Chapter 3 - A sound too raw to contain.

A bullet struck him in the back while he shielded her.

“No!”

Elena screamed.

Dominic did not collapse.

He remained over her while fresh blood spread through his shirt.

Then sirens cut through the gunfire.

More headlights appeared.

Additional vehicles rushed toward them.

James had arranged backup.

His people had arrived.

Roman looked around.

Marcus did the same.

The balance had changed.

They ran.

Both men climbed into a vehicle and disappeared into the night while the remaining gunmen were killed, disarmed, or forced to surrender.

James rushed toward Dominic.

“Boss. We have to move.”

Elena helped lift him.

Her hands became slick with blood.

Dominic was almost white.

His breathing shallow.

But he remained conscious.

“Stay with me.”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Don’t you dare die. Do you hear me?”

A faint smile moved across his bloody mouth.

“Not yet.”

He breathed carefully.

“I still haven’t taken you to dinner.”

James’s safe house was a wooden cabin deep in forest approximately 2 hours outside the city.

There were no nearby homes.

No lights other than their own.

No one close enough to hear anything.

Dominic lost consciousness during the drive.

By the time they carried him into the main bedroom, his skin was white and his lips nearly colorless.

His breathing was so faint Elena had to lean close to confirm it.

The organization’s private physician arrived within 20 minutes.

An older man.

Steady hands.

Unshaken eyes.

He pushed Elena out of the room, closed the door, and began operating directly on the oak bed.

Elena sat on the floor of the hallway.

Her back rested against the wall.

Dominic’s dried blood covered her hands.

She did not wash them.

James sat several steps away.

A bullet had grazed his shoulder.

It was already bandaged.

Neither spoke.

1 hour passed.

Then 2.

Elena called Mrs. Patterson.

Her neighbor answered sleepily.

“Noah is fine. Sleeping like a rock. Don’t worry, sweetheart. Finish your work.”

Elena thanked her.

Then she began crying without sound.

Tears ran onto the blood covering her hands.

She cried because Noah was safe.

Because she had almost died.

Because Dominic had taken a bullet while covering her body with his own.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., the bedroom door opened.

The doctor emerged.

Sweat covered his forehead.

“He’s out of danger.”

Elena’s body loosened.

“The bullet missed the major organs. He needs rest, but he’ll live.”

The doctor looked at her.

“He wants to see you.”

Dominic was awake.

White bandages covered his torso.

His face remained pale.

But his eyes were open.

They followed Elena as she entered.

She sat beside the bed.

“You almost died because of me.”

Dominic’s voice was rough.

“You almost died because of me.”

A pause.

“Twice.”

Wind moved faintly through a crack near the window.

Dominic looked toward the ceiling.

“I’ve never told anyone this.”

Elena waited.

“When my father died, I didn’t cry.”

He swallowed.

“I was relieved.”

His father had been cruel to Marcus’s mother.

To Marcus.

To almost everyone except Dominic and Dominic’s mother.

“I built the empire believing I was different from him.”

Dominic looked at Elena.

“Better than him.”

His expression tightened.

“But I’m not, am I?”

He had hurt people.

He had spent so much time being king that he had failed to be a brother.

Then he told her why he had originally resisted rescue.

“The truth is, I thought I deserved to die in that basement.”

Dominic’s eyes shone.

Not quite tears.

“Payment.”

Elena took his hand.

Her fingers looked small inside his.

“Then why did you fight?”

Dominic looked directly at her.

“Because you came back.”

His answer was immediate.

“And I thought if someone like you can see something worth saving in me, maybe it really exists.”

They did not kiss.

There were no promises.

Elena only held Dominic’s hand.

She remained there until he fell asleep.

For the 1st time in his life, Dominic Crane did not sleep alone.

James watched through the partly open door.

For the 1st time in 3 brutal weeks, he smiled.

Perhaps Dominic had finally found something more valuable than power.

2 days later, Dominic could walk without assistance.

The new gunshot wound still hurt, but endurance was something his life had trained into him.

His eyes had cleared.

Now they carried resolve and a quiet, contained rage.

Elena could not return safely to her apartment.

Marcus knew where she lived.

He knew Noah’s school.

With James’s help, Elena brought Noah to the cabin.

Mrs. Patterson was told they were visiting relatives outside the city for several days.

She asked no questions.

Noah entered the cabin with wide, curious eyes.

Then he saw Dominic.

Tall.

Bandaged.

Severe.

The boy stepped behind Elena.

Dominic saw the fear.

Instead of standing over him, Dominic lowered himself carefully onto 1 knee.

Elena doubted many people had ever seen him place himself physically beneath someone else.

“You must be Noah.”

Dominic’s voice became softer than Elena had ever heard it.

“Your mother talks about you constantly.”

Noah remained wary.

“Are you the man my mom saved?”

Dominic smiled.

A real smile.

“That’s right.”

Then he looked at the child seriously.

“And I’m going to make sure nobody ever hurts you or your mother. Ever.”

Noah studied him.

Then nodded.

He accepted the promise.

That afternoon, Dominic met with the remaining people loyal to him.

They sat around the cabin’s wooden table.

James stood beside Dominic.

The transfer meeting would take place the following night at the Crown Hotel in downtown Boston.

Marcus planned to declare Dominic dead officially and assume control of the entire Crane organization.

Roman Castellano would attend to claim his share.

Dominic intended to appear.

But not alone.

He had contacted the FBI through his personal attorney.

A deal had been made.

Dominic would give federal authorities Roman Castellano, a man tied to numerous federal crimes.

In exchange, the Crane organization would receive immunity on the related charges covered by the agreement.

The FBI would be present.

After the meeting, Elena took Dominic outside onto the porch.

“And Marcus?”

Dominic did not answer.

His jaw tightened.

That was enough.

“You’re going to kill him.”

Dominic looked at her.

“He tried to murder me.”

His voice was hard.

“He threatened Noah.”

“And if you kill him, you become exactly what he thinks you are.”

Elena stepped closer.

“A monster without a conscience.”

“There are monsters the world needs.”

Elena did not retreat.

“The man who told me he hid while his little brother was beaten is not a monster.”

She held his gaze.

“Don’t let Marcus make you into one.”

Dominic stood in silence.

Elena could see the conflict.

The mafia boss wanted revenge.

The boy who remembered Marcus screaming wanted something else.

Dominic turned toward the yard.

Noah was playing with James.

The boy’s laughter carried across the late-afternoon air.

“Tomorrow night, I take everything back.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“And I decide what kind of man I want to be.”

The Crown Hotel rose 30 stories over downtown Boston.

It was part of Dominic’s empire.

That night, the entire 30th floor had been closed for the transfer meeting.

The conference room overlooked the city through glass walls.

Marcus stood at the head of the table in an expensive gray suit.

His hair was immaculate.

His expression smug.

Business partners sat around him.

Attorneys.

Officials Dominic had once bribed.

And Roman Castellano.

“As you all know,” Marcus began with carefully performed grief, “my brother Dominic Crane died in a tragic accident 3 weeks ago.”

He paused.

“As his only remaining next of kin, I will assume full control of the Crane family assets and business operations.”

People nodded.

Nobody questioned it.

Dead men did not object while the living divided what remained.

Roman raised his glass.

“A new era.”

The conference-room doors opened violently.

Every head turned.

Dominic Crane walked inside.

Black suit.

No tie.

Gray eyes cold.

His steps were measured.

Behind him came James and 10 loyal men.

Marcus’s glass slipped from his hand.

It shattered.

His face became almost colorless.

“Hello, little brother.”

Dominic’s voice cut across the room.

“Miss me?”

Marcus stepped backward.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“That’s right.”

A cold smile appeared.

“But someone reminded me that even monsters deserve a second chance.”

Roman reacted faster than anyone else.

He reached inside his jacket for a gun.

At the same moment, another door burst open.

Federal agents entered.

Weapons raised.

“FBI. Nobody move.”

The room disintegrated into shouting.

Chairs moved.

Men were forced down.

Handcuffs snapped closed.

3 agents took Roman to the floor.

He fought.

Cursed.

Spat.

As they dragged him past Dominic, he bared his teeth.

“This isn’t over, Crane.”

Dominic looked at him.

“It is.”

His expression did not change.

“You should have done it yourself, Roman. Never trust a coward to do a killer’s work.”

Roman disappeared into the corridor.

Business associates were removed for questioning.

Attorneys looked physically ill.

Officials who had accepted Dominic’s money turned gray.

Eventually, Dominic ordered everyone out.

Even the FBI.

Even James.

“5 minutes.”

He looked at Marcus.

“With my brother.”

The doors closed.

Only they remained.

Marcus was on his knees.

Shaking.

“We’re blood.”

He began crying.

“You can’t do this to me.”

Dominic approached.

“You stabbed me.”

His voice remained low.

“You left me in a basement to die.”

Another step.

“You threatened a 6-year-old child.”

He stopped.

“And now you want to talk about blood.”

“I did it for us.”

Marcus sobbed.

“Father never loved me. You had everything.”

His voice broke into anger.

“Everything. I had nothing.”

Dominic’s voice trembled almost imperceptibly.

“I could have given you everything. The company. The money. All of it.”

He looked down at his brother.

“You only had to ask. You only had to be loyal.”

“I didn’t want your charity.”

Marcus shouted through his tears.

“I wanted to be equal.”

Dominic removed a gun.

Marcus saw it and collapsed completely.

“Please.”

He sounded like a frightened child.

“Please. I’m your brother.”

Dominic raised the weapon.

His hand shook.

Not from fear.

From the battle inside him.

He remembered Marcus at 8.

The belt.

The screams.

His own hands pressed over his ears while he did nothing.

Then Dominic lowered the gun.

“I’m not killing you.”

His voice became hollow.

“Because that would be mercy.”

He turned toward the door.

“And I’m not generous enough for that anymore.”

James waited outside.

“Bring the FBI back.”

Dominic looked toward the room.

“I have 1 more gift for them.”

Marcus was handcuffed.

He screamed his brother’s name.

Fought.

Begged.

Dominic did not look back.

He walked through the corridor with his spine straight.

Then he saw Elena at the far end.

She had come anyway.

He had told her to remain at the cabin with Noah.

She did not.

When Dominic reached her, Elena saw 1 tear move down his cheek.

Only 1.

Dominic wiped it away.

As though it had never existed.

As though Dominic Crane never cried.

1 month later, the Crane-Castellano case dominated national news.

Headlines repeated the story everywhere.

A mafia boss survived an assassination arranged by his brother.

Roman Castellano had been arrested.

Marcus Crane had been exposed.

Photographs of Dominic, Marcus in handcuffs, and Roman being placed in a police vehicle filled television broadcasts and social media.

Another story spread nearly as quickly.

May you like

The cleaning woman who saved the boss.

Reporters followed Elena relentlessly.
