Chapter 7 - The Night Adrian Kane Lost EverythingAdrian Kane had always believed there were three things a man could lose only once.

His reputation.

His family.

His life.

By midnight, he had lost the first two.

The third was waiting.

The news broke shortly after ten.

Federal authorities had frozen accounts associated with several Kane-controlled companies while investigators examined suspected money laundering, illegal security operations, and financial links to the Ashworth conspiracy.

Business partners began distancing themselves immediately.

Executives resigned.

Banks suspended transactions.

And the men who had once crowded Adrian's private dining room suddenly became impossible to reach.

Marco entered the penthouse carrying two phones and a folder.

"It's worse than we expected."

Adrian stood beside the window.

"How much?"

"Most of the liquid assets are frozen. The legitimate companies can continue operating under court-approved restrictions, but we're going to have trouble meeting payroll."

"Then use the funds the lawyers say are available."

"That won't cover everything."

"Sell the cars."

Marco blinked.

"What?"

"The cars. The watches. The artwork. Anything legally available to sell."

"Boss, some of those pieces are worth millions."

"Then they should cover payroll."

Marco stared at him.

"You really mean to dismantle everything."

Adrian turned.

"People who work for us have families. They shouldn't suffer because I finally decided to stop lying about how the business was built."

Marco lowered his eyes.

"Understood."

Adrian looked toward the city.

Somewhere out there, Vivienne was rebuilding a foundation that had been stolen from her.

He had once believed he could give her the world.

Now he understood that the world had never been his to give.

He could only decide what kind of man he would be while standing beside her.

His phone rang.

Caroline Price.

"Mr. Kane, we need you at the federal building."

"Why?"

"Victor and Edward escaped the airfield before agents arrived."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"How?"

"We're investigating."

"Where are they now?"

"We believe they're still in the Northeast."

A pause.

"There's something else."

Adrian waited.

"Someone inside your organization has been providing them information."

The room went cold.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

Adrian looked toward Marco.

His lieutenant was reviewing financial documents at the dining table.

For fifteen years, Marco had been the closest thing Adrian had to a brother.

He had stood beside him through ambushes, betrayals, and wars that never reached the newspapers.

Adrian trusted him with his life.

But he had once trusted Victor.

He had trusted Julian Voss.

He had trusted men who smiled while destroying families.

"Send me the evidence," Adrian said.

Price hesitated.

"We need you to come in."

"I'll be there."

He ended the call.

Marco looked up.

"Problem?"

Adrian studied him.

"How many people knew we were going to the Ashworth estate?"

Marco frowned.

"You. Me. Vivienne's attorney. Mercer. The federal team."

"Anyone else?"

"Not that I know of."

Adrian walked closer.

"Did you tell anyone?"

Marco's expression changed.

"Boss."

"Answer."

"No."

Adrian watched him.

Then nodded.

"All right."

Marco stood.

"You think I betrayed you?"

"I think someone did."

"And after everything, you think it might be me?"

Adrian said nothing.

The silence was enough.

Marco's face hardened.

"I buried my brother because of this organization. I spent fifteen years cleaning up other men's mistakes. I stayed when everyone else ran."

"I know."

"Then maybe you should remember that before you start looking at me like I'm another Julian Voss."

He walked out.

Adrian did not stop him.

By morning, Vivienne had received the news.

She found Adrian at a small office in Midtown, where he had temporarily moved his remaining legitimate operations.

The expensive furniture was gone.

The walls were bare.

Only a desk, two chairs, and a coffee machine remained.

Adrian looked exhausted.

He stood when she entered.

"Vivienne."

She studied the room.

"You're selling everything."

"Most of it."

"Why?"

"Because some of it was never honestly mine."

She looked at him for a long moment.

"That's not something I expected to hear from Adrian Kane."

"Neither did I."

She sat.

He remained standing until she gestured toward the other chair.

"Rebecca told me about the frozen accounts."

Adrian nodded.

"And the investigation."

"Yes."

"And Marco."

His expression tightened.

"What about Marco?"

"He's missing."

Adrian went still.

"Since when?"

"Last night. His phone is off. His apartment is empty."

Adrian stood so quickly his chair scraped backward.

"That's impossible."

Vivienne watched him.

"You thought he betrayed you."

"I questioned him."

"And now he's gone."

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time, Vivienne saw something more painful than guilt.

Regret.

"He was angry," Adrian said quietly. "I let him walk out."

Vivienne stood.

"Then we find him."

Adrian looked at her.

"We?"

"Yes."

"You don't have to involve yourself."

She crossed her arms.

"Adrian, I am already involved. My family was murdered. My uncle is alive. Your uncle is running from the government. Someone tried to burn down the place where my parents hid evidence."

She stepped closer.

"I'm not going to sit in a townhouse waiting for men to decide when I'm allowed to know what's happening."

Adrian almost smiled.

"I wouldn't dare suggest it."

"Good."

They contacted Mercer.

Within two hours, investigators had traced Marco's last known movements to an abandoned warehouse near the Brooklyn waterfront.

The property belonged to a holding company once controlled by Julian Voss.

Vivienne felt a familiar chill.

"Of course it does."

Mercer studied the location.

"We'll send a team."

Adrian shook his head.

"Marco knows that building. If he's there, he may be able to tell us something."

"Then let the authorities handle it."

Adrian looked at Vivienne.

She nodded.

"He's right."

Adrian sighed.

"You're both becoming very difficult."

Vivienne raised an eyebrow.

"You're just getting used to people telling you no."

For the first time that day, Adrian laughed.

It was brief.

But it was real.

The investigators entered the warehouse shortly after sunset.

Vivienne and Adrian waited in a nearby command vehicle.

Minutes passed.

Then twenty.

Then forty.

Finally, Mercer's radio crackled.

"We found Reyes."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Is he alive?"

A pause.

"Yes. But he's injured."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Relief moved through him so sharply it almost hurt.

Then the radio sounded again.

"There's something else."

Mercer's voice had changed.

"We found documents linking Victor Kane to a private security operation called Black Harbor."

Adrian frowned.

He knew the name.

Black Harbor had been an internal project developed years earlier under Victor's supervision.

Officially, it had provided protective services to wealthy clients.

Unofficially, Adrian had suspected it operated outside normal legal boundaries.

"What kind of documents?" he asked.

Mercer answered.

"Surveillance reports. Financial records. Personnel files."

A pause.

"And a file on Vivienne Ashworth."

Vivienne went still.

"What?"

Mercer continued.

"The surveillance began nine years ago."

Silence filled the vehicle.

Adrian turned toward her.

Vivienne stared straight ahead.

Nine years.

For nine years, someone had known she was alive.

Someone had watched her sleeping on sidewalks.

Watched her searching through garbage.

Watched her disappear beneath the weight of her own hair.

And done nothing.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

"They knew."

Adrian reached toward her, then stopped.

Vivienne looked at him.

"They knew where I was."

He nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"Then why didn't they kill me?"

Adrian had no answer.

May you like

But the truth was waiting inside the warehouse.

And when Mercer finally brought out the file, Vivienne discovered that the reason she had survived was far more disturbing than anything she had imagined.
