Chapter 4 - “I brought the doctor to the safe house. Leo put a gun against the doctor’s head and told him to leave.”

Frank shook his head.

“He refuses pain medication. Won’t let anyone touch him.”

His voice dropped.

“He’s sitting in the dark, bleeding, waiting for the rest of Carmine’s people to come finish it.”

Ara looked at him.

“Leo sent you.”

“No.”

Frank shook his head immediately.

“He specifically ordered me to stay away from you.”

Ara’s expression did not change.

“He said if I brought you back into this, he would kill me himself.”

Frank leaned forward.

“But I don’t know what else to do.”

He sounded desperate.

“If Leo dies, everything goes. The Russians move. The families panic. The city turns into a bloodbath.”

He met her eyes.

“You’re the only person he listens to.”

Ara stood inside the apartment she had chosen because it was safe.

In her head, she heard the HR director again.

Proactive synergy.

Her navy blazer hung over the sofa.

Ara left it there.

She went into the bedroom and removed a heavy black wool coat from the closet.

Then she picked up her keys and a leather tote.

When she returned, Frank was watching her.

“Can you drive?”

“I can.”

He struggled to his feet.

“Then take me to the Bronx.”

The basement beneath the old bakery smelled of damp concrete, gunpowder, and blood.

Ara descended the stairs.

Her heels made soft clicking sounds against the dirty steps.

A heavy steel door at the bottom stood partly open.

Inside, a single bare bulb swung from a cord.

Shadows moved across peeling walls.

Ara entered.

Leo sat on a damaged leather sofa in the center of the room.

His undershirt was soaked dark red along the left side.

His head rested against the back cushion.

His eyes were closed.

A SIG Sauer 9 mm pistol lay across his thigh.

One finger rested loosely near the trigger guard.

His skin looked gray.

Pain had hollowed out his face.

The king was gone.

He looked like a man who had finally discovered a war he could not win.

Ara stepped fully inside.

The door closed behind her.

Leo’s eyes opened.

The pistol came up instantly.

The barrel pointed directly at her chest.

His pupils were wide.

His expression wild.

For approximately 2 seconds, he did not recognize her.

Then recognition came.

The gun dropped from his hand.

It struck the concrete floor.

Leo stared.

His chest moved irregularly.

“You aren’t here.”

His voice was barely functional.

“I’m hallucinating.”

Ara crossed the room without answering.

She placed her tote on a wooden crate.

Then she removed a heavy first-aid kit she had forced Frank to retrieve from the SUV.

Ara stopped in front of Leo.

“I told Frank to stay away from you.”

“Frank works for you.”

She lowered herself to her knees between Leo’s legs.

“I don’t.”

Ara reached for the blood-soaked undershirt.

“Lift your arms.”

Leo only stared at her.

“Why are you here?”

“Lift your arms.”

He obeyed.

Slowly.

Ara pulled the ruined shirt over his head and threw it aside.

The bullet had passed through the flesh just above his hipbone.

It appeared to have missed vital organs but had carved a deep, ragged channel.

Blood still seeped from it.

Ara pulled black latex gloves over her hands.

Then she opened antiseptic and soaked a thick piece of gauze.

“This is going to burn.”

There was no sympathy in her voice.

She pressed the gauze into the wound.

Leo’s body locked.

Muscles tightened across his neck.

His teeth clenched.

A low sound escaped him.

Both hands shot toward Ara.

His fingers closed around her hips with enough force to bruise.

He did not push her away.

He held on.

Ara kept pressure on the wound.

“You’re sloppy.”

Her face was close to his chest.

“Carmine should never have gotten within 10 miles of you.”

Blood soaked into the gauze.

“You stopped paying attention.”

“I was distracted.”

Leo’s forehead fell against her shoulder.

His breath was hot against her neck.

“By what?”

Leo lifted his head.

He looked into her eyes.

Pain was still there, but something stronger had replaced it.

“The quiet.”

His voice was broken.

“The office was too quiet.”

He swallowed.

“The city was too quiet.”

His hands loosened at her waist.

“I could not think. I could not breathe.”

Leo looked almost ashamed.

“I tried to burn the whole world down to keep you.”

He exhaled.

“And instead, I burned myself out.”

His bloodstained hands moved upward.

Along her ribs.

Her sides.

Then to her face.

His thumbs rested against her cheekbones.

“I surrender.”

The words were almost impossible to reconcile with Leo Rossi.

“I can’t do this anymore.”

His hands shook.

“If you want to leave, I won’t stop you.”

Ara remained still.

“I won’t follow you. I won’t track you. I won’t hurt anyone who looks at you.”

His voice dropped.

“You win.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Just fix this.”

He meant the wound.

Perhaps more.

“Then you can go.”

Ara looked at him.

A mafia boss bleeding on a ruined sofa, stripped of every layer of control.

She had wanted freedom from him.

She had wanted to prove she was not another piece on Leo’s board.

Now he was giving her exactly what she had demanded.

No surveillance.

No interference.

No ownership.

And the truth became impossible to ignore.

Ara did not want the quiet life she had fought for.

She did not want the sterile corporate office.

The predictable salary.

The safe men in sensible sweaters.

She wanted the storm.

She wanted the danger.

She wanted Leo.

Not because he controlled her.

Because she understood him.

Because she was the only person who knew how to restrain the violence inside him.

Leo had not built the cage alone.

In their own ways, they had built it around each other.

Ara secured a pressure bandage over his side.

Then she removed the gloves and dropped them.

She stayed on her knees.

She reached for Leo’s suit jacket hanging over the sofa and closed her fist around its collar.

Then she pulled him toward her.

Leo allowed it.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

His eyes widened.

Hope appeared almost violently across his face.

“Ara—”

“You do not own me.”

Her grip tightened.

She pulled him closer until only inches remained between them.

“I own you.”

Leo released a shaking breath.

“Yes.”

Ara kissed him.

There was nothing soft about it.

It tasted of blood, salt, and complete ruin.

Leo’s arms went around her.

He lifted her from the floor and pulled her against his uninjured side.

He kissed her with the desperation of a drowning man.

For once, Ara met his violence with her own.

Her hands moved into his hair.

The professional boundary they had preserved for 5 years disappeared completely.

When they finally separated, both were breathing hard.

Leo rested his forehead against hers.

His hands trembled against her back.

“You’re mine.”

His voice was fierce but unsteady.

“I am.”

Ara touched his jaw.

“But tomorrow morning, you are going to finish the rest of Carmine’s crew.”

Leo opened his eyes.

“And then you are giving me a 20% raise.”

A rough laugh escaped him.

It immediately turned into a wince from the wound.

He looked at her.

At the woman who had left his empire and returned by choice.

“Whatever you want.”

His voice was quiet now.
