Chapter 6 - The TrapThe announcement went public forty-eight hours later.

Not through newspapers.
Not through police.
Through the shadow network connecting men like Antonio Russo.
A message.
Antonio possessed historical records documenting an international weapons operation involving multiple criminal organizations.
He intended to negotiate.
Interested parties had seventy-two hours to make contact.
The response was immediate.
Threats.
Offers.
Bribes.
Three assassination attempts against locations Antonio had deliberately leaked.
All empty.
Sophia watched everything from the command center.
“You enjoy this,” she said.
Antonio looked offended.
“I enjoy efficiency.”
“You enjoy watching your enemies panic.”
“That too.”
The plan depended on identifying whoever had been coordinating the attacks.
Antonio believed Volkov was only one participant.
Sophia believed the true enemy was someone closer.
Daniel’s phone provided the clue.
Several messages originated from an encrypted relay used by Russo Holdings.
Internal infrastructure.
The traitor had access to Antonio’s corporate network.
Marco narrowed the possibilities to seven executives.
Antonio wanted to interrogate all seven.
Sophia disagreed.
“If the real traitor knows we suspect them, they disappear.”
“So?”
“So we give each person different information.”
Antonio looked interested.
Sophia explained.
Seven executives.
Seven different meeting locations.
Whoever attacked the fake meeting would reveal which executive leaked it.
Marco smiled.
“The canary trap.”
Sophia nodded.
Antonio looked between them.
“I know what a canary trap is.”
“Then why do you look surprised?”
“Because my physical therapist wife is designing counterintelligence operations.”
Sophia leaned back.
“I contain multitudes.”
Antonio stared at her for a second.
Then laughed.
It was rare enough that everyone in the room looked up.
The seven locations were distributed.
They waited.
Six remained quiet.
At 2:13 the following morning, armed men entered an abandoned warehouse in Baltimore.
Only one executive had been given that location.
Victor Hale.
Antonio’s chief financial officer.
A man who had worked beside him for eleven years.
Antonio stared at the surveillance footage.
“No.”
Marco looked equally stunned.
Victor had attended Antonio’s wedding.
He had arranged Sophia’s family trust.
He had managed billions of dollars.
More importantly, Antonio trusted him.
Sophia touched Antonio’s arm.
He pulled away.
Not from her.
From everyone.
“I want him alive.”
Marco nodded.
Victor was arrested before dawn.
He did not resist.
That worried Sophia.
They brought him to the estate.
Victor entered the interrogation room wearing an expensive suit and handcuffs.
He looked almost bored.
Antonio stood opposite him.
“Why?”
Victor smiled.
“You really want to ask that in front of her?”
Antonio’s face became stone.
“Sophia stays.”
Victor looked at her.
“So the rumors are true.”
“What rumors?”
“That the great Antonio Russo has become domesticated.”
Antonio moved forward.
Sophia touched his arm.
“Don’t.”
Victor laughed.
“There. Exactly.”
Sophia sat opposite him.
“You arranged the attack on my father.”
Victor’s amusement disappeared.
“I arranged nothing.”
“You leaked information.”
“Sometimes information is more valuable than action.”
“To whom?”
Victor remained silent.
Sophia studied him.
He was too calm.
Not the calm of innocence.
The calm of someone who believed he still possessed leverage.
“You’re protecting someone.”
Victor smiled again.
“Smart girl.”
Antonio’s voice dropped.
“Answer her.”
Victor looked directly at Sophia.
“You want the truth? Your husband’s empire is dying.”
Antonio did not react.
Victor continued.
“The world changed. Governments changed. Financial systems changed. Men like Antonio still think fear is enough.”
He leaned forward.
“It isn’t.”
Sophia understood.
“This isn’t revenge.”
“No.”
“It’s a takeover.”
Victor’s smile widened.
“Now you’re learning.”
Volkov had been useful because he hated Antonio.
Daniel had been useful because he needed money.
But Victor was building something larger.
A coalition.
He intended to fracture Antonio’s organization and absorb what remained.
“Why involve my father?”
“Because the records created leverage.”
“Why kidnap me?”
Victor glanced at Antonio.
“To prove he could be controlled.”
Antonio’s hands curled.
Victor enjoyed it.
Sophia suddenly realized something.
“You expected Antonio to kill Volkov.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Sophia continued.
“You wanted Volkov dead so he couldn’t expose you.”
Silence.
Antonio looked at her.
Sophia leaned forward.
“And you expect Antonio to kill you too.”
Victor said nothing.
“Because dead men don’t testify.”
Antonio understood.
Victor wanted violence.
He wanted Antonio to behave exactly as everyone expected.
Sophia stood.
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
“You’re going to live.”
His confidence finally cracked.
Sophia turned to Antonio.
“Give him to federal authorities.”
Antonio stared at her as if she suggested handing over his entire empire.
Victor laughed.
“He’ll never do that.”
Sophia kept her eyes on Antonio.
“Will you?”
A long silence followed.
This was larger than Victor.
Larger than revenge.
Antonio had spent his life solving betrayal with blood.
Sophia was asking him to choose something else.
Finally Antonio looked at Marco.
“Call our attorney.”
Victor stopped laughing.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Antonio looked at him.
“No.”
Then at Sophia.
“I’m making a change.”
Victor was transferred that evening.
His information opened investigations across several countries.
Accounts were frozen.
Associates disappeared.
Politicians denied knowing anyone involved.
The criminal world shifted.
But Victor had one final surprise.
Before leaving, he asked Sophia to come closer.
Antonio refused.
Sophia went anyway.
Victor whispered:
“Ask your husband what happened to your mother.”
Sophia froze.
Antonio saw her face.
“What did he say?”
Sophia looked at him.
“What happened to my mother?”
Antonio became still.
Too still.
Her heart dropped.
“You know.”
“Sophia.”
“You know something.”
Antonio closed his eyes.
May you like
And Sophia understood that the next betrayal might not come from an enemy.
It might come from the man she loved.
