Chapter 7 - The Price of Blood

The safe-deposit box contained a wedding photograph.

Nothing else.

Chloe stared at it.

For three seconds she genuinely believed the universe was mocking her.

Gabriel stood beside her inside the private vault of First Manhattan Trust.

Mateo guarded the door.

Luca remained at the hospital coordinating with federal investigators while simultaneously trying to keep them from discovering why armed men had invaded a Rossi-owned medical center.

Box 214 sat open on the steel table.

Empty except for the photograph.

Elena Rossi on her wedding day.

Beautiful.

Dark hair.

White dress.

Antonio beside her.

Young.

Serious.

Gabriel looked almost exactly like him.

Chloe turned the photograph over.

Nothing.

"No documents," Mateo said.

"No drive," Gabriel added.

"No ledger."

Chloe examined the box.

"Sarah was kidnapped for this?"

"Vale may believe the evidence is here."

"Then why leave the photograph?"

Gabriel picked it up.

"Sentimental."

"Your mother hid evidence capable of destroying a political network. Does sentimental sound like her?"

He looked at Chloe.

Fair point.

She held the photograph beneath the vault light.

The paper was old.

Thick.

One corner had been damaged.

She ran her thumb across the surface.

Something felt wrong.

"Mateo."

"Yeah?"

"Knife."

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

Mateo handed her a folding blade.

Chloe carefully separated the cardboard backing.

A thin sheet of paper was hidden inside.

Coordinates.

And one sentence.

FOR MY SONS, WHEN THEY ARE READY TO KNOW WHAT THEIR FATHER BECAME.

Gabriel read it.

His face emptied.

Chloe wished she could erase the sentence.

She could not.

"Coordinates?" Mateo asked.

Chloe entered them into her phone.

A location appeared.

Upstate New York.

A small town near the Canadian border.

Gabriel stared at the map.

"I know that place."

"What is it?"

"My father had a hunting cabin."

Chloe looked at him.

"Had?"

"Burned down fifteen years ago."

"Apparently your mother didn't think so."

The burner phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Not Gabriel's.

Chloe's.

A phone she had never seen before lay inside the safe-deposit box.

Beneath the photograph.

It was ringing.

Gabriel drew his weapon as though he could shoot the sound.

Chloe picked it up.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice.

Calm.

Older.

"Chloe Bennett."

Her stomach tightened.

"Who is this?"

"Put Gabriel on speaker."

She looked at him.

Gabriel nodded.

Chloe activated speaker.

"You're speaking to both of us."

A soft laugh.

"Good. I've heard extraordinary things about you."

"Where is my sister?"

"Alive."

Chloe closed her eyes for half a second.

Alive.

Gabriel placed a hand against her back.

"Let me speak to her."

"Eventually."

"Now."

The man's voice remained pleasant.

"You're not in a position to issue instructions."

Chloe looked at the photograph.

"Sebastian Vale."

Silence.

Then:

"Very good."

Gabriel's expression became lethal.

"You should have stayed dead."

Vale laughed.

"I could say the same about you."

Gabriel stepped closer to the phone.

"If Sarah is hurt—"

"You'll kill me? Yes. I'm familiar with your vocabulary."

Vale sounded bored.

"Your mother was considerably more creative."

Gabriel's face changed.

"Don't speak about her."

"Elena was remarkable. Smarter than Antonio. Smarter than me, perhaps."

"Where is Sarah?"

Chloe forced the conversation back.

Vale sighed.

"She is comfortable."

"I want proof."

A pause.

Then Sarah's voice.

"Chloe?"

Chloe gripped the table.

"Sarah."

"I'm okay."

Her voice trembled.

"I'm okay. Don't give them anything."

Someone took the phone away.

Vale returned.

"Satisfied?"

"No."

"Good."

"What do you want?"

"The archive."

"We don't have it."

"You have the key."

"The box was empty."

Vale became quiet.

Chloe realized he had not known.

Interesting.

"Then Elena moved it."

"Looks that way."

Vale recovered quickly.

"You will find it."

"And if we do?"

"Trade."

"My sister for the archive."

"Precisely."

Gabriel shook his head.

No.

Chloe ignored him.

"When?"

"Forty-eight hours."

"Not enough."

"You have thirty-six now."

The call ended.

Chloe stared at the phone.

Gabriel took it from her.

"You are not trading anything."

"Yes, I am."

"No."

"My sister."

"And if that archive contains what Bellini claims, it controls judges, police departments, elected officials—"

"I don't care."

"I know."

Chloe looked at him.

"That's why this decision isn't yours."

Something dangerous entered Gabriel's expression.

"Everything involving Sebastian Vale is my decision."

"Not Sarah."

"Vale wants you emotional."

"I am emotional."

"Exactly."

Chloe stepped toward him.

"Do you remember the alley?"

He stopped.

"You were bleeding in the street. You told me to run."

"Chloe."

"I ran to you."

His jaw tightened.

"Sarah would do the same for me."

"This isn't the same."

"It is exactly the same."

Gabriel looked away.

She caught his face.

Forced him back toward her.

"You don't get to love me only when it's convenient."

His eyes darkened.

"I love you enough to keep you from destroying yourself."

The words landed between them.

Love.

Neither had said it before.

Not like that.

Chloe forgot the vault.

Vale.

The photograph.

For one impossible second there was only Gabriel.

He seemed to realize what he had said.

He did not take it back.

"Say it again," Chloe whispered.

His expression softened.

Barely.

"I love you."

Her chest hurt.

Gabriel touched his forehead to hers.

"And that's why I won't let him use your sister to put a knife in your hand and point it at your own throat."

Chloe closed her eyes.

"I love you too."

His breath stopped.

She continued before the moment could consume them.

"But I'm still getting Sarah back."

Gabriel laughed once.

A broken sound.

"Of course you are."

They drove north that afternoon.

The hunting property stood six hours from Manhattan.

Snow began falling after sunset.

By the time they reached the access road, the forest had become white and silent.

Gabriel brought only Mateo and two guards.

No army.

Vale would be watching roads.

Chloe knew it.

The cabin appeared destroyed.

Charred foundation.

Collapsed roof.

Trees growing through what had once been the living room.

Gabriel stood among the ruins.

"I came here as a kid."

"With your mother?"

"Sometimes."

He looked toward the tree line.

"She hated it."

"Why?"

"Too quiet."

Chloe smiled faintly.

"I think I would have liked her."

"She would have terrified you."

"Then definitely."

They searched for three hours.

Nothing.

At midnight, Mateo found a steel hatch beneath the remains of an old woodshed.

A bunker.

The lock had rusted.

Gabriel forced it open.

Cold stale air rose.

They descended.

Concrete stairs.

A narrow corridor.

One room.

Shelves lined the walls.

Hundreds of files.

Gabriel stopped.

"My God."

Elena Rossi had built an archive.

Not copies.

A weapon.

Chloe opened the nearest box.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Recorded conversations.

Judicial bribes.

Police corruption.

Political donations.

Twenty-five years of secrets.

Mateo whistled softly.

"This could burn the city down."

"No," Chloe said.

She looked around.

"It could burn the country down."

Gabriel found a tape recorder.

A cassette already inside.

Label:

GABRIEL AND LUCA.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

Elena.

"If you're hearing this, then I failed to keep you away from our world."

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Chloe took his hand.

The recording continued.

"Your father loves you. Remember that before you hear what comes next."

Gabriel's fingers tightened around hers.

"Antonio did not build the Rossi organization to fight Sebastian Vale."

A pause.

"He built it with him."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Elena explained.

Antonio and Vale had been partners.

Vale created financial systems.

Antonio provided enforcement.

Together they infiltrated unions, ports, courts.

Then Vale wanted expansion.

Politics.

Hospitals.

Police.

Antonio refused.

Not because he was moral.

Because he understood uncontrolled power eventually consumed everyone near it.

Elena discovered Vale had begun arranging murders disguised as accidents.

Journalists.

Auditors.

A prosecutor.

She copied the records.

Antonio helped her hide them.

Vale retaliated.

The car bomb.

Years of quiet war.

Then Elena said something that changed everything.

"Sebastian cannot operate alone. Someone inside our family kept him informed."

Gabriel opened his eyes.

Chloe looked at him.

"Who?"

The tape continued.

"I never proved who."

A sound in the recording.

Elena crying.

"But I know the leak survived."

Gabriel switched off the tape.

"No."

Chloe understood.

Miller.

Jensen.

The cameras.

The hospital.

Someone inside.

Still.

Mateo's radio crackled.

He touched his earpiece.

Then froze.

"Movement outside."

Gabriel drew his gun.

"How many?"

"Multiple."

Lights appeared through the bunker entrance.

They had been followed.

Gunfire struck the hatch.

Mateo returned fire.

"Back exit?"

Chloe searched the room.

Gabriel pointed.

"There."

A narrow tunnel.

They moved.

The two guards held the entrance.

Shots thundered underground.

Chloe ran behind Gabriel through darkness.

Then Mateo shouted.

"Gabriel!"

They turned.

A figure appeared behind him.

Gun raised.

Mateo fired first.

The attacker fell.

Another shot.

Mateo jerked backward.

Blood spread across his abdomen.

"No!"

Chloe caught him.

He collapsed.

Gabriel fired down the corridor.

"Move!"

Mateo pushed Chloe away.

"Go."

"We're not leaving you."

"Chloe."

Blood filled his mouth.

"Watch the hands."

Her eyes burned.

Gabriel grabbed her.

Mateo fired again.

Holding the corridor.

Buying seconds.

"GO!"

Gabriel dragged Chloe into the tunnel.

The last thing she heard was Mateo's pistol firing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then silence.

They emerged half a mile away beside a frozen creek.

Chloe fell into the snow.

Gabriel pulled out his phone.

No signal.

The archive.

Mateo.

Sarah.

Everything collapsing.

Then Chloe saw headlights through the trees.

A vehicle approaching.

Gabriel raised his weapon.

The SUV stopped.

The driver's door opened.

Vincent Bellini stepped out.

Hands raised.

"Don't shoot."

Gabriel aimed directly at him.

"You followed us."

Bellini shook his head.

"I followed them."

"Who?"

Bellini looked toward the burning glow beginning to rise above the trees.

"The man inside your family."

Chloe stood.

"Who is it?"

Bellini looked at Gabriel.

His face carried something close to pity.

"I told you the Consortium survived."

"Who?"

Bellini swallowed.

"Russo."

Gabriel's weapon lowered slightly.

Chloe felt the answer hit her like cold water.

Russo.

The frightened lieutenant.

The man who sweated.

The man whose fear had always looked genuine.

Because it was.

He had not been afraid of Gabriel.

He had been afraid of being discovered.

Bellini opened the SUV door.

"If you want Chloe's sister alive, get in."

Gabriel stared at him.

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

May you like

Bellini looked toward the burning cabin.

"But right now I'm the only traitor who happens to be on your side."
