Chapter 9 - The Night Dom Vasquez Lost EverythingThe news broke at 8:04 Monday morning.

VASQUEZ HOLDINGS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

By noon, three banks froze accounts.

By two, two development partners canceled contracts.

At four, reporters surrounded Dom’s office.

By sunset, everyone in Chicago believed Dominic Vasquez’s empire was collapsing.

Exactly as planned.

Mercer moved quickly.

He contacted an intermediary.

He offered Dom a deal.

Walk away from three waterfront properties and the investigations would disappear.

Dom agreed to meet.

The location was a private club overlooking Lake Michigan.

Nema was not invited.

She came anyway.

Mercer looked exactly like politicians were supposed to look.

Silver hair.

Expensive smile.

Perfect suit.

He shook Dom’s hand.

Then noticed Nema.

“Ms. Reyes.”

“You know me.”

“Everyone knows you now.”

Nema sat.

Mercer smiled.

“I understand you inherited your mother’s talent for involving yourself in complicated affairs.”

“She taught me to read numbers.”

“A useful skill.”

“Especially when politicians steal.”

Mercer’s smile remained.

His eyes did not.

Dinner arrived.

Nobody ate.

Mercer slid documents across the table.

“Sign these.”

Dom looked through them.

Three properties.

Two companies.

Control of redevelopment rights worth hundreds of millions.

“You built quite an empire,” Mercer said.

Dom remained silent.

“Your father would be proud.”

Dom looked up.

“My father knew you?”

“No.”

“Interesting.”

Mercer paused.

Nema watched him.

There.

Tiny hesitation.

“Arthur says otherwise,” she said.

Mercer’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Arthur Bianke is a murderer and fugitive.”

“Still alive, though.”

Mercer looked at her.

Nema smiled.

“He told us everything.”

That was a lie.

Bianke had told them enough.

Mercer leaned back.

“You’re bluffing.”

Nema removed her phone.

She played a recording.

Bianke’s voice filled the room.

Mercer arranged Rafael’s death.

Mercer froze.

The recording was fabricated from a controlled interview.

Not false.

But edited.

Enough to frighten him.

“That proves nothing.”

“No,” Nema said.

“But it makes you nervous.”

Dom watched Mercer.

The politician stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Nema remained seated.

“Your car is wired.”

Mercer stopped.

“Your office too.”

Another lie.

Probably.

Nema had learned from Dom.

Confidence mattered.

“You think you’re untouchable,” she continued.

“You’re not.”

Mercer looked at Dom.

“You let her speak for you?”

Dom’s expression softened slightly.

“No.”

He looked at Nema.

“She speaks for herself.”

Something changed in Nema’s chest.

Mercer left.

They waited.

One hour.

Two.

Then Leo called.

Mercer had panicked.

He contacted three people.

A police commander.

A developer.

And a federal investigator.

All three calls were intercepted under a federal warrant obtained from evidence Nema had already provided.

By sunrise, Daniel Mercer was arrested.

The investigation against Dom disappeared.

The frozen accounts reopened.

The newspapers changed their headlines.

But Dom did not celebrate.

He stood on the roof of his building watching the city wake.

Nema joined him.

“It’s over,” she said.

“For Mercer.”

“And Bianke.”

Dom looked at her.

“Bianke made a deal with federal prosecutors.”

“Testimony?”

“Yes.”

“Prison?”

“Probably the rest of his life.”

Nema nodded.

That felt appropriate.

Not a bullet.

Not revenge.

Consequences.

Dom looked toward the lake.

“I’m done.”

Nema studied him.

“With what?”

“This.”

He gestured toward the city.

“The organization.”

She waited.

“I spent my entire adult life maintaining something my father built.”

His voice was quiet.

“I told myself it was loyalty.”

He looked at her.

“Maybe it was fear.”

“Of what?”

“Becoming nobody.”

Nema smiled faintly.

“I have experience with being nobody.”

“How was it?”

“Underrated.”

Dom laughed.

A real laugh.

Rare.

Beautiful.

Nema took his hand.

“You don’t have to become someone else overnight.”

“I know.”

“But?”

“I want to find out who I am when nobody is afraid of me.”

Nema looked at him.

“That might take a while.”

“Will you stay?”

There was no command.

No ownership.

No blood debt.

Just a question.

May you like

Nema squeezed his hand.

“Yes.”
