Chapter 2 - “My men control the floor.”

He continued.

“Every debt he had to the Morettis has been erased.”

Clara stared.

“They will never speak your name again.”

A sob escaped her.

She covered her mouth.

“Maximilian…”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“You are carrying my child.”

He interrupted her.

His hand moved gently over the curve of her stomach.

The contrast between the size and scars of his hand and the care in the gesture was startling.

“You saved my life in the dark.”

His voice softened.

“Now I pull you into the light.”

A pause.

“You are a Russo.”

“My family.”

“My blood.”

While Maximilian made those promises, betrayal continued below them.

Inside the estate’s communication center, Lorenzo Costa was finishing the plan he had built in secret.

For 20 years, he had served beneath the Russo family.

Resentment had grown with every year.

The Morettis had offered him half of Boston’s territory and the Don’s seat if he could deliver Maximilian’s head.

Now Maximilian possessed a weakness they could exploit.

A pregnant woman.

2 days later, another violent storm struck Boston.

Rain turned the streets into black rivers.

Maximilian was inside his private study with Clara.

He was feeding her strawberries from a silver platter when the oak doors opened violently.

Lorenzo entered.

His suit was wet.

He appeared breathless.

“Boss.”

Maximilian looked up.

“We have a major situation.”

Lorenzo stepped farther inside.

“The Morettis ambushed our weapons shipment at the Port of Boston.”

His voice carried urgency.

“They have our best crew pinned down.”

“If we lose that shipment, we lose the port.”

Whatever softness had been present in Maximilian disappeared instantly.

The crime lord replaced the man.

He stood.

Then retrieved a shoulder holster from the back of the chair.

“Lock the estate down.”

Maximilian checked the magazine inside his customized Glock.

Then he looked toward Clara.

His face softened only slightly.

“Do not leave this floor.”

A pause.

“I will be back before midnight.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then left.

Lorenzo remained in the doorway for a fraction of a second.

His eyes met Clara’s.

Something in them made her cold.

The emptiness of his expression triggered instincts she had learned long before entering the Russo estate.

The elevator chimed.

Maximilian was gone.

Lorenzo walked toward the security panel.

He entered 3 commands.

The biometric locks disengaged.

Security cameras went dark.

The magnetic seals protecting the penthouse released with a soft hiss.

Clara stood.

“What are you doing?”

Her pulse accelerated.

“Securing the perimeter, Miss Jenkins.”

Lorenzo removed a suppressed pistol from inside his jacket.

“We wouldn’t want unexpected visitors.”

Before Clara could scream, the private balcony doors shattered inward.

4 men in tactical black entered.

Each wore the Moretti crest.

Clara backed away.

She seized a heavy crystal vase and threw it toward the first attacker.

It made no difference.

They reached her almost immediately.

A gloved hand closed over her mouth.

A chemical smell burned into her nose.

Chloroform.

“Use the service elevator.”

Lorenzo stepped over the broken glass.

“The Don is chasing ghosts at the port.”

His expression remained calm.

“By the time he realizes what happened, his heir belongs to the Morettis.”

Darkness pulled Clara under.

At the Port of Boston, Maximilian’s convoy tore across the loading docks.

Black SUVs stopped hard beside the warehouses.

Armed men exited into the freezing rain.

Maximilian reached Warehouse 4.

He kicked open the door with his Glock raised.

Nothing.

No trapped Russo crew.

No shipment.

No Moretti attackers.

Only wind and the smell of ozone.

Maximilian stopped.

His mind recalculated.

He pulled out an encrypted phone.

Then opened the live security feed from the East Wing.

Connection lost.

The roar that came from him made even hardened enforcers move backward.

“It’s a decoy.”

He looked toward his men.

“Lorenzo.”

The name became a curse.

“That traitorous bastard gave them the codes.”

Maximilian turned toward the convoy.

“Everyone back in the vehicles.”

His voice carried through the storm.

“If 1 hair on her head has been harmed…”

His eyes went cold.

“…I will burn this entire city to the ground.”

Miles away, Clara woke inside an abandoned industrial building in Back of the Yards.

Her head throbbed.

Her vision blurred beneath a single swinging lightbulb.

The room smelled of damp concrete, rust, and old blood.

She was tied to a heavy wooden chair.

Plastic zip ties held her wrists behind her back.

“Sleeping beauty wakes.”

The voice came from the shadows.

Mateo Moretti stepped into the light.

He was heir to the Moretti Syndicate.

A hunting knife moved easily between his fingers.

His eyes went directly toward Clara’s pregnant stomach.

A smile appeared.

Lorenzo Costa stood behind him.

His face remained unreadable.

“Maximilian will kill you.”

Clara’s throat was dry.

She forced the fear out of her voice.

“Maximilian is busy destroying the port looking for ghosts.”

Mateo laughed.

He circled the chair.

“By the time he realizes you’re inside the old meatpacking plant…”

Mateo looked toward the ring around her neck.

“…we will have sent him a very interesting package.”

He stepped closer.

“The silver ring.”

“A ransom demand.”

His smile widened.

“The entire South Side territory.”

Mateo grabbed the chain and pulled it hard.

Metal cut against Clara’s neck.

The Russo signet ring came out from beneath her clothing.

“Such a heavy object for a little maid.”

Mateo turned away to examine the crest beneath the industrial light.

It was the mistake Clara needed.

Her hands began moving behind the chair.

The zip ties were brutally tight.

Then she felt something sharp in the damaged wood.

A rusty nail protruded from the chair back.

Clara pressed the plastic against it.

Back.

Forth.

Again.

Again.

The sharp edge cut into her wrists.

Blood made the plastic slick.

The tie slowly began fraying.

“Lorenzo.”

Mateo continued playing with the ring.

“Get the camera.”

He grinned.

“I want a recording of her begging.”

“It will destroy Maximilian before we take his territory.”

Lorenzo produced the camera.

He stepped forward.

“Smile, Miss Jenkins.”

The plastic restraint snapped.

Clara moved immediately.

She did not run.

She threw herself toward Mateo.

Her arms wrapped around him from behind.

The silver chain was still in his hands.

Clara twisted it violently.

The heavy Russo signet ring drove directly into Mateo’s eye.

He screamed.

The hunting knife fell from his hand.

Blood covered one side of his face.

Clara dropped to the concrete.

She grabbed the knife.

Then scrambled backward until she reached the corner.

Both hands held the blade in front of her pregnant stomach.

Her body shook.

Her eyes remained fixed on Mateo.

“You bitch.”

Mateo reached for his waistband.

A handgun appeared.

Blood streamed from his face.

“I’ll cut that bastard child out of you myself.”

He started raising the gun.

The front wall of the warehouse exploded inward.

A reinforced armored SUV crashed through the corrugated metal entrance.

Steel and debris flew across the floor.

The vehicle had barely stopped when its doors opened.

Maximilian Russo emerged through the dust.

His jacket was gone.

The sleeves of his white shirt had been rolled upward, exposing muscular forearms and ink.

An automatic rifle was in his hands.

His eyes found Clara immediately.

Pregnant.

Bleeding.

Holding a knife in the corner.

Alive.

Then he saw Mateo aiming a handgun at her.

There was no negotiation.

No sit-down.

No warning.

Maximilian raised the rifle.

3 controlled rounds struck Mateo directly in the chest.

The Moretti heir was dead before his body hit the floor.

His weapon slid across the concrete.

Lorenzo screamed.

He dropped the camera and ran for the rear exit.

A pistol appeared in his hand.

Maximilian was faster.

He dropped the rifle.

Then drew his customized Glock.

2 shots.

One into each of Lorenzo Costa’s knees.

The traitor collapsed.

His screams filled the warehouse.

The rest of Maximilian’s armed crew entered and secured the building.

Laser sights settled across Lorenzo.

Maximilian ignored him.

He dropped his weapon.

Then ran toward Clara.

He fell to his knees and slid the final distance across the concrete.

“Clara.”

His voice broke.

“Clara, look at me.”

He took the knife carefully from her frozen fingers.

Then pulled her against his chest.

“I’ve got you.”

His voice disappeared into her hair.

Clara finally released the weapon and buried her face against his neck.

Her sobs became uncontrolled.

“I’ve got you.”

Maximilian rocked her against him.

“Nobody will hurt you again.”

He held her tighter.

“I swear it on my life.”

“He tried to take the ring.”

Clara clutched Maximilian’s shirt.

Her breathing remained broken.

Maximilian looked at the blood covering her wrists.

He saw what she had done to escape.

What she had been prepared to do to protect their child.

He kissed her temple.

His expression held both devotion and something lethal.

“He took nothing.”

Maximilian’s voice hardened.

“You are a Russo, Clara.”

His eyes remained on hers.

“You are the queen of this city now.”

A pause.

“And anyone who looks at you wrong will meet the same end.”

Maximilian lifted Clara into his arms.

He carried her from the bloodstained warehouse toward the armored convoy waiting outside.

Behind them, Lorenzo Costa continued screaming.

The consequences of his betrayal had begun.

Months later, the Boston underworld understood a simple and frightening truth.

The Russo Syndicate was untouchable.

Not only because of money.

Not only because of weapons.

But because of the woman sitting beside its Don.

Clara Russo, once the invisible maid who had cried alone behind the dumpsters, gave birth to the heir of the empire.

May you like

The woman who had once wanted nothing more than safety now sat beside Maximilian Russo.

And anyone who threatened her, her child, or her family understood exactly what followed.
