hesitated.

Only for half a second.

"They're for security."

"In bedrooms?"

She said nothing.

He stepped closer.

One monitor displayed Sophia's room.

Another showed his own office.

A third...

Displayed the family chapel.

His breathing slowed.

No.

Not slowed.

Hardened.

He turned toward the massive wooden desk.

Leather-bound ledgers covered every inch of it.

He picked one up.

Property Transfers.

Another.

Family Trust Amendments.

Another.

Medical Authorizations.

Each carried dozens of signatures.

His family's signatures.

His father's.

His grandfather's.

Sophia's.

Daniel stared.

Something wasn't right.

The signatures looked...

Too perfect.

Every stroke identical.

As though copied by the same careful hand.

Emma leaned closer.

"Those..."

She whispered.

"They look forged."

Victoria stepped forward immediately.

"Put those down."

Daniel didn't move.

His heartbeat grew louder.

Then he opened the oldest ledger.

Inside...

He found photographs.

Children.

Young women.

Employees.

Every face had notes written beside it.

Cooperative.

Uncooperative.

Transfer complete.

Observation continues.

His blood ran cold.

"What is this?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Instead...

She quietly reached into her pocket.

Emma noticed first.

"Daniel!"

He looked up.

Victoria held a small remote.

She pressed one button.

Click.

Every surveillance monitor instantly turned black.

Click.

Hidden steel shutters slammed down over the exits.

The entire chamber locked itself.

Emma spun toward the only staircase.

"It's sealed!"

Victoria smiled again.

That same emotionless smile.

"No one leaves."

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

"You planned this."

"I planned everything."

Sophia began crying again.

"You don't understand..."

Victoria looked directly at her.

"No."

She said softly.

"You've already said too much."

Then she looked back at Daniel.

"You've spent your entire life believing your father built this empire."

She paused.

"He didn't."

Daniel felt a chill crawl through his body.

"I did."

The room fell silent.

Victoria took another slow step.

"And if I have to sacrifice one daughter..."

Her cold eyes shifted toward Sophia.

"...to protect what I created..."

She smiled.

"I'll do it again."

Daniel's face turned white.

May you like

His voice barely escaped.

"...Again?"
